January 19 th , 2018 Dear Parents, This week has seen two very important St. Saviour’s “Happenings” which I would like to tell you about. Firstly, World Faith Day – Wednesday 17 th January Thanks to Mrs. Spence’s amazing ideas and organising skills, the children were treated to a daylong celebration of World Faiths. Each class completed extra work on the World Religion they are studying this term and these lessons were witnessed by three Governors who had a Learning Walk around the school escorted not by a Senior Member of Staff but by the RE Ambassadors! Well done to Luke Morris, Sarai Pearman, Salome Benjamin, Luca Kassar, Thomas Lopez, Alice May Comer-Turkentine, Stella Krause-Paxos, Haydn Lapper, Jaydon Nath, Rosina Asante, Shem Esayas and Harper Bone. Here is an extract of what the Governors saw and thought on their Learning Walk: Governors gave the following comments about them: A credit to Mrs Spence Worked very well Considerate Interested in the learning which was taking place in different classrooms to their own They had excellent manners and held doors opened Very good at patiently telling them where/when to go to the next classroom Other comments about the walk from each class: Nursery – was excellent to see that they were thinking about their own religion of Christianity. They were talking about going to church and were about to sing Kum Ba Yah. Reception – they were focussing on stain glass windows and had already spoken with Father Bradley on Monday before church about this. The children were able to understand some of the different symbols found in the window. Year 1 – their focus was Islam and the children were designing geometric patterns. The children were very engaged and designing lovely bright patterns. They were aware that in Islam you are not allowed to have images of God in a Mosque. Year 2 – their focus was Judaism and the children were learning about the Sukkot Festival. The governors commented the excellent subject knowledge of the teachers on this topic. Year 3 – Buddhism – the children were taking their meditation very seriously when the governors visited. Prior to this they had looked at different Buddhist symbols. Year 4 – Sikhism – the children were making mosaics of the Khanda. The children were focussing on the symbolism of this and what the parts meant before making the mosaic. Year 5 – Hinduism – here, the class were very calm whilst listening to Hindu inspired music. The children were having a go at drawing their own deities having understood that Hindus believe that God is made up of several of these. Year 6 – Judaism – the children were making mezuzahs. They were able to explain the different symbols and parts of this special Jewish symbol. Throughout: There was a lot of vocabulary on display, which the children were able to understand and recognise, the pictures next to the words helped everyone to understand. The children were very happy to share their learning with the Governors and could explain and articulate themselves very well. The children were beginning to link their understanding of Christian symbols to other World Faiths. We were also very grateful to our Faith Leader visitors: Geoff Biggs (Christianity), Upasana Chag (Hinduism), Mark Creeger (Judaism) and Srivati (Buddhism) who is the founder of the charity Bodhi Tree and does School visits for the London Buddhist Centre in Bethnal Green and teaches Mindfulness in schools in that area. I know they were very impressed with the welcome they received from all of us as well as how informed and engaged the children were. I think they also liked the flowers they were presented with! PTA News I take GREAT pleasure in announcing the launch of our PTA 100 Club. This is a marvellous opportunity for us to raise funds for the PTA as well as for number holders to win money every month. I have attached a copy of the rules for you to consider if you want to take part. There are only 100 numbers available so you may need to be rather fast! The entry form details will be sent to you later today via ParentMail. The first draw will take place after half term and each month’s draw will take place during Friday assemblies. The draw will be made from a traditional raffle drum and be made by children in each class in turn. Bingo Night – will be taking place on Friday 26th January. Those parents and staff who come along last year will vouch for the fact it was an exciting and fun filled evening. So, please put this date in your diary so we can have a really big group of players. You don't need any prior experience other than enthusiasm! The Circus Comes to Town! I am sure you have looked at the school website (http://www.stsavioursprimary.co.uk/news/the-circus-comes-to-st-saviours/nggallery/page/4) for news about The Amazing Lucas Jet who wowed us all with his amazing circus skills last week and that your children will have raved about him also. The news this week is that St. Saviour’s has made its way on to Lucas’ website! Please follow this link: https://www.ukjuggler.com/single-post/2018/01/19/London---Circus-Workshops-for-schools Imaginarium 2018 – Friday 13th April Plans have already started for this year’s Imaginarium and the first meeting to talk about arrangements was held yesterday. Mike Bone and Ashley Tobin have agreed to be the Parents’ Lead and Mrs. Nuechtern and I will be leading the staff. Please put Friday 13th April in your diary as