Individuals & Societies

One important aspect of the Individuals & Societies

programme is that students develop an understanding of their

place in the world and how many global issues are

interconnected.

Our first unit has focused on global inequalities and poverty.

Students have been studying issues such as; Maslow’s

hierarchy of needs, absolute/ relative poverty, GDP,

development, NGO and government data on poverty. The

students have, for the first time, been learning how to write

reports in academic format. Thus their final assessment will

be a report on global poverty.

UNIT 2:

Unit 2 is intended to help the students develop a more

objective stance on religion. Thus we will be examining a

variety of the world religions.

English Acquisition

The first Year 9 English unit this year has focused on looking at

how the news can be manipulated. In ‘Making or Faking the News’

students studied news stories, past and present, and examined

the use of language. They also learned important facts about the

use of bias in publication, and how slander and libel can lead to

court action for defamation of character.

For their final assessment students will produce a four-page

newspaper focusing on; sports, current affairs, politics and the

arts. Each student will be responsible for their own section.

UNIT 2:

Unit 2 will enable students to examine the history of songwriting

and they will be encouraged to use their language skills to produce

their own song lyrics.

Language&

Literature

Year 9 students have been busy in the first unit with their

projects including the social communities and their

languages, the survey about how people think differently,

and their reflections on delivering the survey. They also

produced their understanding how writers communicate

with readers through their works and how we can

understand writers’ intension in articles, which prepared

them for the summative assessment that they needed to

collect information from the survey and make conclusions

on why people think differently.

In unit 2, we will explore personality, value, belief and valuable life lessons in

personal histories’ articles. Students will inquire what character arc is and how to

write stories about their past.

MYP 3 Science! Mr. Phill

MYP 3 students have accelerated through a long trip down the road of physics during

unit

one! Through strong effort, teamwork and perseverance the

MYP 3 group has come to a speedy end of our unit on speed and

acceleration. Focusing on Communication as our approach

to learning,, we explored a new way to communicate using

graphs, tables, and text in combinations. Our start was slow,

we accelerated slowly at first also, over time, the

achievements, the growth of each student, and the increase in their confidence was

evident as we reached our speedy end! I feel confident that our MYP 3 students can

communicate well using tables, charts, diagrams, graphs of all

sorts, drawings and pictures

During unit two, the MYP3 students will explore why the motion

occurs. What are the causes of motion and what creates a change

in motion. We will also look at energy as it changes and how motion, force and energy

are all closely related. The concept of systems identification will play a vital role in

our studies of forces, energies and the interaction between the two. To achieve an

understanding of these relationships our students will need to be very organized,

principled, and neat with keeping their records. Confusion creates many mistakes, to

avoid this we will begin

slowly

understanding of the physics of motion and the causes of change

in motion will provide a base for future studies and can help

determine a students future course of action with their academics.

Mathematics

As Unit 1 draws to a close Year 9 students are busy applying what they have learned

about Proportional Reasoning to the task of making a model of the solar system,

carefully scaling everything to manageable proportions. It’s been a very productive

inquiry and it is fair to say students have learned a considerable amount about the

benefits of using a multiplicative strategy when changing proportions. The

construction of the solar system model will be the unit’s summative assessment and

will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their considerable

knowledge and understanding of proportional reasoning. Looking ahead towards the

middle of October 2018 we will commence our second unit of inquiry which will

focus on the very important area of Circles. Our inquiry is underpinned by the

importance of Circles as reflected in the variety of situations in which they are used

to model physical phenomena. We will be inquiring into this and asking among other

questions: why are Circles so important?

Design

The Year 9 class have been busy planning, sketching

and concepting their designs for the 3D toys and

models that they will create later in the year. They

have learned about the importance of scale, and

how the use of symmetry within model and toy

design can drastically simplify the design and

development process. They have developed a

portfolio of design images ready for the process of

turning these designs and concepts into 3D digital

models, and then later 3D printed toys.

They are a very artistic group of students as you

can see.

So congratulations to the students on all their hard work. They

have made a great start to the year, and begun the process of designing and

developing their own digital creations, from games and apps to 3D models. Keep up

REFLECTION OF THE PREVIOUS UNIT… Students have been working hard over the past 8 weeks exploring the theme of Biodiversity. Students used drawing techniques and skills

that taught them about composition and expression, to create their own art piece. They then added colour to their work by using a range

of different art mediums. The students used water colour paint, pastels, chalk pastels and water colour pencils. The students relished the

opportunity to use their own chosen art mediums. Their art work displays strong messages of how technology can help protect our

biodiversity. The students will now continue to use these skills during our next unit, whilst adding more in depth painting techniques and

skills.

Visual Art – Year 9

UNIT TITLE: Nature with a View

KEY CONCEPT: Aesthetics

RELATED CONCEPTS: Composition Expression

GLOBAL CONCEPT: Orientation in space and time

STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Many cultures consider balance and

harmony found in nature to be the

cornerstones of aesthetics.

‘Nature with a View’

For the next unit the students will focus on paintings of

nature settings. We will be exploring various types of

paintings and respond to them using artistic language.

We will view paintings from different cultures and

reflect on them using a compare and contrast theme.

We will be paying close attention to the balance and

harmony found in nature settings. We will also be

learning the techniques and skills of famous Paint

Artists.

From here the students will then create their own

nature scene providing evidence of the skills and

techniques that they have learnt about during the Unit.

This will be the students summative assessment task.

UNIT TITLE:

Chinese Traditional Music

KEY CONCEPT:

Change

RELATED CONCEPTS:

Narrative and interpretation

GLOBAL CONCEPT:

Time place and space

STATEMENT OF INQUIRY:

Empathy towards a historical period in time and space, conjures an interpretive narrative of nostalgia and change.

During the previous unit, Students have learned the origin and the story behind some musical instruments. They have made themselves more familiar with the sound, pitch, image and the ways on how to play their chosen musical instrument.

In unit 2, students will be learning the basic of pentatonic scales and the some example of pentatonic tunes frequently use in Chinese traditional melodies.

PE

MYP PE hs completed their first PE unit focusing on Dance. Students were

asked to research dance styles, decide on a style they wished to perform

and design a dance that included an illustrative diagram of their dance.

The unit proved to be an interesting challenge as students needed answer

questions as to why they had made the choices they had, including music,

tempo, and style. Additionally they needed to design their diagram in a

manner that made the steps clear to anyone who might wish to perform

their dance, never having seen it before.

For our physical activities we have concentrated on Balance, and on the

importance of ‘understanding how a game/sport/ works tactically, not

simply on ‘developing skills’.

Currently we are look at Healthy ways to relax when stressed [A useful

study skill] and learning the skills, tactics and rules of basketball.

Library Research

In the Library with MYP….

Our MYP students have been coming to the library for a lesson each week. These

students

have been learning all about how to research effectively online. Students have learnt

some

Boolean Logic techniques to ensure that they are finding the exact information that they

need. Students have also been learning how to create a ‘works cited’ (reference) page

for

their assignments. Each student will continue to work on these skills as the year

progresses. Our next focus will be around Cyber safety – keeping safe online.

Until the next newsletter, keep safe,
