On Saturday, May 19, 2012,

the 2012 CalUMS gradua-

tion ceremony was held.

We all remember the first

time we contacted CalUMS

to inquire about admission

to the school to further our

education.

You probably first commu-

nicated with Lisa Lee, our

very professional and hard-

working International Stu-

dent Advisor or DJ Johnson,

our fun and energetic re-

cruitment coordinator in

charge of increasing the

school’s student popula-

tion.

We congratulate and honor

all our 2012 graduates. It

takes great commitment

and sacrifice to start and

complete this journey.

Since our graduates are

prepared to face the chal-

lenge of current unfavor-

able economic conditions

felt throughout the world,

this graduation ceremony

is even more significant.

Congratulations to our 2012

graduates!

CalUMS librarian. She earned her bachelor’s

degree in economics from University of Cali-

fornia, Los Angeles, and worked at various

investment firms in Los Angeles before earn-

ing her master’s degree in library and infor-

mation science from San Jose State University.

Prior to joining CalUMS, she worked as a law

librarian at a law firm in Los Angeles, and as a

foreign language school librarian in South

IMPORTANT DATES / Summer 2012

Was it the weather, the students, or CalUMS

itself? Whatever the reason, the Spring Sports

Get-Together was successful! With more than

one hundred attendees, it was one of the best

attended CalUMS events ever!

But what was the Spring Sports Get-

Together? After studying hard day-after-day,

students tend to lose touch with casual fun.

Some believe that this event was successful

due to our hunger for fun. We are starving to

be innocent again and experience a sunburn

on our face.

The event was hosted in Ralph B. Clark Re-

gional Park in Orange County on the 26th of

May 2012. It started with a warm-up exer-

cise, considered torture in a world where we

only move our fingers on our keyboard. For

the first time in months or years we felt our

heart rate go above 90 beats per minute and

felt warm blood circulating in places we

never thought existed.

After the excruciating fun of the warm-up

exercise, the games started to roll. We

played different sports such as volleyball,

football (called soccer if you are like me),

and other games that will never be present in

the summer Olympics (and trust me, our

games were more fun!) It was refreshing to

see the students lower their defenses and

take off their poker shades to just be them-

selves and laugh for hours of recreation.

A get-together is never complete in my

definition without the magic word

“food.” Food is physiologically needed in

every situation, and the event can give you

atherosclerosis while you burn off serious

calories from the games. “The food was

awesome!” according to Mr. Beasca, the

University’s Director of Administration (and

that is not an exaggeration!) The food

might not have been the highlight of the

event, but it brought everyone together.

Overall the Spring Sports Get-Together

was great. Mr. Beasca thinks the event

should be organized every year for our

students and faculty.

If you attended or missed the event please

share your thoughts and post it on our

Facebook page. We would like to hear

your feedback to help us prepare for next

year.

D.J. joined CalUMS in January 2010. A marketing major at

Pasadena City College in the late 1980s D.J. has an exten-

sive background in marketing, merchandising and manage-

ment. Priding himself in customer service, D.J. has success-

fully owned and managed two retail music and clothing

stores in Fontana and Upland, California from 1996 to 2007.

Unfortunately, due to free music downloads and the reces-

sion, he was forced to close them in early 2008.

After a brief stint of unemployment and a painful divorce

D.J. took a long and painful road to get to CalUMS. However,

you would never know it by his demeanor. Enthusiastic, fun

loving, and always concerned with the needs of students

and others, D.J. realizes that caring, education and profes-

sionalism are keys to the success of CalUMS. Though his

main duty at the school is recruiting, D.J. has managed to

involve himself in everything from making the morning

brew to coordinating and organizing events such as the new

student orientation, open house, SBA events and the quar-

terly student awards ceremony.

D.J. is always ready to help. Come by and say hello!
