Easter Message From Mr Duffield As we finish the Spring term, I wish to thank the entire Glyn community of students, staff and families for their continued fantastic commitment to the school and collective contribution to making this such a successful term. In the past two weeks we have again been fortunate to welcome Michele Miller to the school. Michele has led evening Revision Skills presentations for our Year 11 and Year 13 students and their families. These presentations have proved incredibly popular and insightful and, along with the personalised Revision Folders issued to all students, and our programme of Easter Revision sessions, we trust that all of our students are equipped to make the most of the Easter break in their preparations for their GCSE and A Level exams next term. Today the whole school came together in our traditional manner for an assembly to reflect upon and celebrate all that we have achieved this term. The bulk of these assemblies are presented by our Student Leadership Team, consisting of our Head Girl and Boy, Anya Losyk and Lewis Rogerson, supported by their Deputies, Lucie Begbie, Niya Ivanova, Lily Kyle, James Kelly, James Peters and Thomas Ralton. The highlight of the assembly saw the announcement of the composition of our new Student Leadership Team. Following a rigorous interview process, for the past two weeks applicants for Head Boy and Head Girl have presented their case with hustings in front of all students during a series of assemblies. Students and staff then cast their views in a ballot. The choice was incredibly difficult, given the outstanding calibre of the entire cohort of candidates. I am delighted to confirm that the baton has been handed on to our new Head Girl and Head Boy, Rebecca Norman and James Besley-Tyrrell, who are joined by the team of Deputies, Emily Nejand, Emma O’Neill, Phoebe Spencer, Tomas Davey, Marcus Roberts and Ben Sammon. I am incredibly excited at the prospect of working with this team of outstanding young leaders and witnessing the contribution that they will bring to improving our school. I would also like to pay tribute to the outgoing Student Leadership Team and thank them for their remarkable dedication and effort during the past 12 months. Staffing As with every term, we say goodbye to a number of colleagues as they move on to pastures new. We would like to thank Mrs James for her valued contribution to the SEND department, and wish Dr Smith well as he moves on from the Science Faculty. We are delighted to officially welcome Mr Lawal to the Science Faculty, who will also be joined by our new Head of Physics, Mr Sinclair. I would like to extend my best wishes to all our students and families in the hope of a restful Easter break, whilst reminding our Year 11 and Year 13 students that their long summer break would be the more appropriate time to relax in earnest.

New Head Girl, Head Boy and Student Leadership Team Announcement Over the past three weeks, Year 12 candidates for Head Boy and Head Girl have been put through their paces in a rigorous interview process. Firstly they had to write a formal letter of application, outlining their vision for the role. Each candidate was then interviewed by a panel, including Mr Duffield and members of the Student and Sixth Form Leadership team. After this, eight candidates were shortlisted who went on to present five assemblies to ensure each student in the school had a chance to hear their vision and message. Every student in the school then had a chance to vote, alongside all staff members. Taking into consideration all of the above, we were thrilled to announce the new Head Boy and Head Girl in our end of term whole school assembly. Many congratulations to James Besley-Tyrrell and Becky Norman on their new positions. They will be supported by Deputies: Tomas Davey, Ben Sammon, Marcus Roberts, Emily Nejand, Emma O’Neill and Phoebe Spencer. We look forward to working together to build their vision into a reality over the course of the next year. Miss Thompkins, Assistant Headteacher, Head of Sixth Form

Charity Concert in Aid of ‘Glyn Helpline’ - Wednesday 25 April at 7.00pm Whilst the finer details are being arranged, I would like to let you know about a forthcoming event that the Head Girl, Anya Losyk, and I are organising. We intend to hold a charity concert on Wednesday 25 April at 7.00pm at Glyn School in aid of ‘Glyn Helpline’, a support website we are setting up for young people affected by cancer (directly or indirectly), as well as mental illness. The evening will feature musical items by Glyn students and staff. Whilst the event will be free, we hope to raise funds for our charity through the sale of refreshments on the evening and your kind donations. We will bring you further details after the Easter holiday, but please pencil the date in your diaries! Calling Glyn’s Musicians! We are looking for a few more performers for the above Charity Concert, so any student or staff musicians who would like to play should contact us via [email protected] Lewis Rogerson, Head Boy, and Anya Losyk, Head Girl

