August Meeting

The August meeting was held on the 8th. The entertainment was a video that Tom Teek taped of Roy Blaha talking about the Windows for Remy project on national television.

Johnny Murphy and Charlie Gray gave brief presentations of their trips to Oshkosh this year. John said that he rode to Oshkosh in a Citation, and that it was very nice. Charlie went in an Aerocomp. He reported that there seemed to be about 50% less air traffic at Oshkosh this year, partly because of the weather. Charlie is building an Europa, and said that a new Europa motor glider wing is being introduced that has 5 feet more of span that the old motor glader has. He is looking into the possibility of self-certification on the new version.

Palmer Stiles reported that he is purchasing an English wheel for forming aluminum. He said he would allow chapter members to use the tool for

NIFA is made up of flight teams from universities and colleges around the country. Teams are composed of college students who are interestedin aviation. Each year, students compete in regional and national level Safety Conferences (SAFECON). Students from colleges in the southeast USwill be competing in the event at Melbourne.

Competitions require judges and that's where you come into the picture. If you can help judge any or all of these events, please contact Bobbi Lasher (321-636-5346 or e-mail [email protected]) or Donna Wilt (321-674-8120 or [email protected]). __________________________________________

News from AOPAAOPA ePilot, August 18, 2000BOEING BUYS JEPPESEN

In an effort to continue the expansion of its services business, The Boeing Company announced Tuesday that it's acquiring Jeppesen Sanderson from the Tribune Company for $1.5 billion in cash. Boeing intends to operate Jepp as a wholly owned subsidiary and to keep the current management team in place. Regulatory approval is pending. "We've made it clear that we are transforming Boeing into a global aerospace solutions provider, and growing our aviation services business is a major part of that transformation," Boeing Chairman and CEO Phil Condit said. For more information, see the Web site ( http://www.jeppesen.com ).

AOPA URGES FAA TO INSTALL ONLINE 'WEATHER CAMS'

AOPA is urging the FAA to use the power of the Internet to provide better weather information to pilots. AOPA wants the FAA to install Internet-accessible cameras to provide real-time weather images to supplement automated ASOS/AWOS reports. In a letter to the FAA's Aviation Weather

Directorate, Dennis Roberts, AOPA vice president and executive director of the Government and Technical Affairs Division, said, "Video-imaging technology is an inexpensive and effective medium for giving pilots critical weather information." The idea has been successfully tested in Alaska, where video cameras have been placed at airports and remote locations. The cameras are aimed to provide the most relevant weather views for VFR pilots. The views permit pilots to identify distant weather phenomena and make better "go/no-go" decisions. AOPA firmly supports this inexpensive technology to enhance weather observations and increase general aviation safety," Roberts said. "We ask the FAA to examine the results of the Alaska project and expand this program to the lower 48 states."__________________________________________

ElectionsTime to start thinking about next year’s

Chapter officers. Elections must be held in November in order to get the new officers’ names in to Headquarters by early December.

Newsletter Editor Needed Before January!Your newsletter editor is resigning effective

at the end of the year, and a replacement is needed. I’ve been editor this time for five years, and have edited the newsletter for over a third of the chapter’s existence. Other commitments – a big one being the time demands of building an airplane – require me to step down. Some writing skills are necessary. Gregariousnesss is a plus – the desire to talk to other builders and report on their projects – as would be having no aircraft project of your own in work.. Being retired may be a plus, supposedly allowing one more time for leisure pursuits. Computer skills are a plus for composing the newsletter, as well as distributing the 50 or so electronic copies the chapter sends out each month. Ted Yon has been taking care of distributing paper newsletter copies. Please consider taking over this job. Someone must be in place by the first of the year, because I just can’t do it any more. Contact one of the officers or the newsletter editor if you are interested. Telephone numbers are on the masthead. The sooner you can get started, the more help I can give you during the last months of the year.

5Smilin’ Jack

Don’t forget, September 16th is EAA Chapter 866’s Annual Smilin’ Jack Fly-In at Dunn Airport in Titusville. Don’t miss it!__________________________________________

Humor – Avweb “Short Final”Submitted by Ted Yon

Recently my three-year-old son and I went to ride with a friend in our 182 while he practiced his landings. After seven or eight landings we decided to make a full stop and get a bite to eat at the airport diner.

Over dinner my son asked, "Why were we Taking off and landing so many times?"

I replied, "John was practicing his landings."My son then inquired, "Why was he

practicing BUMPY landings?"

While aboard AA 1157 from BUF to ORD, a woman sitting next to a loyal AVweb reader had the following conversation with the flight attendant:

Passenger: "Are we in a holding pattern?"Flight Attendant: (Turns around and looks

out the window) "No, we're still moving."

Chapter Web SiteFor those of you that co-exist with home

computers, don’t forget that chapter member Ron Cadby provides us with server space for an EAA Chapter 724 Web Page. The site address is on this newsletter’s masthead. Check it out!__________________________________________
