Dear Parents and Caregivers,
New Receptions Visit Our School A very warm welcome to our new reception students and their families. We will have 53 new reception students beginning their educational journey with us in 2018. Wednesday saw the first day of their transition days at Blackwood Primary School. It was lovely to see so many eager and excited little ones keen to begin school. By all reports they had a wonderful time getting to know their new teachers and new friends.
We are all very proud of the maturity and bravery displayed by our current students, Bella, Lexi, Harrison, Reuben, Saksham, Bahar, Amy, Tim and Marshall who greeted our new students and their families upon arrival. A great job, well done!
We look forward to getting to know our new families and working closely with them in the near future.
Volunteers Morning Tea
On Tuesday we held a special morning tea to thank all our wonderful volunteers in our school. Over 50 people attended, sharing in a wide variety of delicacies provided by our staff. The list of volunteers and their roles in the school is amazing. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our school. Your efforts are truly making a difference in the success of our school.
Thank you Thank you to our wonderful school community who have supported us at two recent events; Bluearth Sports Day and the Colour Run. Both of these events were highly successful and you can read more about each of these later in our newsletter.

Blackwood Christmas Rotary Fair Thank you to all the parents that supported our cake and coffee stall at the Blackwood Rotary Fair on Sunday. Your donations of cakes, slices and homemade biscuits helped make the day a huge success. A big thank you to our Parents and Friends Committee who organised the stall and to all the wonderful helpers who supported on the day. A great community event! Thank you everyone.
2017 Blackwood Christmas Pageant The Blackwood Pageant is our last event of the 2017 calendar. This year we are Float 10 close to the front of the procession. Please consider being involved in this event. It is a great way to celebrate the end of the year and be an active part of the school and Blackwood Community. Please return the note sent home by the Wednesday the 29th of November.
Room 3 Assembly On Friday of Week 5 Room 3 hosted the Primary Assembly. It was a very busy assembly with exciting performances of ‘Rocket Sam’ from Big Sing and ‘When I Grow Up’ from Mixed Berries. While everybody performed really well, soloists Nicholas, Sebastian, Flynn, Dorothy, Marshall and Riley did a wonderful job singing for Big Sing and Nathan, Chrishanya, Max, Sabine, Ruby and Michelle sang beautifully for Mixed Berries. Ruby and Michelle did an exceptional job of singing even after the music cut out due to technical difficulties – they blew everyone in the audience away with their professionalism and talent. The rest of the assembly was filled with a look back at all the learning throughout the year with Room 3’s Little Big Learners. Hosts Sabine and Tom interviewed little big learners Mae, Jacob, Wamui and Aimee who took us through a showcase of all the talents and work that Room 3 has produced throughout the year including recorder playing, PE stunts, weather reports in Japanese, poetry, posters, a TV ad skit, a song written and performed by members of the class and a reflection on the traditions and volunteering achievements of families in our class. To top off an action packed assembly Mr. Garner, James and Sensei Sakumoto presented awards for achievements in learning, Children’s University and the hirigana competition. Everyone did a fantastic job on the day including our technical support from Aastha and Marci who managed to fix our faulty technology several times. Well done everyone!

Undoukai – Japanese Sports Day. Japanese Sports Day is held biannually at Blackwood Primary School. This year Undoukai was held on November 7th. We were lucky with the weather.
We began the day with year 3-7 students meeting in the hall for an assembly starting with the Japanese national anthem. Satomura sensei organised year 7 students to announce video clips of events in Japan and our own students demonstrating balancing activities taught by Mrs Fuller in PE lessons.
Beginning with ‘rajio taiso’ (radio exercises), the events are a combination of traditional Japanese sports day activities, such as ‘balls in the basket’ (tame ire) and ‘pole races’ (taifu no me) and the summer festival activity ‘balloon and fish fishing’ ( yoyotsuri). Other activities were ‘bottle relay’ and a ‘dressup relay’ in which students had to tie a hachimaki around their head, put on a happi jacket and wear geta (Japanese wooden ‘thongs’).
The sports day gives our students a chance to use the language in context and to experience a different culture through physical activity as well as having fun.
しろ ぐみ かった おめだとう。This year the white team won.
Statewide Hiragana Competition
(Left) Congratulations to the Ramen Ninjas (aka Ayesha, Amelia, Veniss and Aastha) who made it through to the semi-finals of the Statewide Hiragana Competition held on November 20 at the EDC in Hindmarsh.

The Bluearth Day will be remembered by everyone as it was postponed a day because of rain then held a day later in more rain! All students seemed to enjoy the fact that we were still able to play in the rain. The day was won by Fraser. Some reflections by the students about Bluearth Day were: • People were supportive and a good sport, people
supported other teams , everyone cheered even for the
people coming last, everyone got to participate
• Enjoyed playing Storm the Castle because it was
challenging playing in a limited space
Blackwood Primary School Term 4 Week 6 Page8
• Barry is a great game because even if you don’t get to hold the ball you can still play a part by
stopping the other team, it was fair and fun
• We all tried our best
• Everyone was happy because it was fun

Results of the Poll for 2018 Material & Services Charges After the Governing Council meeting dated 31st October 2017, all our families were posted information and voting slips about making the 2018 Materials & Services Charge legally recoverable. Thank you to the many families/caregivers who returned their votes, the response was one of our highest ever. The result was overwhelmingly (93%) in favour of making our Materials & Services charge of $365 for 2018 fully legally recoverable. Invoices for 2018 will be issued early next year.

Parents & Friends Committee Well its nearly the end of the school year and P&F events are coming to an end. We’ve had lots of fun with our events this year and we hope to continue into the new 2018 school year. The success of our events is thanks to the students and their families of our school community. We couldn’t have done it without your help! Parents & Friends are excited to announce that our TOTAL fundraising achievement for this year is approx. $20,000 and we’d like to thank everyone for all the support in achieving this great outcome. The money is being used to finish the final stage of the redevelopment ‘Parkour’ Playground which our students can enjoy for many years to come, so watch this space for updates! But for now, here are some of the things that P&F have been doing to achieve our goal……
CUA Colour FUN RUN What an amazing day we all had at the Blackwood Primary School CUA School Fun-Run!
