Primary School

As the 2017 school year draws to a close I have many thankyous I would like to make. BCDS are lucky to have committed staff and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Jane Crawford and Jenni Caldwell who taught the Reception class this year and Alicia Piggott who stepped in; in Jenni’s absence in term 2, Tamara Schmidt taught the 5/6 class and Marika Spielhagen who was responsible for the Year 1/2 class and we wish her all the best in her new adventure at Orroroo Area School next year. Our primary classes are also extremely lucky to have our trusty SSO’s Elfie Woolford, Ebony Rodda and Craig Roberts who have provided excellent support for our students this year and also our Pastoral Support Worker Trish Hooper, who visits our classes and has run the Kimochi program, based on feelings. Also, Anthony Edgecumbe, Elaine Forrest, Kate Fitzgerald, Alby Nicholls, Toby Cocks, Mini Bath, John Sutton who have taken Primary classes for Art, Library, Science, HASS and PE. I would also like to acknowledge any volunteers who have helped in anyway this year whether it be in the classroom, sports carnivals, excursions or camps. Thankyou! Our school would not function effectively without the role each and every one of you play. Finally thankyou to the students, Booleroo Centre District School is blessed to have such wonderful kids who all follow our school values of integrity, responsibility, resilience and respect. These qualities in our children ensure excellent learning is happening throughout our school and all children are doing their best.

This term alone has been very busy; the year 5/6 students went to Victor Harbor on an Aquatics camp with Miss Schmidt, we had a movie night, students received their Jump Rope for Heart prizes after raising over $4000, our beautiful green space was opened, we had our ‘Time Wanderers’ performance where the children performed admirably, we had our R-12 presentation night and today we finish with our class parties at the pool.

Staff have also continued their commitment to performance development working on Learning Design and Moderation within the partnership, attending Bright Path Literacy and Quick Smart maths trainings.

On Monday night we had the whole school presentation night. It was great to see the night was well attended by primary students and their families. Congratulations to the award winners from the night;

In closing, I would like to wish any families leaving the primary classes all the best for the future and wish your children a smooth transition where ever they may be headed. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and safe and prosperous 2018. We look forward to your continue support in 2018.

Thank you

Next year I am going on leave and then heading into retirement (well that is the plan!) After 20 years of working at this school (firstly for 5 years as a SSO and 15 years as a teacher) there are many people I would like to say thank you to.

Firstly, thank you to the wider community for your support of all the Food and Hospitality functions over the years including the annual Lions Dinner, luncheons, morning teas, high teas and catering and fundraising ventures, most notably Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Your support has been extremely valuable in giving students a taste of the hospitality industry and the opportunity to extend their planning, preparing and presentation skills to a wider audience than just at school. Without the support of the community these learning experiences for the students would not have been to the same standard, so a big thank you to all who have attended any functions or purchased food prepared by the students over the years.

Thank you to all staff, past and present, who have always supported the students by attending these functions and giving encouragement.

A highlight of this job has been seeing the pride and sense of achievement students have gained for their efforts at these functions. I would also like to thank the businesses in Booleroo and surrounding towns for their generous donation of time given to the Year 11 Business Studies class (when running) for filling out surveys, interviews and being guest speakers. This has been invaluable in giving students an insight into the fundamentals of running a business.

Thank you to the local IGA and Booleroo Meat for sourcing the ingredients (often in very small amounts) and hosting the students for research for Food and Hospitality classes.

When younger the one thing I knew that I didn’t want to do was to become a teacher, but I was wrong! It has been an absolute privilege working among such a great bunch of young people for the last 20 years.

Wishing you all a merry festive season and a happy and prosperous New Year. Take care.

Janet Arbon

The school wishes to thank Janet Arbon

for her superlative efforts over the years.
