RECOGNITION The Human Resources Recognition Committee paid surprise visits to their first group of SLUStars for 2012. Out of the 86 submissions, eight people were chosen to be honored as a SLUStar for living out the values of the Jesuit mission in their work and lives. Each SLUStar was presented with a pin, certificate, balloon, Billiken Bucks and SLU event tickets. A celebration breakfast will be held in their honor on September 12, 2012. The Department of Internal Medicine is proud to announce one of our own, MaryAnn Barrale, administrative assistant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, who is a winner!

"MaryAnn is kind to everyone and always willing to go the extra mile, including inviting faculty and fellows to her home for the holidays when they may not have anywhere else to go. She often stays late

at night to work on projects that help benefit the morale of the division. She juggles schedules daily to accommodate the needs of our patients during a prolonged staffing shortage, all with such grace and professionalism. She also takes time to volunteer and has helped with many of the division's fundraisers. She was also voted volunteer of the year from the Friends of Saint Louis University Live Center in the past for her outstanding efforts with them. The University needs more employees like her because she really sets the bar for excellence."

ANNOUNCEMENT – Hospital Governing Board Appointment Joseph H. Flaherty, MD, Associate Chairman for Education and professor, Geriatric Medicine, was nominated by SLU Hospital in January and approved by Father Biondi to serve on the Hospital Governing Board. His 3-year term will begin in March. The purpose of the Governing Board is to recommend and implement hospital policy, promote patient safety and ensure quality patient care, and provide for organizational management and planning of the hospital. The Governing Board has ultimate responsibility for safety and quality of care, and treatment rendered in the hospital. DIVISION OF CARDIOLOGY The Cardiology Division celebrated February as Heart Month by partnering with Saint Louis University Hospital in the National Go Red for Women day on February 3. Members of the SLUH Community were invited to participate in the Go Red for Women photo (see below).

The Division of Cardiology is promoting heart disease awareness by sponsoring Billiken games at Chaifetz Arena and St. Louis Blues games during the month. In partnering with the Blues, advertising for SLUCare physicians is provided with the use of signage and program mention during games and radio ads to be aired. Interviews discussing cardiovascular disease and SLUCare will be played during intermissions during the games. On the SLUCare website, a self screening test with a link to making an appointment with a SLUCare cardiologist will be posted. Joshua M. Stolker, MD, was quoted in the St. Louis Business Journal about transradial catheterization, a cardiac procedure that accesses the heart via the wrist rather than the groin. Michael J. Lim, MD, was interviewed by Fox 2 News in the morning about Winter Weather and Your Heart Health. Paul J. Hauptman, MD, was appointed to represent the Heart Failure Society of America on the Technical Panel Task Force of the American College of Cardiology on Appropriate Use Criteria for Implantable Cardiac Rhythm Devices. DIVISION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AND HEPATOLOGY On February 17, 2012 the Saint Louis University Liver Center received a check in the amount of $250,000 from the Friends of the SLU Liver Center organization. Leisa Duff, Executive Director of the Friends organization presented the check to Dr. Adrian Di Bisceglie, co-director of the SLU Liver Center and Dr. Brent Tetri, a member of the SLU Liver Center.

The Friends is a 501c3 organization that was started in 2002 by a group of grateful liver disease patients who were treated by SLU physicians. The sole mission of the organization is to raise funds that support research, treatment and cure of liver diseases at the Saint Louis University Liver Center. Since its inception, the Friends organization has donated $2,334,500 to the SLU Liver Center. The Liver Center is very fortunate to have an organization like the Friends to partner with!

DIVISION OF GERIATRIC MEDICINE 23rd Annual Saint Louis University Summer Geriatric Institute – "Aging: Back to Basics" will be held at the Margaret McCormick Doisy Research Center June 12-13, 2012. The audience for this program includes all professionals working in geriatrics and gerontology, with a special emphasis on clinicians and administrators, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, nursing home administrators, and those who specialize in alternative medicine. The overall goal of this annual conference is to provide participants with up-to-the-minute information about geriatric care and social issues affecting the well-being of older adults. DIVISION OF HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY

The Division of Hematology and Oncology is pleased to announce that Carol J. McComber, RN, MSN, was appointed Clinic Nurse Manager on January 17, 2012. Ms. McComber is a graduate of Saint Louis

University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as a Masters of Science in Nursing Administration. She has several years of management experience as both an administrator and manager in local inpatient, home care and outpatient settings. She has been involved with developing clinical policies and procedures, staff recruitment, training and development. She has focused on increasing patient staff and physician satisfaction.

