October is one of my favorite months of the year. The outdoor chores are all done, the greenhouse is cleaned up, the leaves have turned and the air is crisp in the morning when I walk the dog. It makes me want to curl up in my rocking chair with a cup of cocoa and a lapful of fiber to spin. Since October is National Spinning and Weaving month, it’s an ideal time to indulge my fiber craving. Our meeting this month will be meeting October 12th at 10am the Anchorage Museum. Since many of our mem- bers were not able to make last month’s meeting, the program will be Summer Show and Tell again. Bring what you have finished and help us celebrate National Spinning and Weaving Month. Please also don’t forget to pay your annual dues. Dues are $25 a year and support the Guild activities and news- letter. Clydene, standing in for Super Treasurer Sharon, will be collecting payments at the meeting or if you can’t attend the meeting payment could be sent to the Guild PO Box. You will want to make sure you update your contact information too because we’ll be creating a special guild directory to hand out to attendees at No- vember meeting and changing the website password. a lot of visitors. Last year was the first time we accepted credit cards and we saw a good sized jump in our sales as a result.

Inventorying and Tagging your Items for Sale: Please fill out an inventory sheet for all items that you want to of-fer for sale at the booth. Members should price their own items (please price in whole dollars). The Guild will de-duct a commission of 15% of the price of the item when it sells. You will notice that the inventory sheet asks you to assign a “tag number” as well as a description of the item and a price. The “tag number” should be your initials and a number, for example, “NEP-1, NEP-2” etc. Please re-member to keep a copy of the inventory sheet for yourself.

You will need to attach two tags to each item for sale:A small “sales” tag showing the “tag number” and the price (from your inventory sheet) as well as a very brief description of the item, such as “scarf” or “tea towel.”A larger or custom tag or label for the customer, describ-ing the item in detail, including the fiber content, for ex-ample, “scarf woven from hand spun alpaca wool,” and giving the name of the artist, the tag number and price, and general care/cleaning instructions.

CONFERENCE REPORT

ANWG 2013 CROSSING BORDERS CROSS-ING THREADS CONFERENCE, Bellingham, WashingtonCongratulations, Sherry Rogers! Winner of Three First Place Fashion show Awards! Our very own illustrious, weaver-extraordinaire, Sherry Rogers, came home from ANWG 2013 with not simply one 1st. Place award tucked neatly in her carry on. Nor, did she tidily pack away a mere second 1st. Place award in her baggage. But the weaver in Eagle River cleaned-up the proverbial Fashion Show house with 3 (three) brilliant-ly earned 1st. Place awards for her Fish Print Rag Woven Jacket. Given here are the awards that Sherry’s garment received:

1. Best Use of Color and Design 2. Most Surprising3. Best Overall Construction

My, oh my! Of course, this doesn’t come as a great sur-prise to many of us. We have known for quite some time that Sherry’s garments were breathtakingly beautiful in their color and design. She has often surprised us with her witty use of design elements in her pieces. And finally, whom do we think of when it comes time to constructing and sewing our own handwoven garments? Well, Sherry, of course. So fellow AWSG members, the time has come to share our beloved Sherry with the greater Northwest weaving com-munity. I am certain that they, as well as we, look forward with anticipation to what comes off her loom next!

Third Wednesday Chemo Cap KnittingWe plan to honor deceased member Dolores Roguszka by continuing the once a month chemo cap knitting ses-sions. Note that instead of Third Thursday knitting, we’ll be knitting chemo caps on the Third Wednesday of each month at my house. I have inherited the five chemo cap pattern notebooks as well as the three large containers of donated yarns. We feel the Library (which is currently lo-cated at my house) is as good a place as any to store these items. So, we’ll knit chemo caps at my house in Stuck-again Heights, 9501 Chenega Drive, 1 - 4 pm the Third Wednesday of each month. Phone for instructions on how to get here: 337-9689.

Our weekly Stuckagain group will still meet every Wednesday of the month as usual, rotating locations de-pending on who can accommodate the group. All knitters are welcome any Wednesday, but In order to learn where we’ll be knitting each week other than the Third Wednes-day, you’ll have to supply me with an email address to get on the list. Dolores RoguszkaReprint of Anchorage Daily News Obituary

Longtime Alaska Resident Dolores Roguszka passed away peacefully in her home on August 23rd, 2013 with her loving family by her side. She was 83 years old.Dolores Dobroski was born July 31st, 1930 in West Frank-fort, Illinois. Her father and mother were Walter Dobroski and Hazel (Sharp) Dobroski. She graduated from high school at the age of 16, and later left for Alaska in 1953. Dolores was an active supporter of Alaskan Statehood and participated in organizations that pursued statehood for Alaska. She was a legislative aide for the House of Representative of the Alaska Territorial Legislature in 1955 and then Clerk of the House during the 1957 legisla-tive session. She also serves as the Assistant Clerk of the Alaska Constitutional Convention during their meeting in Fairbanks in late 1955 and early 1956. Dolores was a professional freelance photographer with a career that spanned forty years and photo credits in many publications including the National Geographic, Audubon, New York Times and Alaskan Sportsman. While teaching photography Dolores authored the book, “Amphoto Guild to SLR Photography.” Dolores’ photographs also appear in the book “The Day Trees Bent to the Ground.” A col-lection of personal essays by Alaskans who experienced the 1964 earthquake, complied by Janet Boylan and edited by Dolores.

Dolores was passionate about fiber arts; she loved spin-ning, weaving, and knitting. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge with others, frequently demonstration how to spin wool and teaching various weaving classes. During the period of time when she lived in Southern California her love of fibers also encompassed raising and exhibit-ing sheet. One of her cherished memories of that time is when she and her granddaughter Niki took a baby lamb from Dolores’ ranch to Niki’s kindergarten class for show and tell. In addition to her many projects Dolores enjoyed participating in various fiber demonstrations at the Alaska State Fair. As an active member of the Anchorage Spinners and Weavers Guild, Dolores served on the board of directors,

a term as President and most recently on the Scholarship committee. Dolores was a driving force behind the Che-mo Cap project which delivered over 5400 hand-knitted chemo camps to local hospitals and clinics. Her family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to her many friends for their kindness, support and generosity.

Looking for things to do with your handspun yarn?Far North Yarn Co. is interested in purchasing yarn from Alaska spinners. This locally-made yarn sells well to locals and tourists alike.

If you are interested in selling your handspun, take it to Far North Yarn Company (2636 Spenard Road, Suite 6 -- Across 27th from Bear Tooth Theaterpub). They will look it over and purchase it to add to their inventory. To make it fully marketable, Far North asks that it be labeled nicely with all the pertinent data such as: fiber content, yardage, weight, suggested gauge and needle size. If you have ques-tions before stopping by, call or email Annie Smith at 907-258-5648, [email protected]
