By#Beth#Jaekle#and#Merrianne#Leff##Members#of#numerous#faith#groups#in#Greensboro,#mental#health#providers,#family#members#and#individuals#with#mental#illness,#and#interested#citizens#met#together#at#an#innovative#and#encouraging#Behavioral#Health#Faith#Summit#for#a#valuable#day#of#dialogue#and#education#on#April#16th.#Greensboro#College#hosted#the#event.##Professionals#and#clerics#made#contacts#and#learned#of#additional#ways#to#serve#the#mentally#ill#in#this#city.##Various#clergy,#health#and#mental#health#professionals#planned#the#program#with#the#help#of#consultants#and#academics.#####The#program#included#opening#remarks#from#various#leaders#in#the#health#and#faith#communities,#a#totally#spellbinding#keynote#speaker#(Kevin#HinesEE#see#the#review#of#his#book#on#page#2)#and#a#panel#presentation#featuring#two#psychiatrists—Dr.#Carey#Cottle,#a#Christian,#and#a#psychiatrist#and#Dr.#Jerry#Plovsky,#a#Jew#and#a#psychiatrist;#Fred#May,#LPC,#a#Christian,#Licensed#Professional#Counselor;#and##Eric#Gladney,#who#is#both#a#Church#Pastor#and#a#corporate#and#educational#strategist#at#NC#A&T#University.###The#panel#directly#addressed#the#topic#of#the#tension#and#similarities#and#differences#between#the#faith#and#the#professional#mental#health#communities#when#dealing#with#behavioral#health.###These#speakers#were#able#to#delineate#situations#when#traditional#behavioral#health#treatment#and#care#is#needed#versus#the#time#for#religious#belief#and#prayer#alone.##They#also#explained#for#those#desiring#it,#how#Christian#providers#can#provide#understanding#of#those#religious#beliefs#while#identifying#the#need#for#traditional#psychiatric#care.##Attendees#could#then#choose#to#attend#one#of#nine#morning#and#one#of#eight#afternoon#Workshops.##Those#options#covered#a#huge#array#of##topics#from#policy#to#spirituality,#loss#and#grief,#suicide#prevention,#chaplains,#domestic#violence,#children,#adolescents#and#schools,#and#many#more#subjects.###There#were#panelists#and#moderators#at#each#of#those#workshops.##Jack#Glenn#was#involved#in#some#of#the#Summit#planning#and#was#one#

Dreams$do$come$true!$#My#name#is#Ronald#and#I#am#a#former#patient#of#Dorothea#Dix#Hospital.#I#was#in#the#Hospital#for#14#years.##As#I#was#walking#around#the#Hospital#during#the#NAMI#Walk#I#had#many#memories#of#the#time#I#spent#in#the#Hospital.#It#was#so#emotional#to#remember#the#hopes#and#dreams#that#I#had#while#I#was#there.#I#wanted#to#one#day#live#back#in#the#community.##I#am#very#proud#to#say#that#my#dreams#have#come#true.#I#have#lived#in#the#community#successfully#for#21#years#now.#I#have#a#job#and#have#reEconnected#with#my#brother.##So#yes....dreams#do#come#true!

Mitch#McGee,#who#has#worked#as#a#case#manager#dealing#with#housing#issues#spoke#at#the#NAMI#Guilford#Educational#meeting#to#provide#information#and#answer#questions.##He#also#provided#handouts#spelling#out#in#detail#the#various#programs.##Among#the#topics#discussed:##

1. Mitch#wanted#to#be#sure#that#everyone#was#aware#that#at#present,#the#Section#8#waiting#list#and#public#housing#waiting#lists#in#Greensboro#are#open.##To#apply#to#get#on#the#wait#lists#you#simply#need#to#apply#on#line#from#their#website#for#the#Greensboro#Housing#Authority.##The#High#Point#Housing#Authority#Section#8#wait#list#is#presently#closed.##Mitch#also#gave#some#information#on#the#various#Section#8#programs,#such#as#Shelter#plus#care.#

