Principal’s Report continued...

Assemblies The Thursday assemblies have started again with half of the school coming one week and the other the following. Student performances will start again, as those in attendance last week did not enjoy my tap dancing routine as much as I would have hoped. Nepal Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal after the devastating earthquake on the 25th April. More than 8000 people lost their lives, over double that were injured and many hundreds of thousands of people made homeless. Prep teacher Rosie, who travelled throughout Nepal last year, is running a fundraising lunch for the staff as a means of raising desperately needed funds for the Nepalese. Any parents wishing to add to the staff donation can do so on Friday at the office and we will send all the donations together. IBAC The IBAC (Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission) investigation into financial corruption in The Department of Education is currently underway. Back in the 1990’s the government moved to a model of autonomous schools (called Schools of the Future) where school funding was moved from a central system to individual schools. Schools were given an amount of cash based on enrolments so they could make local decisions about how to spend their money. This was separate to the staffing budget and we still have this system in place today. Certain schools were selected to be ‘banker schools’ by those high up in the finance division and money was placed into their school accounts to be held for region use. This was not a legitimate practice, and a department audit identified the risks involved and ruled the practice unlawful in 2010. Principals from ‘banker schools’ have been called to give evidence to the commission. There are a limited number of schools involved and Westgarth is not one. We have many internal controls in place to ensure sound financial management and our recent audits, which have been tabled at school council, confirm this. If you are interested in the details of the hearings you can read the transcripts which are publically available on the IBAC website. Year 4 Camp Information session to inform parents about the up and coming CYC camp at Philip Island will be held on Tuesday the 26th May, from 6 – 7pm in the library space in the WEB building. A staff member from CYC will be available to answer any questions parents have about the facilities etc. We look forward to

seeing year 4 parents on the night.

Mothers’ Day/Special Persons’ Day Stall Many thanks to the organisers and the helpers who provided goodies and assisted on the day. The children always enjoy the opportunity to choose a gift for someone special in their lives.

Mothers’ Day/Special Persons Day stall

Thank You! Thank you, thank you one and all who cooked, crafted, sorted and sold for the Special Persons Day stall on Friday. After a frenzied start up (thanks Lis, Marina and others who frantically checked and labelled cakes and other goodies as they came in the door on the morning) and a magnificent effort on the part of Marcel and Guy to establish order and routine to the division of goodies equally across classes, we soon hit our straps and sold, sold, sold. The kids loved it and we hope all you Mums and Special People enjoyed your goodies that were selected with enthusi-asm and care in equal measure! Its wonderful to see their eyes roving over the table and then light up as they spot something they think will be just the thing. For all of those lucky enough to receive some baked goods, we hope you enjoyed your treat. If you have any queries at all about the ingredients (or want the recipe), please contact us and quote the makers code attached to the packaging of your treat. Special thanks to Fiona and Kerry who crafted up a storm, and to Jac and Karen who spent a number of afternoons and evenings crafting away with us to provide items made by Westgarth Parents and Friends. If you have any queries, feedback or suggestions about this fundraising event, please feel free to contact either one of us. WPS Parents & Friends Makers Group. Following on from our modest success in making craft items for the Special Persons (Mothers) Day Stall last week, WPS Parents & Friends is looking to establish a makers group. We envisage it will be formed of enthusiastic people willing to contribute some time and effort towards making craft items to stock the Special Persons (both Mothers and Fathers Day) stalls. At this stage we plan to run up to four or five workshops during the year at which we will concentrate on producing bulk numbers of two or maybe three items per workshop, with the first being held sometime in June. All materials will be provided for each workshop. We may ask participants to bring equipment (eg sewing machines) if they have it/are willing, and depending on what we are proposing to make. We will always have at least one item that requires no equipment, so don’t let the equipment thing put you off! We also welcome involvement from our primary school (and older!) aged children, so if you’re looking for an activity to share, this may be a great candidate! Please be aware that no supervision is provided, so you will need to keep an eye on your own kids. Are you interested? If you’re keen, contact me on [email protected] or 0413 185 350, or Jessamy on [email protected] or 0411 825 315. We’ll also be running a Pinterest board on which we can post ideas for small items to make, either during a workshop, or for people to work on at home if you prefer to work that way. Details to follow.

More Jammy cook-up fun 17th May So here we are in Term 2, with the craziness of tomato season behind us and a couple of hundred jars of chutney and kasundi safely tucked away in Trudy’s garage. And so it’s time to turn our attention to pears and apples and whatever else is looking good on the trees and in the shops. So if you haven’t yet come along to a jammy 'chop and chat' cook-up session, then what better time to leap in than now? Sunday 17th May 9.30am - 12.30pm at the Farmhouse on the Clarke St campus BYO apron and knives, and some morning tea snacks to share If you’re planning to come, please RSVP to Anne on 0417 114 088 or [email protected] so that we know to contact you if plans change. Or if you can’t come but would like to join our email list, then please get in touch. And please keep those jars coming, particularly small and medium sized ones. Drop off to the trolley at reception. Thanks. Hope to see you there! Anne Martinelli M: 0417 114 088
