During last meeting in Uppsala, the board has been renewed, with the leaving of Isabel Arnaldos and Paul Moore. Thank you very much for your friendly cooperation for the past three years. Welcome to the new board members : Alejandra Perotti and Luc Bourguignon. For the first time a representative of associate members has been elected : Ian Dadour, who has always been an active contributor of the EAFE. Welcome Ian ! I would like to thank you to have elected me as the new president of the EAFE. This is a great honor for me and for the laboratory I belong to . Since its creation in 2002, the former EAFE boards worked with enthusiasm and professionalism for the promotion of forensic Entomology and the development of partnerships between scientific fields involved in forensic Entomology. The publication of the BPM was a first step, the interlab testing, presented in Bari in 2006, another one. After 7 years of activity, we can all be proud of what our association is today. I would like to continue and above all to insist in these following directions : - to propose creation of workings groups, necrophagous insects, temperature problematics, statistics, myasis .... ; - to help colleagues interested or involved in a quality control process, whatever the origin of their lab (big structure or not, private of state lab...) ; - to organize interlab testing ; - to help colleagues/students to check the quality, feasibility or relevance of an experimental project ; - to help next organizers of meeting (preparation of scientific program, call for funding or else) ; - to help colleagues in the reviewing of articles ; - to work all together in a more formal and clear manner, towards the members and associate members, showing the EAFE has reached the age of reason. We have, for example, to discuss the way of election, even if I know that it is not the funniest part of objectives, but so mandatory .... Our efforts have to be focused to establish EAFE as a significant and recognized scientific community non only within strict forensic entomological field but also outside (investigators, magistrates...). I can realize that it will be a hard task , but I am optimistic (should I ?) ! Because EAFE has increased significantly these last 7 years (35 countries, 140 members today !) and because this is our responsibility towards to the members, we need to modify the way of management. Such approach

Dear all, I hope that everybody had nice summer break !During last meeting in Uppsala, the board has been renewed, with the leaving of Isabel Arnaldos and Paul Moore.

This is a great honor for me and for the laboratory I belong to . needs an active cooperation of the whole members, with the board as driving force. Thus, each board member will have the opportunity to be responsible of a work package or specific task making the work more efficient and giving an effective utility to EAFE.The former boards spent time to make this association living (constitution, contribution, management of the website, secretary, contribution to the organization of meetings...). But EAFE is not the association of the board but the association of the whole members that need their investment too. Best wishes. Emmanuel GAUDRY

2/ Summary of Uppsala meeting Report

By Carlo P. Campobasso

The peaceful and relaxing Uppsala (Sweden), the site of the oldest University in Scandinavia where Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) lived and studied for many years, hosted the 7th EAFE annual meeting. After the intense days spent in the Neo-Renaissance Universitetshuset (University Main Building), it is time to congratulate all participants to the meeting. It was a truly international congress, four days long (from 9th to 12th

June 2009), attended by approximately 70 delegates mostly from Europe but also a really great opportunity and pleasure to meet people from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia, Kuwait, South Africa, Turkey and, USA. A total of 36 oral presentations have been divided in 7 scientific sessions and 18 poster have been displayed all dealing with a wide range of research and case studies. Worth of mentioning are the survey of pig and human cadavers by infra-red thermography performed by Martin Hall and Amoret Withaker in the Anthropological Research Facility (ARF) in Tennessee (USA), the study on the relationship between necrophagous insects and volatile organic compounds released during decomposition investigated by Helen LeBlanc (Canada) and by Frederickx et al. (Belgium) through electroantennography and, finally, the fascinating talk on the accuracy of minimum PMI estimation presented by Martin Villet (South Africa). For those interested, this last speech was just a summary of a more detailed chapter listed in a newborn scientific book edited by Jens Amendt et al., actually in press but very soon available in library. During the meeting there was enough space also for an invited lecture made by Patricia Wiltshire (UK) who went on the very exciting field of forensic botany, palynology and, mycology. Something forensic scientists and forensic entomologists have to face with deeper during their criminal investigation. The 7th EAFE annual meeting was closed by an high profile workshop on the identification of blowfly larvae organized by Krysztof Szpila and colleagues from Poland (Department of Animal Ecology). Most participants took benefits of having access to microscopes comparing directly the identification keynotes illustrated and also available in well-organized handouts.