Jack M. Lionberger, MD, PhD, joined the Division of Hematology and Oncology as an assistant professor on January 1. He received his PhD and MD degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He

completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals & Clinics; was an oncology fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center; and a genetics of aging fellow at the University of Washington. Prior to joining Saint Louis University he was an acting instructor in medical oncology at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. DIVISION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES, ALLERGY AND IMMUNOLOGY (IDAI) Azra Blazevic, DVM, MSPH, has been promoted to Assistant Research Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Allergy & Immunology. Dr. Blazevic earned her Master's degree at Saint Louis University. Her research focuses on TB vaccine development. The effective date of her appointment was November 1, 2011. She earned her DVM at the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia. Robert B. Belshe, MD, was an invited speaker at the NIAID Council on January 20, 2012. His presentation was on the "Herpevac Trial for Women". Drs. Raymond Slavin and Anupma Dixit were among the contributors on the Clinical Reviews in Allergy and Immunology paper "Fungi and allergic lower respiratory tract diseases".

DIVISION OF PULMONARY, CRITICAL CARE AND SLEEP MEDICINE

Ashok Kirumaki, MD, joined the division on January 1, 2012. Though board certified and a practicing pulmonologist for some time, he recently completed fellowship in Critical Care Medicine

and Lung Transplantation at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He is also ABIM board certified in Sleep Medicine. Respiratory: An Integrated Approach to Disease - This new book, authored by Andrew J. Lechner, PhD, secondary professor, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and professor in the Department of Pharmacological and Physiological Science, and George M. Matuschak, MD, past director of the division, is the second volume in a new Human Organ System series by McGraw-Hill being edited by Paul G. Schmitz, MD. The book's 40 chapters were written by 15 current and former SLU faculty members who teach these topics in the 5-week Respiratory Module taken by all second-year medical students at SLU. Coverage includes the fundamentals of lung structure and function, and advanced topics such as the pathology, diagnosis, and management of obstructive and restrictive lung diseases; pulmonary vascular disorders and emboli; neoplasms, masses, and congenital anomalies; and infections among both pediatric and adult populations. An entire subsection is

devoted to evaluating patients with respiratory diseases by chest exam, diagnostic bronchoscopy, x-rays and CT images, pulmonary function testing, and by measurement and interpretations of blood gases, sputum, effusions, and pulmonary lavage." The Sleep Center of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine has been nominated for Best of 2012 – Sleep Doctors and Facilities! Best of 2012: Sleep Doctors and Facilities was designed as a recognition program to find the best sleep doctors and/or facilities that redefine best practices and help others advance in the sleep industry. The Best of 2012: Sleep Doctors and Facilities April issue will reach a nationwide audience through 20,000 Sleep Review subscribers and thousands more who read Sleep Review and its related products online. Department of Internal Medicine Stars Program

The Internal Medicine Stars Program is an employee recognition program designed to acknowledge and reward outstanding employees for their contributions to the Department of Internal Medicine. An Internal Medicine Star is a staff employee who has demonstrated an excellent work ethic and performance in their job duties. Selection will be based on the employee’s eligibility and

demonstration that the nominee’s performance has met one or more of the following standards: successful cost savings suggestions or effort; successful one time project or accomplishment; exceptional service; or performance above and beyond the call of duty. All Internal Medicine staff employees who have worked in the department for at least 6 months and have completed their orientation period are eligible for nomination. Nominations will be reviewed and one winner will be selected quarterly by the Internal Medicine Stars Committee. The employee who is selected will be rewarded with an incentive payment in the amount of $100 Billiken Bucks. All Internal Medicine faculty and staff are encouraged to submit nominations for outstanding employees. CONGRATULATIONS To Sarah Bobell, secretary, General Internal Medicine, and her husband, Mike, on the birth of their daughter, Maya Evangeline. She arrived January 26, 2012 and weighed 6 lbs 15 oz. To Julie Gammack, MD, Geriatric Medicine and her husband, Dale Lewis, on the birth of their son, Mitchell Parker Lewis. He arrived February 14, 2012 and weighed 10 lb 5 oz. Camille J. Goff, long time employee in the Department of Internal Medicine (25 years in IM, 33 years at SLU) will retire on March 30. Ms. Goff served as

assistant to Dr. Coy Fitch while he was chairman of the department and more recently as faculty administrator.
