Free Life Insurance Program Insert
August 2013
The children will be re-turning to school in the next few days and I hope each family had
an enjoyable summer.
Our children had many opportunities this summer to learn and to have
some fun at the same time. Many participat-ed in the Launch for Life Summer Camp which was a partnership between the FHA and New Hope Academy. The camp this year focused on science, technology, engineering and math concepts. If your child participated
we hope they enjoyed it.
There were many other opportunities for our children this summer including camp at Lone
Oak and Barefoot Republic.
We are appreciative of the relationship we have with the various summer programs and look forward to strengthening and expand-
ing them.
The summer camp options provided the chil-dren opportunities to learn as a child’s edu-cation is vitally important to their future and
their ability to be self-sufficient.
As parents prepare for the start of the school year, we encourage you to look at the tips in the newsletter for a success-ful school year. These tips will help you have a successful start to the year. The best way to ensure success for your chil-dren in school is to encourage them and be involved in their education. The in-volvement can be as simple as making sure they get to school on time and are prepared for the school day. Another way to ensure success is to talk with your child’s teachers about progress and
where help may be needed.
The FHA is gearing up for the start of school as well. We will be starting pro-gramming in the fall that will assist our families and students. Stay tuned for
more information.
Have a great last few days of summer.
Sincerely,
Derwin Jackson

One program that will take place in August is the Be Aware program offered by Centerstone. This program helps young adults prevent and reduce the onset of substance abuse and HIV-AIDS. The program teaches participants about the connection between substance abuse and the transmission of HIV/AIDS, arming them with the knowledge and skills to avoid both. How does it work? Program is free of charge Participants meet in small groups Free and confidential HIV testing is available to participants Class hours count toward Families First community service hours Participants (ages 18 and older) who complete confidential surveys receive $10 Walmart gift cards* Be Aware program takes place on Tuesday, August 13th through Friday, August 16th from 10:00 am to noon at 200 Spring St.

It’s that time of the year when children and parents start getting ready to go back to school. It is important to start the year off on a positive note. Here are several tips to ensure that your child is ready for the upcoming school year and will continue to
thrive in academics.
Stock up on school supply essentials now. Many recommend buying basic supplies before the first day of school. Tax-free
weekend is August 2nd through the 4th.
Move back bedtime.
Organize a family calendar to include homework.
Make sure that your child has all of their vaccinations necessary to start school.
Finally, support and encourage your child to do their best and expect the best. FHA would like to wish everyone a success-
ful school year whether young or old going for the educational dream.
For more information on establishing a positive environment for your child’s learning experience, contact Tena at 794-1247,
ext. 212.

Resident Association Message
Residents’ Association Members, There will be a residents’ meeting on August 13 at 5:00 at 108 Johnson Cir-cle. Any resident wanting to run for a Residents’ Association office should attend the meeting in order to be nominated. Special Guest and Election Observer will be Teresa Burns, Executive Director of GAP Community Development. On August 20 there will be a joint security and neighborhood watch meeting with the Franklin Police Department at 200 Spring St. at 5:30. Resident participation is vital in offering residents a way to build working relationships with the housing authority and create a positive living environment in public housing. One form of resident participation is available through the resident council (Association). A resident council is a group of public housing residents who organize by holding elections for officers and adopting by-laws that serve as a road-map for how the council will conduct its business. The council’s democratically elect-ed board must consist of members who have been elected by the voting membership (Resident
Body). This group plays a part in improving the quality of life for public housing communities and brings a wide variety of issues to the attention of housing authorities from safety to pet and eviction policies and much more.
Public Housing residents can serve on resident councils if they are: 1) heads of household (of any age) or 2) a household member whose name is on the lease and at least 18 years old. They also have to
meet any additional requirements that are written into the resident council bylaws.
It is important that the resident council and the housing authority have a good working relation-ship and that the channels of communication remain open. Residents may make suggestions regard-ing decisions being made by the housing authority since the residents have firsthand knowledge of what is needed in their respective communities. By developing a productive working relationship, the residents and housing authority can flourish together to make our community better. We hope residents living in the five areas up for election will stand up to make their community better and more positive by running for a Residents’ Association office.
Sincerely,
Residents’ Association Board of Directors
THIS MONTH’S

A recent article in USA Today discussed the problems being created in city sewer sys-tems from disposable and disinfectant wipes being flushed down the toilets. The materials in these wipes do not break down in the sanitary sewer systems and can block sewer lines, clog equipment and increase maintenance and repair costs. Many brands are labeled as flushable and they MAY make it through the pipes near the home but they tend to clog up once in the sewer system. This can increase the cost for all in the long run as repairs to the utility systems add up. We encourage our residents to throw these wipes away and not flush them down the toilets. Thanks for your help in
controlling these repair costs.

Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins
Breakfast is an important meal and eating a smart breakfast leads to healthier choices all day long.
These Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins are the perfect thing for the kids! Tossing frozen blueberries with
flour before adding them to the batter keeps them from turning the batter purple while they bake. If
you use fresh blueberries, skip that step.
Ingredients: 1 2/3 cups quick cooking oats 1 1/2 cups low-fat buttermilk 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup canola oil 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 cups frozen blueberries 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Cooking spray 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1. Preheat oven to 400° 2. Place oats in a food processor; pulse 5 to 6 times or until oats resemble coarse meal. Place in large bowl. 3. Weigh or lightly spoon flours into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Add flours and next 5 ingredients (through salt) to oats; stir well. Make a well in the center of mixture. 4. Combine buttermilk and next 3 ingredients (through eggs). Add to flour mixture; stir until just moist. 5. Toss berries with 2 tablespoons flour, and gently fold into batter. Spoon batter into 16 muffin cups coated with cooking spray.; sprinkle 2 tablespoons granulated sugar evenly over batter. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until muffins spring back when touched lightly in center. Remove from pans immediately; place on wire rack.
