We have a real treat in store for the February meet-
ing. Tony Basile and Roman will be demonstrating the ex-
plosives and weapons detection skills of a fine trained K-
9. Tony is a Marine who has spent considerable time and
effort in K-9 training. He has assisted his daughter in
training a drug detecting K-9. Tony is also an equine den-
tist but we have yet to figure a way to demonstrate that
part of his repertoire. Should be fun, informative, and
entertaining.
See you there. Little Sir- Joe Artim

We kicked off the new year with a great
January meeting. We had great attendance,
great participation, great speaker and great
food. It was my privilege to present Jack DuBe with
Honorary Life Time Membership to SIRS. Thanks Jack
for all your hard work in making Branch 49 as successful
as it is.
Baseball season is rapidly approaching and SIRS is
organizing a trip to watch the Giants play the A’s on
June 7, 2020. We will start a signup sheet for those who
are interested in attending.
As a reminder the cost for lunches is likely to go up
sometime in the near future. As we all know labor and food
costs are increasing therefore our fees will also increase.
Looking forward to seeing you all again for the
February 27th meeting.

Dick Merz, PBS, who was our longest-term member
of the branch, died on December 15th. Dick joined
Br 49 in 1986, and was 89 at the time of his death.
Bud Powers and his wife are both suffering from
serious illnesses. They were both hospitalized sev-
eral weeks ago. Bud and his wife Bernie, have moved
into the Stock Ranch Retirement Community on
Stock Ranch Rd in Citrus Heights. If you want to call
him, his new phone # is 916-560-9447. I spoke with
Bud on Saturday, and he sounds good, says he is
weak and suffering the pain of Spinal Stenosis. Coin-
cidentally, Bud, who is 95, now is the longest-term
member of our branch.
As previously reported, Jay Stirling has died. Jay
had been a member of the branch since 2014, and
died on January 9th. He was 76 at the time of his
passing.
Phil Moeszsinger has been diagnosed with stage 4
bladder cancer. Phil was in attendance at January’s
lunch, and we offer our prayers and best wishes for
his recovery.

Ray Trice was hospitalized recently, suffering from
pneumonia. He is back home and recovering.
Paul Kuzmich continues to improve, tumors either
shrinking or not growing. He is still on Chemo treat-
ment, and doing well.
Charlie Novello had spinal surgery a few weeks ago,
and is recuperating at home. He will have about six
weeks of very low activity left before he can resume
his normal life, but he did tell me he plans to win the
golf club player of the year award this year, which
confirms that the surgery did nothing to hurt his opti-
mism.
Dan Belsito remains sidelined. He suffered a back in-
jury several months ago, and then found out he also
has a heart problem. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Gerry Jenkins is was hospitalized last month, but is
home now and feeling much better. Gerry suffers
from Cardiomyopathy and COPD.
Bob Haines had bypass surgery on a leg artery. He will
be away from golf for an uncertain amount of time,
but was able to attend the January luncheon and is
walking well. We hope for a speedy recovery for him.
Roger Thomas is recovering from surgery on a blocked
carotid artery. He is home.
Ray Jerd had knee replacement surgery this week, is
home and “in no pain”, (according to John McKim)
Charles Lyons is still on temporary leave, caring for his
wife, Diane, who is unable to be left alone.
John Irwin is ill with a persistent Cough (bronchitis,
maybe) and has been unable to play golf recently. He is
home.

The winter season is finally coming to an end. It was
one of the most challenging seasons that we have had. We
battled rain, mud, fog, and wind.
In addition to the elements, the Board has been trying
to understand all of the changes to the USGA handicap
program. NCGA is still working on how to re-evaluate all of
the courses and all of the tees in relation to par.
Don Pressley has returned from ankle surgery to play
some excellent golf. He shot a gross 83 at Lincoln Hills on
a very windy day. Just wait until we get some good
weather.
I think that we are all ready for some good weather.

BOWLING REPORT
The SIRS 49ers bowling league
starts at noon on Wednesdays at
Fireside Lanes in Citrus Heights.
We are now into our second half.
The league has two vacancies. If
you would like to bowl in our league, please let me know.
There will be no summer league this year. In my monthly
newsletter reports, I list the stats for all known bowlers
in SIRS Branch 49. The weekly bowling standing sheets
do not include bowler’s branch information. I compared
the Branch 49 Membership Roster dated January 2020
with the most recent bowling standing sheet and came up
with two recent bowling members from Branch 49: Bob
Collins and Bill Bertsch. Allen Wong is also a fairly recent
addition. That brings us to 11 members. If I have failed
to include, or included someone in error, please let me
know.
The current scratch averages, high games, and high se-
ries for each of our 11 bowlers is as follows:
Franklin Call 109 - 153/400
Don Yarwood 176 – 225/618
Dick Martegni 178 – 245/611
Bob Collins 142 –188/473
Ray Jerd 167 – 248/622
Bill Bertsch 112 – 128/352
Carl Foulk 87 – 131/321
Allen Wong 138 – 189/469
John McKim 154 – 224/529
Gerald Law 176 – 234/642
Wayne Philpot 170 – 221/606

Hi, Hope all have a wonderful new decade.
Problem: SIRS Book Exchange. As many of you know,
after a book sits in the exchange with no action after 3
luncheons, we donate the book{s} to the Folsom Library.
Thus we have a PROBLEM: our available books for the ex-
change has now reached a very low inventory.
WHAT TO DO?
The exchange needs donations. Thus please check your
closets, under the bed, your family, friends, etc. and bring
what you uncover to our next SIRS luncheon. Specifically
we prefer recently published (past decade) fiction
(prominent authors preferred) books but will also welcome
non-fiction books.
Your donations will be appreciated by
our SIRS many readers.
REMEMBER THAT READING HELPS KEEP THE BRAIN
CELLS ALIVE AND WELL AS WE ENTER OUR
TWILIGHT YEARS!
Best regards, Marshall
Leap days are needed to keep our calendar in alignment
with the Earth's revolutions around the Sun.
It takes the Earth approximately 365.242189 days – or
365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds – to circle
once around the Sun. This is called a tropical year.
Without an extra, or intercalary, day on February 29
nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours
every year. After only 100 years, a calendar without leap
years would be off by approximately 24 days in relation to
fixed seasonal days such as the vernal equinox or
the winter solstice.
