FROM THE LIBRARY
Upcoming Book Discussion
The library will be hosting a book discussion on Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. This
book was chosen as the If All of Rochester Reads the Same Book for 2013.
Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who
journeyed to the US when she was young. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn't the only man
who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village--they've all gone north. While
watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men--her
own "Siete Magnficos"--to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on
taking it over.
Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is
the story of an irresistible young woman's quest to find herself on both sides of the fence. From

2013 Flower City Challenge
Training season is underway for the Flower City Challenge! As we were last year, Harris Beach will be
the volunteer sponsor for the Flower City Challenge on April 27-28. Join the Harris Beach team either
as an athlete or volunteer for this terrific weekend celebrating Rochester and supporting two of our
firms largest clients, Unity Health System and Chobani. We would like team captains/co-captains for
each event, so please volunteer!
On Saturday, April 27, there are two events: a duathlon 5K run/20 mile bike/5K run and a
triathlon: 5K run/20 mile bike/3 mile Kayak paddle. There is also the option of doing these as a
relay team.
On Sunday, April 28 there is the Unity Health System Rochester City Half Marathon (13.1
miles) and the Wegmans Family 5K run or walk.
Volunteers are always welcome and will be able to wear the Harris Beach volunteer shirt as you cheer
on the members of the Harris Beach team our competitors last year said it gave them such a boost to
see a volunteer member of the HB family cheering them on along the way. View complete details and
registration at: www.flowercitychallenge.com
Participants will need to register on their own and pay the entrance fee through the web site above. Once you have registered, let Danielle
Savino know the event you will be participating in so we can track our Harris Beach participants and prepare a Harris Beach team technical
shirt and water bottle you can use during the Challenge. Also, please let Danielle know if you are interested in being a team captain/co-
captain. We will provide periodic updates on team members through NewsVine until the event.
Let Hilary Guthrie or Chris Jagel know if you have questions. Hilary and Chris will be running in the half marathon on Sunday followed
by eating lots of Chobani and hopefully not a visit to Unity.

A special thank you to our Book Sort volunteers: Jim Beyer, Courtney Fay, Debbie Burley,Jean Lamicela, Karen Trost and Kevin
Tompsett, and to Bill Albert for organizing the book sort. We collected hundreds of accelerated reader books. The books that did not
qualify for the AR program will be used as book prizes at TBGC or will be donated to area womens shelters or other charities identified
by CIC.
Thank you for your generous monetary contributions and your support of these collection efforts!
Opportunities for Attorneys to be Reading Mentors
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester needs professional volunteers to assist with its reading program. The program typically runs from 3:00
p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at the main campus, 500 Genesee Street. Harris Beach is actively soliciting attorneys interested in
volunteering on a weekly or monthly basis. How and to what extent we volunteer will depend on the number of attorney volunteers we
have. We envision selecting a day of the week or one day a month and rotating attorneys through shifts. The time commitment will not be
demanding and we will structure the schedule flexibly. If you are interested (in volunteering or learning more about the program), please
contact Heidi Gregory. FYI Phil Spellane and VV Thiagarajan are current reading mentors! Feel free to talk to them directly with
questions or concerns. This is a very rewarding program.
