Advanced Broadcast IP Networks

The Newtec Multiservice Broadcast system has been specifically

designed to provide innovative broadcast transmission services. The

broadcast transmission industry is very unique in the challenges of

evolving workflow needs and fundamental changes to the business

of being a broadcaster. Additionally, there are high operational

requirements for professional reliability and service availability.

The system is based on many years of operational knowledge and

award winning global implementations, where the built up experience

and understanding of these unique broadcast challenges has been

fed back into evolving the product, to uniquely address the needs

and challenges of this ‘broadcast transmission’ market.www.newtec.eu

Application Note Newtec Multiservice Broadcast System

The Newtec Multiservice Broadcast System addresses the

changing needs of the broadcast transmission market. It

follows & drives these trends and evolutions:

• Convergence of broadcast & ICT for ‘All-IP’ networks,

yet remain interoperable with an installed legacy base of

MPEG codecs

• Combination of VSAT & SCPC technologies, to provide

always-on IP connectivity and automated contribution

& exchange services for Live & File-based broadcast

transmission workflows

• Integration and automation of the equipment to provide

‘managed broadcast services’. This simplifies the end-

user and operational experience and you benefit from the

optimization of multiplexing multiple broadcast services

onto 1 single platform to provide compelling CAPEX &

OPEX efficiencies

• Scalable platform with hybrid IP connectivity between

multiple satellite frequency bands and terrestrial/

submarine fiber infrastructure, maintaining homogeneous

connectivity, manageability and services.

The system is very easy and cost-effective to ‘start small’, for

instance, just for live SD or HD newsgathering services, for a

few SNGs, and then grow the network over time.

This growth may happen, for example, by adding file based

contribution workflows, growing the SNG fleet, adding

Flyaways, adding fixed contribution capability for sports

or special events, extending to include content and asset

exchange and network delivery services (file and/or live) in a

hybrid satellite & terrestrial IP architecture.

The phased growth can easily fit with annual CAPEX budgets

and the OPEX costs can be carefully managed to ensure

efficient use of satellite and terrestrial bandwidth, with

capacity only expanded when actually required, ensuring the

highest possible utilization of costly bandwidth resources, for

the best ROI (Return on Investment) possible.

The Live and File transmission capability has been designed

to fit the specific needs of the professional broadcast industry.

The system integrates delivery of metadata, necessary

for effective broadcast file workflows. The flexible system

facilitates implementation of multiple workflows designed to

suit individual needs.

terminals. Low bitrate Fast Newsgathering (FNG).

File Based TV Contribution/ExchangeFile based Store & Forward capability for file newsgathering

and contribution, exchange of content in distributed

production and network delivery of finished assets.

Permanent TV & Radio Exchange/DistributionPermanent services for content feeds and primary distribution

of TV and Radio (e.g. DTT and FM Radio primary distribution).

Radio distribution in MPEG-4 HE-AAC also supports insertion

of dynamic RDS and localised advertisements in the managed

FM towers.

Always-On IP Connectivity ServicesOptional VoIP voice co-ordination capability, Intranet &

Internet IP connectivity. The always-on VSAT IP can also be

used, for example, to provide monitoring & control (M&C)

connectivity to remote broadcast towers and other SCADA

applications

Local & Central Content Storage/ArchivingLive & File transmissions can also be copied to the local

terminal storage and central Hub archiving for back-up

of content, time-shifted playout, smart mix of Live and File

workflows and integration in media asset management and

ingest platforms.

Hybrid Satellite/Terrestrial IPSession based setup of Live & File links across multiple

satellite bands (e.g. Ku and C) and hybrid satellite/terrestrial

IP networks for ‘footprint extender’ scenarios and global

content ingest and delivery.

Reservation, Scheduling & AutomationThe system manages satellite & IP capacity, scheduling and

automating the system equipment to provide baseband

& IP services that highly optimizes bandwidth to provide

professional-grade services, cost-effectively and easy to use.

Making a phone call used to be

like legacy broadcast transmission,

requiring operators to configure

and manually setup links.