Toby Payne 13C1 – Surrey Swimming Successes Over the last few weekends Toby has been competing in the Surrey Swimming Championships, which has taken place in a number of prestigious venues across the County, including the Olympic Pool, over several weekends. Hard work and determination has led to Toby winning Gold in the 200m backstroke and Silver in the 400 IM (Individual Medley). This would be an achievement worth crediting in itself, let alone that Toby has simultaneously maintained his work ethic and exemplary time management skills in ensuring he achieves fantastic A Level grades across the three subjects that he is studying, with the ambition of going to university to study Physiotherapy. Keep going, Toby. You will keep getting the results in the pool, as well as the results in your exams! Mr Martin, Head of PE and Games

The LRC Book of the Week is Illusion by Stephanie Elmas This book is about the early life of East End mystic and illusionist, Walter Balanchine, and is written by Stephanie Elmas, a teacher here at Glyn. In 1873 Walter Balanchine returns to London from his travels. He is known for the charms, potions and locket hanging from his neck. Word soon spreads of his healing and magical abilities and he becomes a sought after party performer. Walter is keen to find out about his mother, as he has never known his family. After meeting a young woman called Tamara he becomes embroiled in mystery and drama and finds his mother may be closer to home than he realised! “This was a great book full of interesting characters, deep secrets and fantastic twists and turns. I really enjoyed it. Everyone should read this, as Mrs Elmas is a great author.” Patrick Humphris 10 Abbey This book is available to borrow from the LRC. Mrs Woolridge, Study Skills Director

Emily Nejand 12D - Irish Dancing World Championships We wish Emily Nejand 12D the best of luck as she and her team head off to Glasgow this weekend for the Irish Dancing World Championships. Glyn Boxing Club Starting After Easter It is with great pleasure that I am able to write to offer another extra-curricular opportunity to all students at Glyn. We have been in contact with a professional boxer with a view to setting up a Glyn Boxing Club and we have had success in recruiting Dan Morley, a 21 year old professional boxer and qualified coach from the local area. Dan has an impressive record in the ring, being London Champion twice, Southern Counties Champion three times, NABC Southern England Champion and a London Boxing representative. We are privileged to have him come into school to help our boxing. Glyn Boxing Club will be open to all students from Years 7 to 13, male and female. There will be two clubs on offer: Mondays will be for students in Years 10 to 13 and Wednesdays will be for students in Years 7 to 9. Both sessions will take place in the Sports Hall from 3.15pm - 4.30pm. You will not need any special equipment if you don’t already have it. The club will be starting on the first week back after Easter, Monday 16 April for Years 10 to 13 and Wednesday 18 April for Years 7 to 9. Initially, there will be no charge for Boxing Club as the school will pay for the training since we feel it has so many benefits to students, including health and fitness, anger management and the discipline that is needed to box. If there are any questions please let me know. Mr Martin, Head of PE and Games

Target Shooting School On Saturday 24 March, Tom Heron 7C took part in at Target Shooting competition in Kingston. One of the instructors, Mikshan Hettiarachchi, who is an IPSC Practical Shooting Champion, which is a timed event, created a version of his sport using both air rifle and air pistol for the students to take part in. I am delighted to say that Tom Heron won this event in an amazing time of 1.58 mins. Mr Martin, Head of PE and Games

Holidays during Term Time As you are aware, the development of your son or daughter’s education is a key gateway to future success and, specifically, to employment opportunities. Obviously, the importance of a student’s attendance and punctuality cannot be overstated. As a school we are legally permitted to uphold Department for Education legislation in relation to family holidays taken in term time. Mr Duffield will only grant leave of absence in exceptional circumstances in recognition that taking a student out of school in term time can impair their progress and development. Permission for leave of absence in exceptional circumstances must be applied for by writing to Mr Duffield, care of the Attendance Officer via [email protected] We thank parents and carers for their continued support and cooperation in maintaining our students’ excellent attendance. Mrs Scruton, Attendance Officer

