Jeppesen Provides AntarcticRescue SupportRecently, Jeppesen had theprivilege to assist RaytheonPolar Services in themedical evacuation of one oftheir employees stationed atthe South Pole. RaytheonPolar Services, under a grantfrom the National ScienceFoundation, runs the U.S.Antarctic Program. An employee at the South Pole station becameill, and it was determined a medical evacuation was necessary.Unfortunately, it was still winter in Antarctica, meaning it wasdark and quite cold at the South Pole, with temperatures hoveringaround minus 65 degrees Celsius. Normally, flights to the SouthPole do not begin operating until mid to late October, butcircumstances dictated that a special operation was necessary.

Kenn Borek Air from Calgary, Canada was contracted to fly twoTwin Otter aircraft down to the South Pole to extract the patient.Jeppesen was contacted to assist Raytheon Polar Services withflight following and to provide weather forecasts. The flight fromCalgary down to Punta Arenas, Chile was uneventful, but this iswhere the mission got interesting. The Twin Otters flew fromPunta Arenas to Rothera on the Antarctic Peninsula onSeptember 16. They then had to wait for a window ofopportunity to fly to the South Pole and back. The weather wasabsolutely miserable at times on Rothera while the flight crewswere waiting, with winds gusting to over 50 knots in snow andblowing snow. The Twin Otters can operate into temperatures aslow as minus 70 degrees Celsius, but must have at least 1 milevisibility and greater than a 1000 foot ceiling to land and depart. Finally, on September 21, the long awaited window opened up

long enough for the crews tofly to the South Pole, pick uptheir passenger and return toRothera safely. From there, the patient was flown toPunta Arenas and thenboarded a private jet to flyback to the United States formedical treatment.

Jeppesen is proud to havecooperated on a team that

worked diligently and professionally to safely return an illpatient from a very demanding environment.

Jeppesen Preferred Ground HandlerSpotlight: IGS Ground Services –Keflavik, Iceland

For those in the corporate aviation

community who have ever traversed the

North Atlantic, Iceland is well-known

as one of the primary locations for conducting a technical

stop. With a reputation as a sometimes wild, wind swept, cold

land, Iceland can also display a great beauty, which is simply

breathtaking. Fortunately, the one thing any visitor can be

guaranteed is a warm and professional welcome from the

Jeppesen preferred handler in Keflavik (BIKF), IGS Ground

Services. IGS is a wholly-owned but separate business unit

within the Icelandair group which also provides ground

handling for commercial aircraft.

With a main runway length of 10,000 feet, Keflavik is a fully

operational international airfield that is jointly run by NATO

and the local Airport Authority. NATO still has a small number

of military aircraft located on the far side of the airfield

opposite the passenger terminal. Operators should be

aware that, at times, military exercises are conducted on the

airfield, although these generally do not interfere with

civilian operations. There are no noise abatement restrictions

on the airfield.

During the winter months when wind speeds can get

very high, IGS Ground Services, as well as the other handlers

at Keflavik, place sandbags around all wheel points to

ensure there is no aircraft movement. There are also

constant FOD patrols to ensure that the aircraft does not

become damaged.

Jeppesen Certified By FAAAs Internet Service Provider

This past September, the Federal AviationAdministration (FAA) certified Jeppesen asthe first and only commercial entity toreceive the newly created QualifiedInternet Communications Provider (QICP)certification, making it one of only twoorganizations to achieve it. NAIMES, a USgovernment-sponsored agency, is the other.

In order to receive this covetedcertification, Jeppesen has successfullymet or exceeded all of the parameters setforth in the FAA’s advisory circular,AC 00-62, the purpose of which is todescribe a process and set forth a standardfor ensuring that vendors meet the FAAstandards for security, reliably andaccuracy when disseminating weather andNOTAMs via the Internet.

For the end users of Jeppesen’sweather and NOTAM products, the QICPcertification provides yet anotherassurance of secure and reliable access tothat data. Additionally, FAR Part 121 and135 operators can now use the Internet asa source for weather and NOTAMs,and remain compliant under thoseregulations, by retrieving that informationfrom Jeppesen.

Jeppesen weather and NOTAM data isavailable from numerous Jeppesen flightplanning and operations managementapplications, including FliteStar, JetPlanner,JetPlan.com and OPSControl.

New Regional Sales Representative AnnouncedJeppesen recently named George DeClueas Northeast U.S. account executive for theBusiness and General Aviation division.Based near White Plains, New York,George will be responsible for all businessaviation sales in New York, Connecticut,New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island,Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont,Pennsylvania and Eastern Canada.

George brings over 16 years of aviationand computer technology sales andmanagement experience to his newposition with Jeppesen. The addition ofGeorge to the Jeppesen business aviationsales team will certainly strengthen thecompany’s position in this importantregion and will be instrumental in helpingto achieve its goal of providing customerswith integrated solutions to meet theirbusiness aviation needs.

George holds a BBA degree in corporatefinance from Adelphi University in LongIsland, New York and an AAS degree inmechanical power technology from theState University of New York in LongIsland, New York. He also holds a privatepilot certificate with an instrument rating.

IGS Ground Services (continued)

Within the last few months, IGS has completed an upgrade toboth its passenger and crew lounge facilities. These can befound on the ramp level of the main terminal, with easy accessto the aircraft parking areas. The new lounges are light and airy, with a stylish and relaxed feel about them. From the crewlounge, there is convenient access to the operations area, whereflight planning, weather and NOTAM information can easily becollected or requested.

The IGS agents are always happy to bring any flightinformation directly out to the aircraft in order to facilitate aquick turnaround. An important note to any passenger or crewmember arriving into Iceland is that you and all of yourbaggage will be screened upon departure. This is conductedin the main terminal building, where IGS staff members areon hand to ensure that this is a swift and painless process.

Contrary to popular belief, Icelanders are a warm andfriendly people who, in general, speak excellent English (a factmost appreciated by this writer, who struggled with locationnames). One of the local tourist spots is the Blue Lagoon. Thisis a hot water spa that is fed directly from deep, underground, volcanic action that seeps up to the surface and into the water. The spa, which derives its name from its blue tint, is verywarm and relaxing. It is no exaggeration to say it is the bestbath you will ever have! This is a very popular destination withthe locals and can get busy on the weekends, especially duringthe summer months when tourists flood in.

IGS Ground Services at Keflavik offers only the best to thecorporate aircraft operator—fast, efficient service backed byyears of experience to produce a professional, yet friendly, approach to ground handling.
