…and YKIP’s first step to give back impoverished children in Pengotan Village the opportunity to study despite any

financial difficulties began with 35 children. Pengotan Village of Bangli regency is the fifth district that has received

YKIP’s support in ensuring the underprivileged children have a chance to continue their education.

Bangli region has one of the highest rates of children dropping out from school before they complete their mandatory 12-year studies. Many of the villagers live below the poverty line; one of the reasons why many children exchange their formal schooling with family trade apprenticeship to help put food on the table.

By working together with the village credit institution (locally known as LPD) and the village officials, YKIP creates an account for each scholarship child and sets up a system to ensure the allocated money is used for its intended purpose.

“To withdraw money, the student will need to have the school’s confirmation that the money withdrawn would be used for school-related activities,” explained YKIP Operation Director Dian Assiddika.

Despite utilizing this method for the first time in lieu of giving out cash as is the norm for the other 4 regencies and 1 municipality in Bali, YKIP is confident that it will go smoothly and provide a more transparent system regarding the allocated donations. A big part of this is thanks to the Pengotan LPD’s prior experience in handling similar scholarship arrangement for Udayana University that has been ongoing in the region for several years now

Every Journey Begins with a Single Step…

The first distribution event in Pengotan Village was hosted and fully supported by the Baliwoso campsite. In this occasion, Ayu Ratna the KEMBALI Program Coordinator from YKIP took the opportunity to explain the scholarship in detail, including what support YKIP provides, how, and who to contact in case of emergency.

One by one, the children came forward to receive their first YKIP care package, which was accepted with mixed emotions –happiness, awe, and relief were chief among them.

YKIP, working together with the village community

leaders and LPD, plans to promote the awareness of

education and its importance to Pengotan villagers.

“Eradicating ignorance about the importance of

education is the first step to attack the root of

Pengotan’s low education level,” said Dian.

Her ambition is shared by a number of interested

members of the Pengotan village, particularly by two

village community leaders, Pak Nyarka and I Ketut

Suarno (a.k.a Nang Gatot).

“The high rates of school dropouts, early marriages,

and unemployment in this region are interrelated

issues, stemming from and in turn promoting lack of

proper education. YKIP is not alone in our endeavor.

We have the support of the village community

leaders, the LPD, and the schools in Pengotan Village

who will serve as points of contact and enforcer of

the idea that education is important,” explained Dian.

Constant reinforcement, approachable points of

contact, as well as valid encouragement are needed

to spread the awareness of how important education

is among the Pengotan villagers.

Working hand in hand with all relevant stakeholders

who are passionate to elevate the villagers’ living

standard through education, YKIP strives forward to

break the chain of poverty in Pengotan Village

through education.

“Knowing yourself is the foundation of writing,” was the first fundamental elements of writing that the professional author Sifra Susi Langi imparted to her rapt audience in the creative writing workshop held on behalf of Yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi (YKIP).

Writing is a form of self-expression that is often misjudged. Often we hear people shy away from writing, citing that “it’s too difficult” or “I can’t write.” According to Susi, that is nowhere near true.

“There is no such thing as bad writing,” she declared early in her presentation. “Every writing is beautiful.”

That was less of an encouragement and more a statement. Everyone can write and she was here to make sure that we, the participants, can write not only beautifully but also meaningfully.

The problem in writing is not in the lack of skill but in the inflexible ‘knowledge’ that one could not do it. This ‘knowledge’, or lack thereof, was what Susi was aiming to fix by instilling confidence in each of the twenty-two participants that attended her full day workshop.

She did it not by imparting cold, hard writing techniques, but rather by sharing her considerable knowledge and experience in the creative writing process.

Writing is simply a verbal speech given form in printed media. If one could speak, one could write. This is where the ‘knowing yourself part’ comes into play. Your writing reflects you, according to our instructor. By knowing who you are, you can position yourself better as a writer and create a compelling content that people can relate to.

Susi shared with us many important aspects of creative writing that day, many of which revolved around how to search, churn, and compile ideas into a digestible piece that would not only inform but also inspire readers to commit to the cause we write about.

“Inspiration is everywhere,” was another important point that she made. “When your muse comes a-knocking, don’t bother with anything else and jot down the idea before it’s gone.”

Can’t Write? Change Not the Lack of Skill but Confidence

She suggested discarding all the preconception of writing that we have instilled by our language lessons. Those, according to her, would only hinder our creative writing process. Our untrained thoughts are unstructured, so Susi taught us how to process idea into inspiration into motivation and finally into an organized and attractive writing.

We received various methods to express our thoughts backed with facts and a couple of exercises to immerse ourselves in all the process that she had taught us. The practical session at the end involved reading and evaluating our work, written with the methods just taught – that made for a very interesting session where our work was reviewed and discussed.

Looking about the room, I observed an interesting mix of background among the participants – university students, corporate workers, NGOs personnel, and several volunteers.

It is no wonder then that our motivations also varied – some came out of genuine love for writing, some wanted the experience, some were preparing for university level competitions, etc. One thing everyone shared in common was our bolstered confidence in our writing by the end of the session.

Empowered by the workshop, emboldened by the tips imparted to us by Susi, each of us is now ready to strike out as an agent of change for the cause we believe in.

YKIP organized the Creative Writing Workshop on September 16, 2017 with the aim of recruiting volunteer authors who can later help YKIP in promoting its programs. Amongst the participants were a number of alumni, NGO’s personnel from Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan (YPK) and current recipients of the YKIP scholarship.

UPCOMING EVENT: YOUTH CAREER PLANNING WORKSHOP 2017

Mitrais Office, Bali 17th December 2017

YKIP is extremely grateful for all of the support that the Inspirasia Foundation and Mitrais have given so we are able to deliver educational assistance to

disadvantaged children.

The Inspirasia Foundation is a philanthropy portfolio making investments in health & education projects with a high potential for growth, helping some of the most marginalized social groups in India, Indonesia, and Thailand, including the disabled, poor young women, and unschooled children. We believe in the power of “What IF.”

The Inspirasia Foundation, establish-ed as the Annika Linden Foundation in 2003, was formed as a positive response to the tragic 2002 Bali terror bombing in Kuta, and as a memorial to the spirit of the more than 200 innocent victims of that bomb, among them young Annika Linden. Today, the Inspirasia Foundation supports 13 partners across Asia, including in Bali.

2017 sees Mitrais entering its 15th year of involvement in supporting YKIP activities. Mitrais’ involvement started in 2002 when Mitrais’ staff were involved in the Bali Bombings relief action, their support has continued through today and includes the provision of office space, accounting, IT, and internet support, as well as other volunteer services. Senior Mitrais employees are on the YKIP management board, cementing an already close bond between the two organizations.