it is going to be a really special day! We will be sending a ParentMail message out to you on Monday so please look out for this and how you can join in the fun and excitement. It’s all about the children! We are delighted to announce that Lucas Jet is as excited as we are that he will be joining us for Imaginarium this year. He promised that adults can have a go as well! More announcements about different activities will be sent home to you as they are finalised. The 2018 SpecSaviour’s Official Photograph I am proud to announce the latest photograph of the SpecSaviour’s group – dedicated to all children and staff who wear glasses. This shows just what a happy and distinguished group we all are! Parking on Shirland Road Please can we remind you that you should not park your cars on the zig zag lines outside the school building during drop off and pick up. You must also not double park along Shirland Road. Thank you. Year 6 Cake Sale Thank you for sending your children in with small amounts of money to allow them to buy a cake or two from the Year Six Cake Sale. This was extremely well run and very popular. I will send out details about who much was raised soon but there were no cakes left at the end of the afternoon! Year Six - Super Ambassadors Extraordinaire! A meeting for prospective Nursery Parent was held on Tuesday and, as always, Year Six act as tour guides. I am sure you will remember the time before your child came to St. Saviour’s and you were given a similar tour of the school. Every visitor heaped great praise on their guides as they were so well behaved, courteous, kind and knowledgeable about our school – just what we ask of them and we don’t pay them a penny!! Eco-Committee – a message from Mrs Daly Calling all environmentally friendly children! St Saviour’s are looking for a new Eco-Committee. Here in St Saviour’s, looking after the environment has always been a priority. The school community encourages recycling, composting and environmentally friendly modes of transport. We are keen to select an Eco-

Committee to monitor and raise awareness of environmental issues. If you think you have the right skills to be part of the Eco-Committee, please ask your teacher for an application form. Maths Week – w/b Monday 29th January I have re-attached the information about Maths Week so that you are clear about what the children will be doing on these days. During assembly next Friday morning, each class will be making a presentation about what they will be making for sale the following week. If this presentation is satisfactory (!), I will present them with a loan to buy the ingredients they need to produce their wares. This will need to be paid back from the profits they make. All profits can be spent by the class on the resources they would like in their rooms. Please make note that from the Monday after half term, school lunches will cost £2 per day. Buster’s Weekend Friend: Buster’s is going to be spending the weekend with Ruben Oliveira as, for one thing, he has had another wonderful week: continuing to work hard and make progress. His biggest triumph this week was on Tuesday when he was one of the Year Six Tour Guides for Prospective Nursery Parents. He acted like a true ambassador and was a shining example of what we want our children to be when they reach the top class. Ruben is always kind a very, very gentle to children and staff alike. Great stuff, Ruben! Mass on Monday 22nd January will be led by Year Six on the theme of ‘Following Jesus.’ The reading will be taken from Mark 1:14-20: Follow Me. Stars of the Week Nursery: Julius Clifton for doing amazing drawing and writing all week. We love your positive attitude and are enjoying hearing you talk more as you have become really confident! Reception: Bella Fashola for being dedicated to always trying her best at writing and maths. You did some wonderful descriptive writing about the Gruffalo this week. Well done! Year One: June Michael for working so hard this week. You wrote some fantastic algorithms in computing. Well done! Year Two: Edoardo Cencini for tying his best and working hard all week. We are so impressed with your enthusiastic and dedicated attitude. Year Three: Sarai Pearman for stepping up to her role as a RE Ambassador for World Faith’s Day. You showed excellent enthusiasm and were very attentive to our guests. Well done! Year Four: Fionn Connolly for his consistent approach to his learning. You always get the job done – good effort, Fionn! Year Five: Harriet Squire-Cross for having another fantastic week. You are an absolute pleasure to teach and have made great progress. You particularly impress us with your knowledge during World Faith Day. Well done! Year Six: Luca Bailey for having a most productive week. You have worked hard and made good progress, particularly in Maths. Brilliant! Future Date for your diary PTA Quiz Night - Friday 2nd March. And Finally……..in assembly today, I played a section from a very funny BBC4 programme called John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme. The section is a joke on the well-known song called “She’ll be coming round the mountain”. If you would like to listen this is the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09l21yy#play and the sketch runs from 12:28-14:45 minutes. I would also recommend the whole programme and series to you – it is so funny! With all best wishes, Ms. Woodford
