Term 4 - Issue 16
On Tuesday the 15th of October Miss Bennett’s year 1 class took a short bus trip down to the Victor Harbor Information Centre. The centre was celebrating its 25th year anniversary and we were lucky enough to be part of their celebration. We performed to the song ‘In a house’ by Rachel de Azevedo Coleman. We sang to the music and also signed many of the lyrics. The song has been an important part of our learning about different ways that people communicate. On our visit we met local Aboriginal artist, Allan Sumner. As part of the launch of the Visitor Centre wall art project, we were then shown a blank wall on the outside of the building, and asked to imagine what could be painted on it. Back at school we each thought about what makes Victor Harbor special to us and those that come to visit. We then drew our own designs of what could be included, to be handed in to the Centre as part of their consultation with people in our community.

CHLOE’S CURLS FOR CANCER
Hi, my name is Chloe Byrne. I hope to donate my ponytail to make wigs for women who have lost their hair from cancer. I have a wish to get lots of students and adults to donate their hair as well. It would be great if you could get involved. Ponytails must be 30cm long Hair must be completely natural and be free of any dye or colour. I hope to organise lots of ponytails to be cut at the school later on in the year, so you have time to grow your hair some more!!! If you are interested you can come and talk to me at school, I’m in Mr Staak’s year 6 class or your parents can talk to my mum or Maureen. All money raised from our ponytails will be donated to the Neurosurgical Research Foundation. The Neurosurgical Research Foundation (NRF) carries out research on the brain and spinal cord. NRF tries to find new treatments and cures for cancer, strokes, and traumatic brain injuries along with many other things. A lot of this research is based in Adelaide. For further information please see me, Chloe Byrne or Maureen Moores at school or you can ring my mum Brenda on 8552 6797 or 0420 783115

S.A. is running a program called ‘Dads Read’. It was developed following recent research that highlights the importance of dads reading to their children during their early developmental years, before they start school.
Research confirms reading to children just 10 minutes each day strengthens literacy, models positive behaviour, and builds children's self-esteem about reading (especially for boys). ‘Dads Read’ encourages fathers to invest in your child's future by choosing to read to them each day.
Why is reading together important?
Reading together:
models positive reading behaviour prepares your child to learn to read helps them to develop a love of reading introduces your child to written language opens up new worlds for your child’s imagination and understanding develops reading mileage – the more time spent reading the more reading improves improves your child’s language and listening skills builds social skills and family bonds
1. Read aloud every day
10 minutes of reading aloud every day makes an important difference to your child’s language and literacy development.
3. Talk, play and tell stories to your children
Tell your child stories every day about your day, their family, exciting things you’ve seen or done. Reading, storytelling, talking and play helps your child listen and develop social and language skills.
2. Read anywhere
Read in a variety of places to your child. Read outdoors – in the park, at the beach and on the bus. Just like adults, children enjoy reading in different contexts and times of the day.
4. Read anything!
Storybooks and picture books stimulate imaginations and foster a love of literature. But read recipes, newspapers, brochures, maps and other texts to support your child’s literacy levels in all aspects of their life.
5. Make reading fun
Read stories with enthusiasm! Change voices for different characters and alter the volume of your voice to build excitement.
Stay tuned for the next newsletter for 5 more top tips to help your child’s reading!
