Welcome to our spring newsletter, and I can safely say that spring has sprung. As You will read later in this post that there have been some substantial staff changes since I last wrote, however we have endeavoured to keep continuity within the team. There are some new faces but there has also been promotion opportunities within the existing team. Our other exciting news is that we are continuing with our renovations within Marriott House. The next large project is to complete the dining room. The servery will be removed and this area is going to become a life style kitchen. This will enable residents and guests to access the area for hot drinks etc. There will be some upheaval during the building process, but I have been assured that we will be able to continue with our normal dining experience. Marriott House and Lodge has once again been involved in Dignity in Care day. Dignity action day is an annual opportunity for health and social care workers and members of the public to promote individuality and to uphold people’s rights to dignity and provide a truly memorable day for people who use care services. In the lead up to Dignity in care day a special tree was stuck onto the window in the hallway for everyone to see. We invited all residents, families, friends and staff to complete a leaf with their idea of what dignity means to them. These leaves were added to the tree for all to see. During the morning the

Residents made cakes and biscuits with our volunteer Sue, The afternoon included a special ‘Tea Tasting Afternoon’. Residents and

visitors tried many different flavoured teas and enjoyed the cakes and biscuits they made.

BAPTISM AT MARRIOTT HOUSE On Sunday the 9th of February Mrs Bessie Patterson was baptised, aged 91. The service was conducted by Cedar Ministry who hold a service every month within the home. The baptism service was led by Alistair McKitterick who said, ‘Our aim at Cedar Ministry is to share God's love and serve people in local care homes.’ The service was very well attended by residents and staff from Marriott House, and Bessie’s brother and niece were there to celebrate it with her. We want to see people find faith in God, grow strong, flourish and bear fruit right into old age, so it was wonderful to see Bessie respond in this way. Bessie has always contributed to our service through leading us in prayer, and it was a real privilege to baptise her surrounded by family and friends’.

BARCHESTER TOP EMPLOYERS FOR THIRD TIME RUNNING!

It’s exciting to announce that the company has yet again been officially certified by the Top Employers Institute for its exceptional employee offerings.

The Top Employers Institute globally certifies excellence in the conditions and development opportunities that employers create for their people. Barchester is one of the select organisations to achieve the Top Employers United Kingdom 2014 certification and delighted to be officially recognised as a leading employer.

Jeremy Colman, HR Director at Barchester, said “We are delighted to have achieved certification for the third time on the Top Employers list. The feedback we receive helps us focus our efforts on improving our employee offering and the cross-company benchmarking offered is a really valuable way to share best practice."

Paul Middleton, Head of Vocational Qualifications at Barchester, displays the award!

SUNDAY TIMES BEST BIG COMPANY

We are very proud to make the Sunday Times 25 Best Big Companies to work for 2014 list. The results were announced at a ceremony hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Kate Silverton. The high-ranking accolade was voted for by many of Barchester’s staff by completing anonymous questionnaires distributed at random. This is the 6th year that we have achieved a top 25 listing, and we are still the only care provider to be listed this year!

Terry Tucker, Director for Learning, Organisational Development and Hospitality for Barchester Healthcare accepted the award, and said: “Barchester is proud to deliver person-centred care for the people we support and to offer our teams real benefits and career choices in return for their dedication.

Creating an environment like ours means employing and developing caring people who love their job. This is the foundation for the best possible care and generates a truly positive living and working atmosphere.”

We are delighted to announce that Barchester Healthcare is a finalist of the HealthInvestor Awards 2014. HealthInvestor first launched the awards in 2007 to promote excellence and recognise innovation in the UK health sector. We’ve been successfully shortlisted in the category of ‘Residential care provider of the year’.

The awards are attended by the health and social care sector's key opinion formers and the winners will be revealed on the 11th June 2014 at Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

APPRENTICESHIP WEEK WAS TEEMING WITH ACTIVITY

Three young Barchester apprentices attend a career fair hosted by

the Deputy PM Nick Clegg Before the beginning of Apprenticeship Week, Barchester was invited to attend a speech hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg who set out what the government is doing to improve education, training and job opportunities for young people aged 16 to 24. Our Learning and Development team has been working with The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills and Department for Education to help reform Apprenticeships and create these new national standards on the adult social care, hospitality and property maintenance groups. These plans are still in the development stage and they cover eight diverse sector Trailblazer groups. A couple of the team also visited 10 Downing Street to discuss the importance of the developments. Terry Tucker said: "Barchester is delighted to be involved in the development of a nursing apprenticeship standard. We have been working towards this for over two years by developing great career pathways for our ambitious carers. It builds on the success of our advanced apprenticeship programmes and offers motivated people the opportunity to advance their career into nursing.” Mark Kite is the Chair of the Trailblazer group of Employers for Property Services and Head of Contracts and Development of Barchester Healthcare. He said: “We are working together to ensure that Apprenticeship standards for Property Maintenance Technicians match our needs as employers while continuing to attract dedicated employees who we can develop to the right level and offer great bespoke training opportunities.” Homes all across the Barchester group celebrated National Apprenticeship week with a variety of activities to recognise the role our apprentices play.

NEW BUILDS GET NEW NAMES

The names of Barchester’s two newest homes have been revealed!

Sutton Grange is the new name given to the care development that is under construction on Greaves Hall Avenue, in the Banks area of Southport. The home's namesake is William Sutton who founded the town of Southport in 1792. William was commonly known as 'The Old Duke' and he opened the first hotel located on what is now the junction of Duke Street and Lord Street. It seemed fitting to name the care home after a key figure in the town's past. The name Braeburn Lodge for new care home in Deeping St James, Lincolnshire was chosen through a naming competition launched within the local community. A local man, Roy Howes, is the lucky winner and will receive a cheque for £500 to donate to a charity of his choice. Roy put forward the name of Braeburn Lodge as an apple orchard used to be on the site of the care home. Some of the other strong entries were Deeplands View and St James Lodge.

National Nutrition week was celebrated throughout many of our homes around the country. This important week strives to raise awareness and improve understanding of the vital importance of good nutrition and hydration.