Chef of the Month - March 2018 Spring term has been concluded in Food Technology with: Year 8 students designing and making their own well-balanced main meal dishes, Year 9 students putting their knowledge of gelatinisation into practice, making sweet and sour chicken, Year 10 students cooking up a wide variety of tasty Easter treats, and Year 11 students reflecting on their PPE papers to develop their exam technique ahead of the summer exam series. The following students have stood out this month for their fantastic work and positive attitudes, making them deserving of the title of Chef of the Month: Year 8 Chef of the Month – Callum Montanino, 8 Tudor For developing a strong set of skills throughout the term (particularly kneading) and always working efficiently in practical lessons. A young Paul Hollywood in the making! Year 9 Chef of the Month – Ben Cunningham, 9M For consistently showing great enthusiasm in lessons, and for always being a helpful member of the class. Year 10 Chef of the Month – Jack Rosser, 10 Abbey For always putting 100% effort into classwork and ILT, and for being very conscientious and hardworking. Year 11 Chef of the Month – Stephen Hayward, 11 Tudor For his unfaltering effort and persistent hard work with his non-examination assessments. As well as receiving achievement points, these students will be entered into a prize draw to win a recipe book, which will be drawn in time for the winner to be announced in the end of term assembly. Well done to all! Miss Owen, Head of Abbey House, Head of Food Technology

Fundraising for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation My name is Thomas Williams and I’m in Year 13 at Glyn. I'm now just four weeks away from running my first ever London Marathon. I've been hard at work training since October for something I have absolutely no experience in! I'm not an athlete at all, however, I am well on my way to being ready for the marathon! I am running for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) as my cousin Emily has suffered from Type 1 Diabetes for 10 years and it's a charity close to our family's heart. Extra information on my story can be found on my fundraising page (link below). If anyone would be willing to make a donation of any size towards my chosen charity, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, it would be greatly appreciated. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thomas-williams-26 Thomas Williams 13 Oaks 2

Photography A Level Students Have Made Fabulous Progress For the first time, Glyn’s Art & Design department has this year offered Photography A Level. In the absence of an on-site dark room, students have been welcomed at our local partnership school, The Beacon, and have undertaken the course there. Students have made fabulous progress this year, learning both digital and manual techniques for photography manipulation as part of their ‘Explore & Discover’ and ‘Freedom & Limitations’ projects. A particular well done to Chris Harrison and Jessie Harding whose work is pictured. Miss Gascoigne, Head of Art & Photography On behalf of Miss Bennett, Art & Photography Teacher at The Beacon School

Year 11 Sketchbook Show For the past several weeks, students in Year 11 have been working tirelessly on sketchbooks, in time to unveil them to staff at an afterschool sketchbook showing. Students felt that this was a great opportunity to present them to teachers who may not witness the creativity of some students in other subject areas in the school. Kicking off the sketchbook show, students placed their art on tables; these pieces ranged from abstract portraits in oil pastel, to clay works, to wire sculptures. The students had just finished their five hour PPE exam the same day, and welcomed the opinions of teachers from a range of subjects such as English, Science, Maths and many more. The range of ideas and responses from students was incredible. Along with intricate sketchbooks, some created large scale, resolve pieces, with inspiration taken from artists they find particularly inspiring. Each student’s work responds to one of the chosen themes from the exam paper: Human figure Telling stories In the news Materials Light and dark In a different way Connections The wide range of themes allowed each student to work in a certain medium or style that they found interesting. As of now, each artist is creating very different pieces, which certainly adds to a competitive atmosphere as we enter the final weeks of the GCSE course! I, like many students, am greatly looking forward to our final exam. This is because all of the previous work, as done in our sketchbooks and at home, is tied together and competed by one large, practical piece of art… over the course of a mammoth 10 hour exam! On behalf of the students, thank you to all the teachers who came to see our work. Tom Murphy, 11 St Benet