The Newtec system is analogous

to modern telephony where the

user just dials end-to-end or sets

up a conference, accessing file based voice mail, with good

quality, high availability, and reliably.

Operational & Business Benefits

Maximize ROI through Fully Integrated Broadcast Solutions

Designed specifically for broadcast transmission needs, the deep integration and optimization provides clear ROI benefits

compared to generic connectivity alternatives.

The focus on enabling broadcast workflows and providing higher application layer functionality benefits broadcasters and service

providers with simplified ease-of-use, training, maintenance & operation with consequent reduction in OPEX.

Mixed Live & File Workflows

Multiplexing live and file workflows allows for higher utilization of satellite bandwidth (e.g. sending some files at off-peak times),

increasing service revenues.

Fit the System to YOUR needs!

The services are available either by owning and operating a dedicated Hub or via hosted managed services from a service

provider using the VNO flexibility.

The system is offered as both a turnkey solution and as building block modules for integration into existing network infrastructure.

Key Technologies

Next-Gen MF-TDMA and SCPCThe Newtec system combines the latest in next-gen ACM MF-TDMA VSAT technologies together with S2 Extension SCPC for

maximum spectral efficiency. The inbuilt QoS differentiates the services giving highest real-time performance with maximal

availability.

The managed SCPC sub-system, with flexible carrier management, fulfils the changing capacity needs of broadcasters.

Flexible Video & IP TransportThe optimal choice of encapsulation and transport of video &

IP over satellite can vary:

• Native IP and file services are most efficient using GSE

encapsulation. Transporting MPEG-2 TS over IP also allows

ICT routing and encryption techniques

• Interoperability with legacy SNGs and IRDs requires

transport of MPEG-2 TS over DVB-S2 (typically in single

stream CCM mode), minimizing encapsulation overheads

The Newtec Multiservice Broadcast System supports multiple

modes of Video and IP transport. This allows the flexibility to

choose the most appropriate ones, depending on customer

specific needs and constraints.

Hybrid Satellite/Terrestrial IP Network IntegrationIn the transition to IP, broadcast networks are increasingly

hybrid networks, using a combination of satellite, managed IP

networks & the unmanaged Internet. They are complementary

and all having their strengths and limitations. Newtec MS-

BC embraces the hybrid IP topologies for both live and file

workflows, extending the satellite footprint.

Working Today & Ready For Tomorrow

Award Winning Customer Reference Cases

The first customer deployment of the Newtec Multiservice

Broadcast System was for the Arab States Broadcasting

Union (ASBU), called ASBU-MENOS (Multimedia Exchange

Network Over Satellite).

ASBU-MENOS was and remains a revolutionary ‘All-IP’

networking system used to exchange multimedia content

over satellite. The ASBU-MENOS network is used to exchange

TV & Radio content. For TV, a single network multiplexes

exchange of news, sports, events & programs.

The platform was deployed prior to the Beijing 2008

Olympics and has since grown to support not only the initial

ASBU members but also non-member broadcasters (e.g.

NBC News Channel Sports) who view it as a cost-effective

reliable platform for contribution & reception of valuable

content.

The ASBU-MENOS network has been recognized by the

broadcast industry with multiple leading awards:

The Saudi Arabian Broadcast Corporation (SBC, formerly

MOCI), recognizing the benefits for their own national

broadcast transmission infrastructure, also invested in

the Newtec system, adding additional services (1st HDTV

deployment, DTT & FM radio primary distribution).

Get Ready for S2 Extensions, HEVC and UHDTV

There are a number of new broadcasting standards for quality

(UHDTV 4K/8K), compression (HEVC), satellite transmission

(S2 Extensions) and interference mitigation (DVB RF Carrier

ID) entering the market. There are real benefits to be gained

to the user experience and business fundamentals for

broadcasters.

For instance, the value proposition of 50% satellite bandwidth

savings will drive adoption of HEVC.

S2 Extensions are already available in Newtec products,

ensuring benefit from the improved satellite bandwidth

optimization.
