New Year’s Eve 31 December
Welcome to our second newsle er for 2016. The year is flying by and we are in the final prepara ons for the famous Best of Bri sh concerts. We have two shows at QPAC on 7 May and one performance at 2.30pm at The Empire Theatre in Toowoomba on 15 May.
We are delighted to welcome back Elizabeth Lewis who has had a remarkable rise to fame with her recent Master Class appearance with Renee Fleming at the Sydney Opera House Opera Awards, and also winning the Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship for 2015.
Joining her will be much loved baritone Jason Barry‐Smith. Jason and Libby will combine in the Mary Poppins selec on from the Last Night at the Proms concert of 2014. They will also perform the somewhat dark but extremely funny “Li le Priest” from Sweeny Todd.
A crowd favourite will be the Sheryl Watkins inspired Watkins Academy of Irish Dance who will perform some of those well‐known Irish dance selec ons. Adding to the broader “Bri sh Isles” feel of the show will be Pipe Major Roddy MacDonald who will play two of the most popular pieces ever wri en for pipes.
A highlight for this year’s Best of Bri sh will be the combined choirs from the Queensland Fes val Chorus and the Toowoomba Choral Society Contemporary Choral. As a special treat we will also present for the first me the Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School Chapel Choirs. These wonderful singers will perform music from the TV show the Vicar of Dibley and some favourite songs from the musical, Oliver.
The remainder of the year is shaping up to present the most exci ng concerts that have been developed in recent years. Rhonda Burchmore will perform with the Pops for the first me in a Broadway spectacular that will also feature the students from the Music Theatre
course at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. These are Australia’s rising stars of music theatre who will be sure to thrill you with song and dance.
The final concert for the year will be your choice. Included in this newsle er is a ques onnaire that asks you what is your favourite music performed by the Pops. The Pops pin‐up‐boy Gregory Moore will headline the concert but we will also feature some of the most requested solo performances by members of the orchestra.
Keep your eye open for the New Year’s Eve concert going on sale in early July.
I look forward to seeing you all at Best of Bri sh.
Warmest regards
Patrick

During this program Elizabeth was a principal performer in a new work en tled ABANDON in collabora on with contemporary dance company

The master of character, Jason Barry‐Smith has been entertaining Queensland audiences for longer than we all care to men on. In an interview for Limelight with Gillian Wills Jason says, “I like to announce the songs and be amusing. I make people feel at home, the music accessible. It’s about celebra ng the gi someone like me has been given. It’s a two way street”. Is it true from your experience that you can’t be a guru in your own village? “OK ... I made a choice that
Brisbane was the place I wanted to have a life as well as sing but not as a globe tro ng star. You can’t have both if you don’t travel. It’s a choice. A long me ago I asked myself how do I make this work if I’m based in one place. I like to think I have a big skill base and can contribute more”.
The “big skill base” is something of an understatement. Versa lity is Barry‐ Smith’s middle name. He’s not only a soloist but composes, arranges, conducts, is a creditable actor and, as a strong communicator he is commandeered to entertain at important func ons such as the launch of the Fes val of Classics at Government House last week. And, he is Opera Queensland’s Crea ve Director of Open Stage, a demanding and popular community enrichment program.