2. In#addition#to#programs#operated#by#the#local#housing#authorities,#one#program#that#can#be#very#helpful#is#the#“Targeted/Key#Program”#–#which#is#operated#by#the#state#DHHS.##Rents#are#also#subsidized.#The#requirements#include#for#a#person#to#be#referred,#they#must#have#a#“disability#source#of#income”#(SSI,#SSDI,#veteran’s#benefit’s,#etc.)#and#be#enrolled#in#a#case#management#agency#that#has#been#approved#to#be#a#referral#agency.#

3. Mitch#also#provided#a#listing#of#various#“project#based#rental#assistance”#properties#that#are#in#the#county#along#with#contact#information#and#eligibility#requirements.#

4. A#list#of#websites#that#can#be#helpful#in#the#search#for#an#apartment,#such#as#www.socialserve.com,#which#has#a#long#listing#and#can#help#you#find#a#landlord#that#takes#Section#8#or housing#options#that#do#not#require#a#background#check.#

Information#that#can#be#helpful#for#people#who#have#a#difficult#time#finding#an#apartment#due#to#criminal#history#or#bad#credit#is#the#“reasonable#accommodation”#rules#in#terms#of#fair#housing#in#the#state#of#North#Carolina.##For#instance:#say#a#person#has#a#bad#credit#history#and#you#can#relate#it#to#the#person’s#disability.#For#example#they#have#BiEpolar#Disorder#and#previously#were#not#in#treatment,#had#a#manic#episode#and#ran#up#huge#credit#card#debt.##Some#time#has#passed;#the#person#is#now#in#recovery.#But#a#bad#credit#history#has#made#finding#an#apartment#a#challenging.##You#can#ask#for#a#“reasonable”#accommodation#because#the#obstacle#is#related#to#their#disability,#and#due#to#their#recovery,#there#is#a#reasonable#expectation#that#they#would#not#experience#this#problem#again.##Information#was#provided#on#how#to#work#through#that#process.##One#thing#to#be#aware,#you#will#have#to#let#the#landlord#know#what#your#disability#is,#so#some#privacy#is#lost.##A#listing#of#group#homes#in#Guilford#County#was#also#provided.##A#discussion#followed#on#how#to#research#group#homes,#the#rules#in#terms#of#Medicaid#assistance#and#the#importance#of#visiting#homes#prior#to#placement.##Not#every#home#would#be#a#“match”#for#every#person’s#“needs”.##There#appeared#to#be#a#great#deal#of#interest#in#the#subject#of#“housing”#–#due#to#the#many#questions#and#lively#discussion#that#occurred#during#the#evening.##If#you#have#questions#that#need#to#be#answered#on#this#topic,#please#email#Mitch#at#mitchormax@aol.com####

There#is#now#formal#agreement#for#the#State#of#NC#to#sell#the# Dorothea# Dix# State# Hospital# property# of# over# 300#acres# to# the# city# of# Raleigh.# # However,# Raleigh# is# still#working#out#their#payment#arrangements.# # #The#plan#for#the# use# of# the# funds# to# be# paid# to# the# State# of#NC# per# a#NAMI#summary#in#a#“Heard#in#the#Halls”#email#on#May#22,#2015,#provides#the#following:#

EEAll#52#million#from#the#sale#will#be#put# into#the#Mental#Health#Trust# Fund#and# can#only# be# spent#with#approval#from# the# General# Assembly# for# services# for# people#with#mental#illness.#

EE#25#million#from#the#Dix#sale#will#be#used#to#fund#a#pilot#that#will#convert#unused#hospital#beds#into#psychiatric#hospital#beds#for#short#term#care#in#rural#hospitals.#The#Dix#money#will#be#used#as#"seed"#money#to#help#with#infrastructure#and#oneEtime#costs#associated#with#transforming#their#medical#beds#into#psychiatric#beds.#The#hospital#will#be#responsible#for#sustaining#the#project#through#their#funds#and#reimbursements#for#services.#
