The Feast of Corpus Christi
This week we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi – Latin for ‘the body of Christ'. The feast day honours the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. It commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, paralleling Holy Thursday commemorating Our Lord’s institution of the Eucharist. Processions on Corpus Christi to honour the Eucharist have become principal features in this celebration of this feast.
From the Principal | Mr Damien Carlton
Year 10 Subject Selection: In two weeks Year 10 students will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that allow them to explore their Senior Subject Selections. This year due to the disruptions of COVID-19 the Year 10 Senior Subject Selection Information Evening ‘Select for Success’ scheduled for the end of this month has been cancelled. All information about subjects on offer will be provided to parents and students electronically, via short videos, brochures and presentations.
Parent/Teacher Interviews: The Semester One Parent/Teacher interviews will be going ahead with extended times to allow all Years from 7-12 to be able to meet with their teachers. College Photo Day Information
The College Photo Day has been rescheduled for
Thursday 25 June, 2020, with the catch up day being on
Tuesday 30 June, 2020. This week, all students received
envelopes for ordering photos. Families
can also order online using the information
below.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no
large group photos taken. Year group photos
will be a collection of the individual portrait
photos of the students in each year group.
I remind parents of the necessity for all
students to be in full College Winter Uniform
on the day. Students whose uniform and
appearance does not meet College standards
(uniform, hair length/style, excess jewellery,
make-up etc.) will not have their photograph
taken.

Student Survey
On Thursday of this week, all students were asked to participate in a survey
designed to gather information regarding their views on a range of aspects
of College life. The survey asked students to give their opinions on aspects
such as pastoral classes, playgrounds, support people, uniform, technology
use and classroom learning. The results of the survey will be examined and
used as the basis for further focus group discussions over the coming weeks
and months.
Giving students a voice in regard to their views on aspects of College life
is important for a number of reasons. It challenges students to critically
evaluate the institutions and services with which they engage, it assists in
preparing students for life after school by providing them with experience in
participating in review and change processes, and it reassures students that
they are intelligent people whose opinions are valued and respected.
An early examination of responses indicates that students took this
opportunity seriously, and have provided information that will assist with
decision making processes in both the short and long term.

It is a NSW Government requirement that all absences from school are explained by the student's parents/carers. The easiest way to do this is to log onto the Compass Parent Portal to explain any lateness of absence with an Attendance Note. Instructions on how to do this are listed here:

TINY HABITSStudents have mentioned to me that it is a lot easier to start some new type of life-enhancing behaviour than it to keep it going. So how can we sustain new patterns of behaviour, until we’ve done them for so long they become habitual?
Melon Health suggests that one great way to help those new behaviours stick is by forming tiny habits; give it a try today.

MORE HIDDEN CONNECTIONS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGEAdapted from: The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll through the Hidden Connections of the English Language by Mark Forsyth ( 2011).Most mathematics used to be written out in full sentences, which is why the equals sign was invented by a sixteenth century Welshman, Robert Recorde. When writing a mathematical textbook, Recorde wrote:
To avoid the tedious repetition of these words: is equal to: I will set as I do often in work use, a pair of parallels, or Gemowe lines of one length, thus: =, bicause no 2 things, can be more equal.
So = is an equal sign because the two lines are of equal length. Recorde thought that the two lines of = were so similar that they were like identical twins, which is why he called them gemowe, meaning twin. Gemowe derived from the Old French gemeaus, which is the plural of gemel. This came from the Latin gemellus, which was the diminutive of Gemini (the zodiac sign represented by the twins Castor and Pollux).

This term in English, Year 7 is learning about different types of visual texts and how to analyse them, improving their visual literacy skills.
As a fun challenge, students were asked to bring in their favourite stuffed animal from home to participate in a visual techniques scavenger hunt. In small groups, students captured their stuffed animals using their mobile phones in various settings and angles around the school.
Students were then asked to showcase their findings in a presentation format, including all of the visual techniques they managed to capture on their scavenger hunt. They were then asked to choose their favourite image and recreate this image into a front cover design to be illustrators and eventually authors of their very own picture books! Some very clever designs and impressive storylines coming along. Well done Year 7!
