Student Success The start of the school year has brought a lot of sporting successes. Congratulations to Danielle Drinnan of Year 9 who competed in the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth this month. Congratulations also to Year 8 students Lily Louden, Stephanie Hulme, Clare Moutter for a tremendous performance at a recent Triathlon event held at Penrith Lakes. Year 11 student Matthew Hannah has been selected for the Australian Under-20s Ultimate Frisbee Team. This has followed an arduous selection process of 4 day trails in Melbourne during the last school holidays. Matthew was one of 65 vying for one of only 20 spots on the team and will now be going to Poland at the start of
August to compete in the World Championships. He has only been playing for 2 years and is the youngest player on the team at only 16 years of age. Matthew plays for the U18 NSW side as well as his Open Club team.

Brentin Azzopardi continues to achieve success in his chosen sport of Ice Hockey. After some years spent playing and training overseas in Canada, Brentin returned to Model Farms last year to complete his senior schooling while continuing to perform at an elite level. He recently played with the Australian Under-18 Ice Hockey Team and won gold at the World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. After defeating Bulgaria 4-3, Chinese Taipei 6-3 and Israel 4-3, Brentin and his Aussie team mates took the gold medal in a nail biting game clash against Turkey who were undefeated going in to the final rounds of competition.
Castle Hill Show Our students did very well at the recent Castle Hill Show coming away with a number of awards. Their school exhibit was awarded best exhibit at the show (non-commercial), the Pumpkins got ribbons and the Duck Eggs won first prize. Megan Clancy of Year 10 was appointed Miss Show Girl in training (junior) with the Model Farms students coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the junior poultry judging. Our sheep were outstanding. Our ram won best sheep at the show and our trio of sheep won first place.
Building Upgrades During the upcoming school holidays the roof on Block 7 is eventually being replaced by the DoE. This will mean that whenever it rains heavily like it tends to do during our winter months, we will not sustain as much water damage as we have in the past. Work will be concluded before school returns for term 2 and there should not be any disruption to learning time as a result.

I have been assured that there are plans in the pipeline to have our other rooves replaced but this will happen in good time. In the meantime we are happy with what we get by way of renovation of our 40 year old buildings. Permission to Publish There are so many great things happening here at school and they all deserve to be publicised so that students receive due recognition for the work they do. However we need parent permission to put student names and photographs in the newsletter, on the school Facebook page or the website etc. This information is currently being updated so that we can be confident we have every parent’s permission for their child’s image or name to be used. When your child brings home a form in the coming weeks seeking your permission, I encourage you to complete it and let the school know as soon as possible what your wishes are. We will not publish any child’s image if the parent has indicated that they do not wish this to happen but we also cannot publish if we have not been informed either way. International Women’s Day On the 8th of March, Model Farms High School hosted an International Women’s Day luncheon for senior girls from our local community of high schools. This was organised by Ms Aldabbas, Ms Lumley and a band of willing Year 11 helpers who went to great lengths to ensure that every female in the room, students and teachers, felt very appreciated and welcome. During the lunch there were amazing speeches from some incredibly inspiring young women. Two of which were our own ex-student, Parvathi Subramanian and current student Gianna Edirimanne. Both girls spoke beautifully about the role of women in society and what we can do to ensure that young girls around the globe have the freedom to grow into intelligent and inspiring women who reach their potential and make a difference in the world. I thought Gianna in particular, gave a very touching speech and have, with her permission, printed it below. Please take the time to read it and I hope you are as moved by it as I was.
International Women’s Day “Good afternoon, my name is Gianna Edirimanne and I am honoured to be your MC for today’s International Women’s Day Conference. I would like to commence today’s proceedings by first acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, the Darug people and extend that respect to aborigines both past and present. On international women’s day we celebrate the inspiring and courageous work that women are doing to secure women’s rights and shape a more tolerant and equitable society. We also reflect on the work that remains and remember the many women whose voices go unheard and who continue to be excluded from realising their full potential. It’s extremely important for us as young women to be aware of the inequalities which exist. However, what’s even more important is what we choose to do with this awareness and how we channel that energy. For myself personally, I could almost say that I’ve lived most of my life “outside my gender” and by that I mean that I almost forget that I’m female because I genuinely believe that the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses which I embody are a part of human nature and something shared by both states of being, male and female. The future which you have the potential to create is shaped by your visions, passions and love for what you do and that is what will shake barriers and
redefine what we know today as gender roles. So I encourage you all to find what
drives you and pursue it whole heartedly because no one can take that away from
you.
Days like these show the power us women have to support one another and bind together in such a profound way. This is why I would like speak with you all about something which baffles me and is very much real amongst all women at school, in
4
the workplace and online. And that’s Girl on Girl hate. We as women are incredibly resilient, influential, graceful and yet powerful at the same time and we are ultimately beautiful in our complexity. We all too often forget to love these things about ourselves and in others. Girl on girl hate is real and might just be the thing that’s limiting our progression. I feel as though this is something we can all relate to and that we are more than capable of destroying girl on girl hate because we ourselves brought it to life. The reason for our actions is jealousy which is a result of the expectations held against us as we are persuaded to be the text book version of beauty and to refrain from embracing individuality. If we were to take the energy we put into tearing each other down into building each other up and turn jealousy into admiration and support. Imagine what we would be able to accomplish? So, let’s encourage one another and see each other as our sisters, not competition. Even though we are all so different and unique remember that we are all going through the same thing, we’ve all been there. Let’s redefine beauty, as so much more than appearances and love each other’s bodies and minds. Let’s eliminate the idea of opposites, and see ourselves as the one moving body striving for unity. So what can you do? If you are with a group of friends and they are expressing a lot of girl on girl hate, it’s as simple as suggesting to change the conversation, or exclude yourself or even better say something positive and uplifting about that person they’re talking about. Ultimately, you have the power to make a girl feel wanted, loved and empowered. So right now I would like to spread some girl love and compliment Rachel Ivres who I’ve only had the chance to get to know this year, she radiates such a warm and kind energy, and it certainly does not go unnoticed. She’s accommodating and allows people to be their most authentic self and I just think that’s wonderful. So in light of international women’s day, please don’t forget the power you hold to make change for yourself and all women. The small deeds you make really do amount to something. Know that you are so much more than your gender and be fearless about your passions because you are your own flaming goodness which no one can replace.”
Congratulations to everyone involved with the lunch. The baton now moves to Parramatta High School who will host the event in 2017. Christina Bennet Principal

