SPOTLIGHT ON Adrian M. Di Bisceglie, MD, was joined by his children, Anne-Marie and Michael, at the investiture ceremony on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, when he was invested as the inaugural holder of the Badeeh A. & Christine V. Bander Chair in Internal Medicine.

Di Bisceglie said “I’m very grateful for this gift from the Bander family. Gifts like this one allow us to recruit excellent people, encouraging the department to grow.”

Steven Bander, MD, and his wife Patricia, created the endowed chair as a way to support Saint

Louis University's

growing national and international reputation. Dr. Bander is an associate clinical professor in the Division of Nephrology at Saint Louis University.

At the ceremony, Dr. Bander spoke about his parents, whom he honored by naming the chair after them. "My parents stressed constantly the need for education and to do what's right by yourself and others. They are very simple rules that I think have allowed me to achieve some of my success." VACCINATION FOR SEASONAL INFLUENZA MANDATORY Saint Louis University Hospital and the University Medical Group have jointly agreed to a new policy requiring seasonal influenza vaccination of physicians and other staff having patient contact. This policy is consistent with CDC Guidelines and many other organizations and has been approved by Employee Health. Announcements will be made when the new vaccine is available and participation of affected individuals will be monitored. RECOGNITION Nadia Wasi Iqbal, M.D., assistant professor, Division of Nephrology, received the “Physician of the Quarter” Award presented by Saint Louis University Hospital in August 2010. Sharon E. Frey, M.D., professor and interim director of the Division of Infectious Diseases, received the St. Louis Business Journal 2010 Health Care Hero Award in the physicians category. DIVISION OF CARDIOLOGY NEWS Michael J. Lim, M.D., associate professor and interim director of the Division of Cardiology, participated in the scientific sessions of Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics in

Washington, DC, September 21-25, 2010, as a moderator and lecturer. DIVISION OF ENDOCRINOLOGY NEWS

Reigh-Yi Lin, PhD, joined the Division of Endocrinology on September 1, 2010 as an associate professor. Her recruitment was supported in part by the Cancer Center. She received her PhD from Albert Einstein College

of Medicine and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer and a second fellowship at the New York University School of Medicine. During her 5 years as the Director of Mount Sinai’s Program for Thyroid Stem Cell Biology and Development, Dr. Lin led a research team that successfully converted mouse stem cells into thyroid cells exhibiting the structural and functional properties of natural thyroid neofollicles. Most recently, Dr. Lin developed a highly-respected and successful thyroid cancer stem cell program. Her research has been published in several prestigious scientific journals and she has been invited to speak at conferences around the world to discuss stem cell biology in gene regulation and drug discovery. DIVISION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AND HEPATOLOGY NEWS The Division has three exciting fundraisers coming up in the very near future: the Lucky Ducky Derby, Denim and Diamonds, and the Green Event.

This is the second year for the Lucky Ducky Derby which will be held at the Babbling Brook on the grounds by the Doisy Research Building at noon on Friday, October 1. The grand prize is $300 and there are other donated gifts from Lumiere Casino Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the Chase Park Plaza. The ducks are $5.00 each or 6 for $25.00. You may call Mary Ann Barrale or Carol Stengel in GI at 314-577-8764 to purchase your ducks. Proceeds benefit liver education and research through the Saint Louis University Liver Center. On Saturday, October 9, 2010, between 6:00 and 10:00, The Friends will be sponsoring the 8th Annual Diamonds Dinner at Meadowbrook Country Club, 200 Meadowbrook Country Club Estates, Ballwin, Missouri. This event includes silent and live auctions followed by dinner, awards, and a guest speaker. On Saturday, October 16, 2010, between 6:00 and 9:00 pm, The Friends of the Saint Louis University Liver Center will be sponsoring The Green Event/Any Way the Wind Blows at Alberici Constructors Headquarters, 1800 Page Avenue with food, music, raffle, and "green" vendors to raise funds for the Liver Center and to help people become more "green" in their daily lives. Lewis, administrative assistant in General Internal Medicine, retired on September 24, 2010 after working at Saint

Louis University for 42 years. Alice started working in the Human Relations Department of Saint Louis University in 1968 and has been a member of the Department of Internal Medicine since 1989. She coordinated medical student educational activities for the department for 21 years.

Sonia Chacko MD, will join the faculty of General Internal Medicine on October 1, 2010. She completed her medical education at PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research in India. Dr. Chacko

completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where she also had the opportunity to serve as Chief Resident. DIVISION OF GERIATRIC MEDICINE NEWS Julie K. Gammack, MD, associate professor, was recently appointed by Dean Alderson as Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME). She will be working under Dr. Robert Heaney on the accreditation process for Saint Louis University School of Medicine residency and fellowship training programs. The GME office has recently expanded to include additional support staff and is hiring an Educational Specialist to assist in data and outcome analysis of our training programs.

DIVISION OF IMMUNOBIOLOGY Saint Louis University has received a 2 year, $326,246 grant from US Department of Housing and Urban Development to study whether commercially available "green" chemical products work in destroying mold on building materials. This is in addition to an ongoing $500,000 HUD-funded study examining the long-term effectiveness of mold remediation chemicals. Anu Dixit, PhD, MPH, principal investigator of the 2 projects and a visiting assistant professor in Immunobiology said “the long-term effectiveness of antimicrobial products or microbiocides is in question” and is exploring whether “green” products are a better option.

"Our goal is to find out if commercially available chemical products that are labeled green work to destroy or reduce mold growing on building materials." Dr. Dixit has developed a method to test the effectiveness of mold remediation products. In a controlled environment, she grows mold on building materials, treats the materials with green chemicals, then assesses whether mold grows back. Dr. Dixit said, "Treatment of various mold contaminated materials with chemicals alone is not a substitute for proper cleaning and remediation. Moldy porous and semi-porous indoor materials should be ideally removed and discarded."
