T he Show season is over, and the Summer season is just coming into view. Despite the ups-and-downs of the thermometer, Spring is imminent, more or less.

T ake a break from your gardening work and join us in May as Gary Meyer of Hawkhill Orchids in Pacifica, California presents “Dracuphilia: A Gothic Romance.” Dr. Meyer’s interest in orchids began when he was a freshman in high school in Michigan. He started growing Draculas in his parents’ basement in 1990, with some degree of suc-cess. However, college, then medi-

cal school, and finally graduate school became unavoidable “distractions” for him. He now has two over-crowded greenhouses in his San Francisco backyard, populated by several hundred Dracula plants (along with a reasonable dose of Masdevallias, Lepanthes, Cyrtochilums, and Anguloas.)

G ary has been travelling to Colombia and Ecuador once or twice a year since 2005 to observe Draculas in the wild and to visit collections of South American Dracula growers. By day, he is a Research Manager at IntrinsiQ, LLC, where he tracks the oncology pharmaceutical industry. He is the owner of Colombian Orchid Imports, which imports orchid species from Colombia for sale in the United States, and also runs marketing and sales for Hawk Hill Orchids of Pacifica, California.

Meeting Minutes D2GROS Picnic! D2Show Award List D3-9Show Table D9

  • 32 Meeting Minutes for April 2, 2012The meeting opened with Bill’s Monologue. He thanked Tony Gerardi, and Sue Gar-row for bringing tonight’s refreshments. The GROS picnic will be June 24, 2012 at the Pond View Shelter in Mendon Ponds. We need someone to step up and be the chair for this event. The date and location are set, so … How about a volunteer? Gardenscape was a success. Besides the ex-posure it gave us, 58 coupons from the show were used at the door for show entry. That more than covered the expense of the volun-teer’s tickets.

Treasurer’s report: Money came in, money went out! The numbers from the show have not been totaled yet. We’re sorry to announce that Josh Vince (and Thomas!) are moving back to Ohio! Tony Gerardi has agreed to step in as Treasurer. May’s meeting will have some open positions to fill. We still need a new Program Chair, and the Member at Large will be nominated.

Bill also talked about local community educa-tion. All of the local school districts offer con-tinuing education classes. These classes can be 1 session, or more. Why can’t we become involved, and perhaps have a member teach a repotting class, or a beginner’s orchid class, or a series of classes? Senior centers like Oser, or Oasis might be another option for offering classes. Anyone interested? Maybe a group of volunteers working together would make it an easier job. Any takers?

Dave Weiss was contacted by someone who would like to buy orchids from someone who is downsizing their orchid collection. If you are interested, contact Dave Weiss.

Bill discussed the Spring Show. This year’s attendance was down. We did not pay for a D&C ad, but instead utilized their free adver-tising. It was mentioned in Thurs., Fri., Sat., and Sunday’s paper. We also had an ad in the Rochester Business Journal. Kelly’s Korner had a flier on their Face book page. Next year maybe if we also advertise at some local senior centers they will send bus groups. Len Bayer discussed the numbers, and pointed out sev-eral big problems with the show. The two

biggest are the lack of parking, and handicap access. Access to the elevator is a real prob-lem, Maybe we need to address relocation of the show. Four plants received AOS awards. Sandy Uhlig, Alan Salzman, Glen Decker, and Edgar from Wind Swept In Time all had plants awarded. Bill awarded Mike DeVito the Show MVP award. We appreciate all the hard work everyone put in to making the show a big success!

Carol Butcher introduced tonight’s speaker, Krum Sotirov. He spoke about Orchid’s at Kew Gardens. The show table disappeared before it was presented! But thank you to ev-eryone who brought in plants.