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MR GRADY
Year 12 Exams Throughout Weeks 10 and 11, Year 12 students will be undertaking their Half Yearly examinations. These exams will provide an opportunity for students to sit a scaled down version of the HSC exam and practice the skills of preparation and time management, essential components of HSC success. I would like to wish all students every success throughout their exams. Year 10 students In Week 10, Year 10 students will receive their interim reports. These reports will provide feedback on behaviour, meeting deadlines, working to capacity and completion of classwork. Although these reports do not address all aspects of school life, they provide students and parents with a snapshot of progress, prior to the half yearly exams and formal reporting period in Term 2. Uniform I am pleased to report that the vast majority of our students always wear the school uniform with pride and according to our school policy. However, I would like to point out that black socks are not a part of our uniform on normal days or Sports days. If your child is wearing black socks, they will be given a lunch detention unless a note is brought from home. However, it is not an unreasonable expectation that students have white socks accessible. K Mart have been selling packs of 3 pairs for $2 for the past couple of years. I ask that parents support the school in this regard and challenge their child if they are wearing non uniform items when leaving the house. Parent and Student Contact throughout the day I would like to reaffirm a message from a previous newsletter, reminding parents not to ring students on their mobile devices throughout the day. After several incidents last week that had a negative effect on student learning and classroom engagement, it is timely to reiterate our school processes. If you need to contact your child throughout the day, parents and caregivers are to contact the front office and the school will inform your child or bring your child to the office to speak with you. If a child needs to speak with their parent, they are to come to the front office so this can be arranged. Students who use their phones are in breach of our school policy (see school website under “Our School” and “Rules and Policies”) will have their phone confiscated for the remainder of the day, to be collected at 3pm. As this will be the last major newsletter of the Term, I would like to wish all families a safe and enjoyable Easter/ Term 1 holiday.
Have a wonderful week, Mark Grady Deputy Principal

FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY Congratulations to the following Maths Merit Recipients:
Year 7 Year 8 Yr 12 Aleyna C Nicholas H x 2, Zoe R Garnya S x 2
This Week’s News Gifted and Talented: Year 10 Gifted and Talented Day 2016 Mrs Manson had the pleasure of taking six Year 10 students to Robert Townson High School for the Year 10 Gifted and Talented Day. Our students worked diligently on all tasks and were a credit to our school. They came fourth out of 24 schools. Year 7 World of Maths ‘World of Maths’ gives students the opportunity to work using hands on puzzles and activities in order to develop their problem solving skills. All students clearly enjoyed themselves on Thursday 24th March when engaging in these activities, with many positive comments from those involved. Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU PLUS II is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Different brands of scientific calculators have different layouts and it is important that everyone in a class has the same calculator. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions. Max Potential Media launch Three Year 11 students from our school were invited for the media launch of the Max Potential Program 2016. The media launch was held at the Castle Hill RSL on Wednesday 23rd of March. During the event, coaches and students connected for the first time and received the acknowledgment for their scholarships. Congratulations to our students Amelia K, Corinne K and Lachlan S.

FROM THE SCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE FACULTY
The Faculty has been very happy to announce the great success of Mrs Cole and her group of Agriculture students who represented MFHS at the Castle Hill Show. Be sure to read to the end of this article, because it’s quite a list of awards! (The picture to the right will give you a small indication of the performance of those students, animals and produce).
Faculty Merits The following students have received faculty merits for consistent achievement in Science:
Layla P. (Yr9)
Deborah B. (Yr10)
Katherine B. (Yr10)
Stephanie C. (Yr10)
James O. (Yr11)
Mrs Wawrzyniak’s entire Year 12 Biology class
Year 12 Biology Excursion On Friday the 18th of March the 2 Biology classes went on the annual excursion to the Museum of Human Disease at the University of NSW. It is listed as one of the world’s 10 weirdest museums, presenting 2000 examples of human disease. The museum is a fantastic learning resource for those interested in medicine and physiology. Unfortunately we were unable to take photos inside the museum, but perhaps that is for the best as things can get quite squeamish in there!
Science Group We in the Science Faculty are ecstatic to see so many students coming to Science Group. The numbers have reached a level that we have had to split the sessions into two groups: a Year 7 group and a Year 8 and above group. Both groups have completed a session and hopefully have had a lot of fun. The Year 8+ Group did a session on indicators, making “rainbow” measuring cylinders with some common household ingredients.

Both Mrs Manson and Ms Owen are hoping to organise a trip to Macquarie University’s Astronomy Open Night on Saturday the 14th of May from 6:30pm-10:00pm. Astronomer Fred Watson is giving a talk, and students will be given the opportunity to look through telescopes and go into the planetarium. More information about the evening can be found here: http://www.mq.edu.au/about/about-the-university/faculties-and-departments/faculty-of-science-and-engineering/departments-and-centres/department-of-physics-and-astronomy/association-for-astronomy/astronomy-open-night Mrs Manson and Ms Owen are going to be taking several students from school to the event, but parents are welcome to take their families on their own accord if they prefer. A few parents have also volunteered to take students from the school for those who are unable to make their own way to Macquarie University. For students after more information will need to see Mrs Manson or Ms Owen.
Castle Hill Show 2016 MODEL FARMS AGRICULTURE HAS SUCCESS AT THE SHOW
The Model Farms Agriculture students attended the 2016 Castle Hill Show. Model Farms kept up the tradition of entering the ‘Schools Display’ at the Show and this year our theme was Urban Agriculture, and the students designed a display which showcased the different ways that Sydney families can produce food in their urban backyard. Our display included aquaponics, chickens, raised bed gardens, vertical gardens, potted fruit trees, seedling nursery and composting. Our efforts were rewarded with the display winning ‘Students Choice Award’ as voted by the others schools in the competition and being awarded ‘Best Exhibit’ in the non-commercial section. Costa from ABC’s gardening Australia also visited the display and was extremely impressed by the concepts the students had presented. The students entered many competitions at the Show. Megan C. and Chelsea C. were awarded Junior Show Girl in Training and Senior Show Girl in Training respectively. This award was a credit to the girls and their commitment to agriculture both at School and in the Community. Model Farms Student’s where fantastic in the Junior Poultry Judging with Ashely P. winning First Place, Joshua P. winning second place and Liam M. winning third place. Patrick A. led the School’s Red Poll Cow in the Parade in a tough class with 30 other contestants.