Glyn PSA Notices Off-Road Driver Training 16+ (Now on ParentPay) The PSA are very lucky to have been donated vouchers for RoadCraft Off-Road Driver Training held at Mole Business Park in Leatherhead on Sundays. This provides a course of junctions and road layout in a safe environment. These vouchers give 16 year olds the opportunity to start their driving practice before their 17th birthday. Training starts approximately a month before their 17th birthday. They don't even need to hold their provisional licence. The vouchers are only £59 and provide three hours off-road training. RoadCraft has been established for over 15 years, helping to qualify over 50 instructors and 1,000s of students with an ethos of teaching to a higher standard and safe driving for life, not just to pass the test. Their unique off-road course teaches students to handle the car confidently and to be prepared to start a safe and complete driving experience. Having the off-road course considerably reduces the number of hours needed for on-road lessons. Then if you choose to commit to a course of 10 lessons on-road with Roadcraft, you will receive an additional free lesson. RoadCraft lessons are £230 for 10 lessons and they have both male and female instructors. Other driving schools are charging £40 per hour for this off-road driving. These vouchers make ideal presents and they are now available to any friends or family, as well as Glyn students. Please email [email protected] for more information. Matched Funding Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could double the money we make from the Glyn Christmas Fayre or one of our discos? Many companies offer their employees the chance to take part in a matched funding scheme. The company will provide additional funding to a good cause (usually on a £ for £ basis up to a maximum amount). Argos, Barclays, Boots, Citigroup, Ford, HBOS, J Sainsbury, KPMG, Legal & General, RBS, Tesco, Thames Water and Unilever are just a few companies that offer Matched Funding. Generally, the employee must have been involved in the fundraising event as a volunteer. For example, a parent or carer who works for a company that offers Matched Funding volunteers to work on the refreshment stall at the PSA Fayre. The profit made by the stall is £250. The parent’s or carer’s employer will then match this amount with a further £250 (assuming they offer a £ for £ match). The amount offered will vary depending on the organisation and conditions may apply. The PSA is a registered Charity. If you require further information, or work for a company that offers Matched Funding, please get in touch. Small Electrical Donations - Mobile Phones and Video Games Thank you for your donations so far this year; we have had ski wear, laptops and DVD players donated. If you have unwanted jewellery, scrap gold or gadgets such as mobiles, cameras, video games, games consoles, laptops, DVDs or MP3 players lying around the house, we would love to have them. If you would like to donate any items to the PSA at Glyn School, please hand your donations into Student Reception. We are also happy to collect any large items. All monies raised through the sale of these donations will be used to provide funding for extra resources at Glyn School. WIN! WIN! WIN! With the Glyn PSA! WIN! That is what can happen when you join the Glyn PSA 200 CLUB. Every £1 you give goes towards both prizes. There are 18 prizes per term and the top prize can exceed £200.

Over the years that the 200 Club has been in existence, more than £70,000 has been raised for Glyn to purchase items for every area of school life.

To participate, you just buy one or more numbers in the monthly draw, at £12 per number per year. There is no limit to the number of entries you can purchase. The draw is open to anyone over the age of 16, so please encourage friends and relatives to join. Ideally, payment is made annually by standing order, or you may pay by cheque, £12 per number annually, payable to Glyn School PSA 200 Club.

The form is available on the Glyn website in the PSA section, or alternatively email the PSA at [email protected] for a form or further information.

