VOLUNTEER PROFILE - Madelaine Clarke, Berwickshire Wheels Volunteer Driver First full time job? A trainee laboratory technician, but I left after a year to join the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS) as a radar plotter, based in Portsmouth. In 1974 I became a nursing auxiliary, training as a registered nurse soon after and remained in the NHS until retiring in 2011. Did you choose the voluntary sector or did it choose you? Soon after retiring, in 2012, I applied to BAVS Berwickshire Wheels service as a volunteer driver. What's good about your job? I can do as little or as much driving as I want to suit other commitments I may have each week. Driving for Berwickshire Wheels makes me feel useful as I am helping the community by volunteering for this service. What's bad about your job? Nothing - other than not getting paid! Joking aside though, it is a shame that the Government leaves the driving of such a worthwhile community service to volunteers rather than paid staff. Services like Berwickshire Wheels should get more financial support. Is this a job for life? For as long as I am fit to drive. After this, I look forward to benefitting from the service myself as an end-user. A Heart for Duns and the People’s Millions A Heart for Duns (AHFD) is really excited to have won an award of £43,000 in the People’s Millions competition, following a public vote organised through ITV Border television on 26 November. Most of the funding will be used to improve the community theatre and cinema facilities in Duns Volunteer Hall. This will allow our partners, Duns and District Amateur Operatic Society and Duns Players, to present their superb shows in a more professional setting, and let AHFD itself host high- quality film nights and in time develop live streaming of performances from other venues. There is also money to underwrite some other activities and provide support for our events team. This will mesh with a recent grant from the Blackhill Windfarm Community Fund for events support, promotion and training. In addition to this, AHFD will soon receive a Feasibility Study and Business Plan, paid for by the Big Lottery. This will inform our decisions about the long-term future of the Volunteer Hall as a vibrant and flexible venue for all the people of Duns and Berwickshire. A Heart for Duns would like to thank everyone for their support in these recent initiatives, which strengthen the Volunteer Hall ahead of its 120 th anniversary in February. And if your organisation is considering a bid for the People’s Millions, we would be glad to offer help and advice.