The School’s ram won Grand Champion in the Sheepmeat section and as a Meatsheep Trio our sheep were awarded first place and the School’s ewe was placed second. The Sheepmeat judge praised the School on the quality of its animals and the Head Steward praised the students for their great conduct and professional animal handling. Students participated in a range of events and were recognized at the Show for both the quality of their livestock and their calm animal handling which was a credit to all students involved. The School also entered produce and were awarded with ribbons for poultry, eggs and vegetables in multiple classes. Well Done Ag Students!

FROM THE HSIE FACULTY
Senior Student Wins Fieldwork Award Abbey Wilkins, who is now in Year 11, will be presented a Highly Commended Award by the Geography Teachers Association of NSW for her Year 10 Geography fieldwork. The Award will be presented at the GTA Annual Conference in April. Abbey and her parents have been invited. This follows a second in the State result last year, in the first year of MFHS entering. Abbey did an excellent fieldwork report on Bella Vista as part of the tasks set in Year 10 Geography. Each year the four best of these are selected as entries and the success so far indicates the high standard of students own fieldwork being achieved. Abbey is to be congratulated for this.
Year 9 History have been “Fightin’ The Kaiser.” Actor-historian Brett Hunt performs to Year 9 History students studying the First World War. In the performance he takes the role of an Australian soldier recalling his experiences with his mates fighting the enemy. He tells tales of fighting at Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux and the harrowing sights and experiences encountered. Using props and playing music and telling jokes kept the students entertained while they learnt about the life of a soldier. At the conclusion of the performance, Brett took a number of insightful questions from the Year 9 audience. This was then followed by HSIE teacher, Steve Weingarth, who told the story of the Australian Flying Corps squadron, including his Uncle Jack, who flew fighter biplanes over the Western Front. This was to remind students of the 410 officers and support crews from Australia that were part of the success of the Allies in World War One. Quotes from Uncle’s letters home told students the story of missions over the front lines, being fired at from below, aircraft riddled with bullets and surviving to do it all again. A brief DVD on the AFC was also shown.

Disability Provisions Applications Disability provisions in the HSC are practical arrangements designed to help students who could
not otherwise make a fair attempt to show what they know in an exam room. Provisions apply
to students who have physical, intellectual, psychiatric, neurological, sensory as well as learning
difficulties.
The school should be aware if your child has learning difficulties but if you have been seeking
outside support from a medical or other professional, you should make contact with the school
if you intend to apply for provisions. The diagnosis of a disability does not ensure that provisions
will be granted for the HSC. Evidence need to be supplied to prove that provisions will actually
support your child in the examination room.
If your child intends to apply for disability provisions, you should make contact with the school
through the counsellor, year advisor, the appropriate deputy or with Mrs McKnight, Learning
and Support Teacher. Your child should approach Mrs McKnight in the Block 8 Support Room
who will supply the appropriate forms.

Year 7 It has been a wonderful start for Year 7 students, with many activities experienced so early on in the year. Students have had opportunities to form new friendships through the Big Fish into Little Fish program held in week 3 with Guest speaker Rocky Biasi.
We were further graced with two high profile Parramatta Eels players (Corey Norman and Cameron King) encouraging students to set goals and work hard to achieve them.
The Year 7 Camp took place in Week 6. Held at the Great Aussie Bush Camps, Tea Gardens, students immersed themselves in a wide raft of activities to push personal boundaries and build new relationships. There was no shortage of challenges, from walking the high ropes, archery, the flying fox, giant swing, and the infamous mud world challenge.
Year 7 are to be commended for the way they approached camp and the many activities that were part of it.
Special thanks are extended to the Year 11 Peer Support Leaders who supported and encouraged the Year 7’s throughout their camp experience. Teachers, Ms Dalton, Mr Maksimovic, Mr Stevenson, Miss Wood, Miss Owens, Miss Battistella, and Mr Barons who gladly facilitated such a memorable time.

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey I am delighted that this term, our school, like many others in the State, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 31 March and 8 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home in the next week with students that have been selected to participate. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the consent form to school by Wednesday 30th March. The FAQs and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are available from the website above.