Foreign Coins and Notes

We are now collecting towards our next 10kg of coins, so please keep your donations coming in. You can help without really having to put your hand in your pocket by simply sorting out any old foreign notes and coins left over from holidays and business trips. Many people have some old foreign currency, either notes or coins and perhaps some old UK or Irish decimal coins. It sits in pots and drawers and is unlikely to be used again, especially if it is from countries where the currency has become the Euro. The PSA would like all worldwide current currency in notes or coins and any of the older currency such as the German Marks, Spanish Pesetas, old UK Shillings, old UK decimal coins including Ireland, Channel Islands, Scotland, Isle of Man and £5 or £2 coins. Old half or full crowns and silver or brass coloured 3 pence pieces can also be exchanged. You can even donate old farthings and pennies, 1d or 1/2d. The coins and small notes cannot be exchanged in the UK, and old Spanish Pesetas cannot be spent in Spain, so they are of little value to anyone. The PSA can turn your old money into a valuable donation. It is estimated that there is £100 million in old or foreign coins across the UK that could be used for good causes, so please dig out yours and get it to Glyn Student Reception today! If your business would be willing to have a collection box on our behalf, please get in touch with the PSA at [email protected] for collection leaflets and posters. Glyn PSA [email protected]

Glyn/Chelsea Football Club (CFC) Students’ Trips and Successes: Spring Term English Trip to Shakespeare’s Globe, Bankside, in January We were treated to a short tour of the theatre and a brief lesson in historical context and theatre-going in the Jacobean era. Afterwards, the students were taken to a rehearsal space and worked on interpreting key lines from the play studied (Macbeth) with professional actor, Sam Oately, resulting in some interesting performances!

Chelsea students and staff were fortunate enough to have a team building/motivational day at Stamford Bridge in February, with guest speaker, Luke Staton, alongside a Business Studies workshop run by Paul Ramos, Finance Officer at CFC. Again, the students’ behaviour and focus was a credit to CFC and Glyn School as they engaged with each other, with honesty and positivity.

We finished the term with a Maths Puzzle Day! The Glyn/CFC students spent the day working in teams, trying to complete a circuit of numerical and logic puzzles, before deciding on the winner with an ‘escape room’ locked box challenge. Congratulations to all students for engaging with focus and determination.

Stop Press Currently away with England Youth Squads are: Faustino Anjorin (Year 11) with England U17s, and Myles Peart-Harris and Valentino Livramento (both Year 10) with England U16s Mr P Taylor, English, Lead Practitioner, CFC

Harlequins Trip for Key Stage 3 Fourteen students were given the opportunity of a lifetime - to spend a day in the life of a professional rugby player, thanks to Harlequins (‘Quins) Rugby Club. Freddie Thompsett 9 Tudor comments on his day below. Mr Hawkes, KS3 Coordinator PE, Rugby Academy Leader

We started off the day by watching the ‘Quins squad play basketball, which was due to the increasing injury list at ‘Quins and the lack of players to put on a training session, but it was good to see the 1st team players and ask them questions and get a photo with them. After this, we met Mark Lambert, who plays front row for ‘Quins, who talked to us about the life of a professional rugby player. He also answered any of our questions, which included questions such as the pathway into being a professional player, and how much you got paid! We then went on a tour of their training facilities with Graham, the 1st Team Manager, who took time from his busy day to show us what went on behind the scenes. We were able to see where the players relaxed, the medical rooms, as well as watching Jamie Roberts and Ross Chisholm looking at some video analysis. We were then taken to the gym to speak to Tim Hall, who is Harlequins’ Head of Strength and Conditioning, and he gave us some pointers on how to improve our strength and fitness and discussed where we should be at this point in our rugby journey. We then had a training session from the women’s coach, Gary Street, who had organised the day for us. This was really exciting as we found out that he had been the Head Coach of England Women when they won the World Cup. Physiotherapy and Video Analysis departments who gave us insight into the other career pathways in sport. Overall, the day was a great experience and a further insight into the life of a professioanl rugby player. Freddie Thompsett, 9T

Games Lessons All students are required to take part in their PE or Games lesson, so they need to bring appropriate kit for all weather conditions. I would like to remind you of the correct procedure if your son is injured or unfit to take part in his Games or PE lesson. On these occasions, students will be set alternative activities such as coaching and officiating. Students will still be taking part in the lesson and not missing out on their learning opportunities. Appropriate clothing for the weather conditions needs to be worn in order that they do not ruin their school uniform and for their comfort. If in exceptional circumstances your son is unable to get changed or take any part in class please contact either myself or your son's Head of House to make alternative arrangements, if this is deemed appropriate. We need to ensure all students are accounted for during Games and PE lessons. Thank you for your cooperation. Mr Martin, Head of PE and Games