During the meeting Emmanuel Gaudry, one of the founding members of EAFE seven years ago in Paris, has been elected the new EAFE President. A really good luck to Manu who will have the responsibility of driving us facing with the impressive development of the forensic entomology discipline. Thank You very much indeed to Jens Amendt for his efforts during the past years. Jens was an excellent and very active EAFE President, we do not miss him since he will have part in the New EAFE Board. Three years are already passed since last election process we had in Bari 2006 and it was time to renew the EAFE Board. New Board members have been nominated Alejandra Perotti (UK) and Luc Bourguignon (Belgium) who were involved in the recent past in the organization of our previous annual meetings respectively held in Brussels (5th EAFE meeting 2007) and Crete (6th EAFE meeting 2008). Ian Dadour (Australia) was also elected our first representative of the associate EAFE members. I am quite sure of the fresh breeze coming from them all with new ideas and proposals useful to EAFE. Unfortunately, the soft atmosphere we had in the unstressed Uppsala did not help the process of election.

Several remarks raised soon at the end of the election process largely discussed by the Old and New Board members. The result of such intense discussion was really constructive and will certainly provide some changes for the further development of the EAFE. Folks, that’s quite all! Get prepared for Spain 2010 where we will be hosted by Isabel Arnaldos and her colleagues of the University of Murcia (Department of Zoology).

4/ Former EAFE president word by Jens AMENDT

Dear Colleagues, I am very sure that after a very interesting and stimulating week in one of the biggest AND unstressed cities in Sweden you agree: We all appreciate that great time in Uppsala! But now everybody certainly arrived back in reality …The board is back on work as well: We have new board members now and I am very happy to hand over the position of the president to Emmanuel Gaudry, one of the founding

members of the EAFE and certainly a driving force behind the impressive development of our association. Thank you very much for taking this responsibility, Emmanuel. I also welcome our new board members Alejandra Perotti, Luc Bourguignon and Ian Dadour; the latter is our first representative of the associate EAFE members, and I am quite curious about the fresh breeze from Down Under, Ian! Getting new members does also mean that some old members leave the board: I thank Isabel Arnaldos and Paul Moore for their work and cooperation during the past three years and looking forward to 2010, when the annual EAFE meeting will take place in Murcia/Spain, organised by Isabel Arnaldos and her colleagues: EAFE rely on this support by its members. There was a diverse feedback by our members during the last weeks, discussing the framework of the Uppsala meeting in general and especially the meeting of members. You can sum up the feeling in one sentence: There was obviously too much “Amendtinedschad” and too little democracy and transparency. I apologize for that, it was never my intention. We welcome and accept these critical statements and discussed them in the board already. I find the results quite constructive and I am optimistic that this discussion stimulates the further development and structure of the EAFE. The new board has a lot of new ideas and intentions, and I am sure that we will realise and implement many of them. This is the farewell of the former president: Enjoy your summer holidays and get prepared for Spain 2010!

Jens Amendt

6/ Pr. Margharita Turchetto

Saturday 25th July 2009 at the Hospital of Padova has died Margherita Turchetto. Prof. Margherita Turchetto, born in Belluno, the 15th June 1947 graduated in biological sciences in 1971 and in 1980, became Associated Professor of Zoology at the University of Padova.

Margherita Turchetto initially carried out studies on the soil and litter fauna, on the inhibitory effects of pesticides and insecticides on the life cycle of the insects, other invertebrate and vertebrate and on some neurochemical mediators of Diptera. Since 1995 she has been focusing on Forensic entomology and on the effects of the “global warming” on insect’s distribution. She was the first Entomologist to both introduce and apply the Forensic Entomology in North-Eastern Italy; she was particularly interested in the new challenges of this discipline: most specifically those related to climate change and globalization. She was a member of the “Unione Zoologica Italiana” (UZI), the “Società Italiana di Entomologia” (SIE), the “Società Italiana di Parassitologia” (SOIPA), the “World Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine” (WAHVM), the “European Association of Forensic Entomology” (EAFE) and she was one of the founder of the “Gruppo Italiano per l’Entomologia Forense” (GIEF).

All the people that met Margherita will remember a woman of great culture, a good teacher, a very good cock, and an open-minded person with who it was a real pleasure to talk about anything: Science, History, Politics, Cuisine, Mountain, Tradition, Darwin, Linneaus, etc, etc, etc…

A new organization of the website will be proposed before the end of the year. It is the moment to improve the links between members. It is why it was proposed during Uppsala meeting to include in the member’s pages 2 or 3 keywords dealing with your activity or your speciality. Feel free to send me some as soon as possible.

Robert Nash (Ir.) continues to propose us some interesting links about Insect identification or classification. During Uppsala meeting, Krysztof Szpila (Poland) proposed a larval Calliphoridae identification workshop,

The documentation is now available in the “member’s only” part of the website.

During all the year members proposed some forensic entomological papers. This list is not, of course, complete, so you are free (and welcome !) to send me the references about your 2009’s papers.
