Book Week Our students are looking forward to dressing up for the book week parade tomorrow 20

th

August. They can wear their costume to school and are encouraged to bring along the book which

their character represents. You are invited to come and watch your child/children in the parade with us. The parade will be held un-der the top COLA at 10:30am. This year’s theme “Connect to Reading” is proving popular and students are bringing in photos of them-selves connecting with reading in a variety of ways. Keep the photos coming in. This shows students different ways of connecting to books and reading. Below are some of the shortlisted books for 2014. Enjoy this wonderful way to connect with your child while reading. Keep an eye out in next week’s newsletter for photos.

Buddy Reading Students in Years 1 and 2, and Year 5 and 6, have been enjoying participat-ing in our Buddy Reading Program this year. The program involves the Year 5 and 6 students assisting their buddies in Year 1 and Year 2 with their reading skills on Wednesday and Friday mornings. The students participate in a variety of activities to help further develop their reading skills. I like Buddy Reading because I get to pass on my knowledge to Year 1 and Year 2 students. Lucy Jefferis I really like how the Year 1 and Year 2 students get better and better at reading. The little buddies are just so good. Teleah I like Buddy Reading because I like to help them and teach them to read. It’s lots of fun. Alyssa Veneris I like helping the Year 1s and Year 2s learn to read but most of all I like to help out. Ebony Sandland I like playing word games and I like reading with my buddy. Aiden Craig I read lots of books with my buddy and we practise the words I get wrong. Jazz McCarthy

NSW School Band Festival Last weekend, The KPS concert band travelled to Sydney for the NSW School Band Festival. The weekend started with an early wake up on Saturday morning, 16

th August. All of the members of

the Concert Band met at school and jumped on the bus at 7:30am. After stop offs at Yass and Mittagong we finally made it to Sydney and headed straight to the Sydney Aquarium. Students had a wonderful time exploring the Aquarium. They particularly liked the under water tunnel, where you can see sharks swimming right above you! We then battled the crowds around Darling Harbour and walked to the playground near the Imax. Students had a great time climbing a huge jungle gym, playing on giant swings and zipping along the flying fox. When it started raining we dashed back to the bus and headed to our accommodation. We weren’t at the hotel for long before we went back out again. We huddled under

umbrellas and walked back to Darling Harbour for dinner. We braved the rain and stayed out to watch the fantastic fireworks. It was then time to go back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep.

On Sunday we were up early again. The students got dressed into their lovely performance uniforms, had breakfast and then jumped straight onto the bus. We enjoyed a quick sight seeing trip around Sydney, including a drive over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a stop off at Mrs Macquarie’s chair for a photo opportunity. Then we went to UNSW where the festival was held. We were not at the festival for long before students went to the warm up room to prepare for their performance. The KPS Concert Band performed 7

th in a section of 10 bands. They did a

wonderful job performing Paso Flamanco and May it Be. The

band then had a group photo and waited to hear the result from the adjudicator. We were very excited to hear we won a Silver Award and a Band Development Grant, which will involve a tutor coming from Sydney to work with our band.

We then jumped back onto the bus and started the long trip home. After a couple of stop offs, the exhausted band members arrived back to school at 7:00pm.

Thank you to Mr Craig Walton for your excellent conducting and wonderful effort in preparing the band for this trip. Also, a big thank you to all the parents who came on the trip and made this exciting experience possible!

5/6K Investigate QR codes This term 5/6K have been investigating QR (Quick

Response) codes and have learnt how to make

them. They’re basically a two-dimensional barcode

that can be read using smartphones, tablets, laptops

and dedicated QR reading devices. We have used

them to record information about Pablo Picasso

on our cubist artwork, create extension maths word

problems and link our You Tube

Lego animation to posters in our

room. To see one of our Technology Team’s Lego animations, simply

download a free QR scanner and scan the code below. Lego Animation

P&C NEWS

RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTY POSTS A big thank you to the parents who helped with the installation of the new footy posts. It is great to see so many students getting enjoyment from this new equipment. A special thanks to Jason Toff Bobcat for excavating the footing holes, Chasweld for pouring the footings and Blue Hinds for supplying equipment for the installation. Last years fun run fundraising contributed to these new posts. The P&C will now start researching the purchase and installation of new posts for other football codes.

NEXT MEETING TONIGHT ! Tuesday 19 August Come along to tonights meeting, held in the Staff Room at 7.30pm, Tuesday 19 August. We would love to see you there. ONGOING FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES KPS P&C is an active committee within the school community who raise funds for resources for stu-dents & staff of KPS. We would encourage par-ents/carers to become involved as without your generous support many fundraising events will not be possible. Other ways of supporting the P & C on an ongoing basis include:

· Canteen · Uniform Shop · Bakers Delight “Dough Raiser Program”

· Hume Bank - school banking facilities.