The End of Seven Years of Hard Work and Fun for Glyn’s 1st XV Saturday 17 March saw the end of seven years of rugby for many players in this year’s current 1st XV. We were visited by Guelph College who had just begun their own journey in rugby where some of the players had only played six games prior to this one. It was a cold, snowy day and the last shout in the changing room bellowed out as the players came on to the pitch for the last time. This wasn’t really the weather we were hoping for to celebrate their last ever game but, never the less, it was a game, and one played in the right spirit. Glyn raced away to a 59 – 0 victory with a stunning final try with Toby Payne kicking backwards over the line for us to touch down in the corner. This season has seen many highs and lows; highs including going to Reigate Grammar and beating the current National Cup Champions, to playing their first ever game under lights against old rivals, Freemen’s. It’s always hard to say goodbye to rugby players as we ask them every week to give their all to the team and represent their school with gusto, but here we are again in my 24th season saying goodbye to another amazing group of students. Players and staff will never really know how to say how they feel, but it’s the rugby camaraderie that will always be there and makes Glyn’s rugby players ‘friends for life’. Some of these players have played together for the whole seven years and they will always have each other. These students will go their own separate ways at the end of the year and I am sure they will give the same enthusiasm and commitment to wherever they play next and show the true spirit of Glyn Rugby wherever they are. The memories they share will be amazing: from their first ever game, to the Canada Tour, to the floodlight game against Freemen’s. In the end, rugby is rugby and we love playing, watching and coaching. Even as a teacher, you always watch on from the sideline as a rugby fan, too. I wish all the players the best of luck in their exams and for their future careers. I also look forward to seeing them on the pitches again at some point in the future. Mr Hawkes, KS3 Coordinator, Rugby Academy Leader

Wishing you a restful Easter holiday.

Basketball Glyn v Rosebery On Tuesday 27 March, the Glyn Basketball Team hosted a friendly tournament with Rosebery, after participating in their charity Netball game. As we near the end of the season, it was nice to have a fun, competitive evening after a long, hard season. To make things a little more even, we fielded a mixed team as well as a boys’ team. The tournament started with the all boys’ team versus the Rosebery B team, and even though the all boys’ team were able to score easily, the Rosebery girls were a fierce competition, with a lot of very physical players. The first game ended with the Glyn boys taking the lead in the tournament standings. The second game was the very highly anticipated Glyn mixed team against the Rosebery A team. The Glyn team found it hard to score against such a formidable defence, with only 4 points being scored in the first half for Glyn. In the second half, Glyn were on fire, going on a seemingly unstoppable run until the Rosebery girls bounced back and scored basket after basket. In the dying seconds of the game, Rosebery had 2 free throws that would have tied the game. They made the first, leaving them only 1 point down. They then missed the second one, but managed to get the rebound and score in the last second, winning the game! In the biggest shock of the day, Rosebery had beaten Glyn! The third game saw the Glyn all boys’ team versus the Glyn mixed team. This game was jam-packed with many defensive plays and a variety of missed chances from both sides, but in the end the Glyn all boys’ team came out victorious. The final game was the Rosebery A team against the Rosebery B team. This was another exciting game because even though the Rosebery A team won easily, there were a few crazy shots scored that had both sides up on their feet. Altogether it was a really fun evening and a nice, relaxed way to end the season before exams begin. A huge thank you to Mrs Mabbott for overseeing the proceedings and organising everything, Mr Levett for refereeing the tournament and to the Rosebery girls for being such good competition. Also, thank you to everyone who came to watch and made for a great environment. Teams: Glyn Mixed Team: Alex Dale, Marco Pizzingrilli, Tom Rusis, Alice Clarke, Georgina Carswell and Daisy Meffan.
