From the Principal
Our Year 12 students have completed their final VCE exams this week and can now enjoy a well-deserved break at the end of four years of hard work at Suzanne Cory High School. Students who have studied Unit 3 and 4 subjects will receive their results on Monday December 15th. The school community can be very proud of the efforts of students and
staff in this first year of Year 12. Students in Years 9 to 11 have now completed their formal assessments for semester 2 and are beginning their transition program for 2015. Students will be engaged in a variety of learning activities over the next week to prepare themselves for their studies in 2015.
Awards NightThe Awards Night for 2014 will be held at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Tuesday 2nd December. Awards Night 2014 is the most significant celebration in the school calendar—it is an evening to recognise and celebrate student achievements, contributions and efforts throughout the year. It is also an opportunity to hear from Professor Suzanne Cory and there will be special student performances during the evening.
All students are expected to attend Awards Night and we encourage parents and families to attend this evening with students. An invitation is included in this newsletter. There is no charge for this event. Please note that students are required to wear their full school uniform including blazers and badges to Awards Night. Students are not required at school on the day of Awards Night, Tuesday 2nd December but students are required to arrive at the venue by 6.30pm that evening for final arrangements and seating before Awards Night commences at 7pm.
School CaptainsI am pleased to announce the School Captains for 2015. Congratulations to Ricky John and Erene Sakabetis. Ricky and Erene will be formally presented with their School Captain badges at the Awards Night. I also wish to acknowledge the students who nominated for the School Captain positions. All students should be proud of their efforts and we hope these students will involve themselves in leadership opportunities during 2015.Student Leaders for 2015The Student Leadership Program at Suzanne Cory High School is now well developed with a model established
that will create a strong tradition of student participation across leadership domains at the school. Congratulations to the students who will take up positions for 2015 and a special thank you to Ms Timmee Grinham and Ms Marissa Chui for their passion and dedication this year and for their work in coordinating the selection of leaders for 2015. The names of students who will take up leadership positions for 2015 are included in this newsletter.
Class of 2016 Kwong Lee Dow Young ScholarsCongratulations to Sofia Pacheco of year 10 for being accepted into the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program. Over 1900 applications were received from students across Victoria and adjoining border regions. The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program will afford participants the opportunity to mix with like-minded peers and future leaders. A tailored program of events and activities will support and enhance their secondary studies, inspire their career plans and provide opportunities to interact with the university community. Sofia will attend a welcome event in December as one of 700 selected year 10 scholars. Students will be officially welcomed into the program and participate in a number of information sessions on the day including an address from former Vice Chancellor Professor Kwong Lee Dow. Sofia is a worthy recipient who has already been an outstanding leader and ambassador for Suzanne Cory High School. Kay Peddle Acting Principal

On Tuesday 18th November, all of the newly-elected student leaders for 2015 attended a Student Leadership Training Day.
The day began with congratulations and a welcome from Ms Goodridge-Kelly, followed by a session conducted by Project Rockit. Using a series of creative exercises, Project Rockit provided the opportunity for students to examine their values, vision and personal strengths, as well as testing what it means to stand up for what you believe in.
In the second session of the day, leaders worked in groups based on their role. They spent time reflecting on what their role will entail and thinking about their vision for their area of responsibility in the coming year. The different House Domain Leaders met and discussed plans for their particular portfolios – Music, Debating, Sport and Citizenship. Each group then created a job description for their particular position.
In the final session of the day, leaders met in their working groups. The School Captains met with the Principal to discuss key events for 2015, while the SRC met as a group, and the leaders met in their respective House leadership groups. Each group created a vision and strategic plan for 2015 – including outlining their key priorities and assigning responsibilities.
Overall it was a fantastic opportunity for the new leaders to meet each other and to begin planning for their roles and responsibilities in 2015. We believe it has begun to equip them with the skills and vision to embrace their roles and get them off to a flying start next year.

China TourDuring the September school holidays 8 students and 2 staff traveled to China to spend some time at our Sister School, Shanghai Foreign Language School. The students from Years 9-11 spent 6 days at Shanghai Foreign Language School including a weekend with host families who showed them what living in China is like. Before returning home we spent 5 days in Beijing taking in the sights of the Capital. It was fascinating to see the two very different cities and experience the food and cul-ture. This was a fantastic opportunity for the stu-dents to practice their language skills and immerse themselves in the culture.Ms Jacqui Ladd Going to China was a great experience for me, es-pecially since it was my first trip overseas. I found it extremely motivating to be able to use my Chinese speaking skills on people who spoke no English
and to hold a basic conversation. The trip was encouraging for me to continue studying Chinese in year 12, and hopefully others will continue with their Chinese too. My highlights were seeing both the cities (Shanghai and Beijing) at night and stay-ing with my host brother. I think anyone studying Chinese would benefit from the trip as it placed me in situations where communicating in Chinese was a necessity. Louis Devine At the end of the tour I didn’t just simply gain activities to fill the time in during the holidays with, but insight into my culture. The experience gave me an insight into their valued history and the way that people who speak the same Chinese language live out their daily lives.Liang Xue

Social media is more ac-cessible than ever – with the rise of smartphones and tablets, it has never been easier to jump on-line.
For young people, it means being more con-nected than any other generation – friends are
never more than a tweet away.
Unfortunately this has also led to a rapid increase in cyberbullying – to the point that at least one in 10 children are cyberbullied each year.
Cyberbullying can be very different from tradition-al bullying, and many parents can feel ill-equipped to respond if their child is being cyberbullied.
Susan McLean (pictured above), a former police officer and Australia’s leading cybersafety expert, said even if parents have no experience with social media, by following a few basic steps, parents can effectively support their children to be safe online.
'Parenting in the 21st century requires you to be able to parent in the digital space,' Ms McLean said. 'Technology is firmly entrenched in our lives and that of our children so we need the tools to deal with issues as they arise.
'It’s really important that if your child is being cyberbullied, you don’t cut them off from social
media and take their technology away - the vast majority of kids won't tell a parent if they are bul-lied and harassed online for fear of losing access. They would much rather put up with the bad to keep the good.'
Ms McLean said when confronted with their child being cyberbullied, parents should follow the cy-berbullying quick response checklist:
• Reassure and comfort• Don't respond• Block and delete bully• Report to the site• Keep a copy• Tell school (or relevant place) and seek action• If ongoing inform police• Support your child as they have done nothing wrong
The Department’s Bully Stoppers website has a range of advice for parents, students and teach-ers about how to respond to all types of bullying. http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/bullystoppers/Pages/default.aspx
Susan McLean is Australia's leading cybersafety expert and was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years. She was the first Victorian Police officer appointed to a position involving cybersafety and young people. She was one of several experts who authored the Bully Stoppers Resource and is a pub-lished author. Her book Sexts Texts and Selfies - how to keep your child safe in the digital space is available now.
