Grand Knight’s Report: Brother Knights, we have reached the end of summer. Gone away for the year is the late evening sun. Vacations are over. The kids are going back to school. The weather is turning crisper. While we never really take the summer off, it is now time for our council to get busy. There are many opportunities coming up to server your council. Look to the newsletter each month. Look to the calendar on the council website or maybe even sync your device(s) to it. Watch for at least one more event to help your council this year than you did last year. Please note, however, that we are still waiting on the parish office to give our calendar final approval, so some understanding and flexibility in dates is required of us all. September starts with the celebration of Labor Day. It is a day set aside for the laborer in us and all around us. I encourage you to take this day with your families and think of St. Joseph the Worker this Labor Day. He gives us the example of a strong work ethic who makes his family the priority in his life. We look to St. Joseph when we put in a day’s work for a day’s wage then go home to serve our families. We then lead our families in charity and community that we form together. So please, have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings and events!

Knight of the Month As you will recall, we held an Admissions Degree in lieu of our regularly scheduled August Business Meeting. As a result, we did not have our regular Knight of the Month presentation. Instead, we had the opportunity for an even more meaningful presentation to four fine gentlemen joining our council. Our new members were, therefore, our Knights of the Month for August. Please join me in welcoming our newest members and make sure to introduce yourself if you encounter them at our events:

Christopher Asselta Mark Asselta Michael Gorostiza James Williams

Membership Director Joe Badowski 609-332-7241, [email protected] Our annual recruitment drive is scheduled for the weekend of October 5th and 6th. We must continue to recruit, engage, and retain new members if we are to continue the good works of our Order. St. Pope John Paul II called the Knights of Columbus the “right arm of the church.” Our charitable donations and volunteer hours are unparalleled. But if we do not bring in new members, our growth will become stagnant and then become degradation. To help with the drive, contact Joe Badowski. All members can participate in the recruitment drive. Even if you cannot be at Mass, you can ask a friend or family member to join. And joining has never been easier. Sign up and become a member online by clicking the link on our homepage at http://www.moorestownknights.org. On top of growing our own order, we have an exciting incentive from State! Supreme has given State $7000 to award as they see fit, and State Membership Director, Chris Duffett, has certainly figured out how to use it! The following schedule will be used to determine which councils will win $500 at a time to be used in any way! Let’s see what we can do to win!

1. $500 to the Council in each of the 5 Diocese that brings in the most new members (min of 5) between 7/1/19 and 12/31/19........Total – $2500

2. $500 to the Council in each of the 5 Diocese that brings in the most new members (min of 5)

between 1/1/20 and 6/30/20........Total – $2500

3. An additional $500 to the Council that brings in the most new members for the year (min 5) between 7/1/19 and 6/30/20

4. $500 to the District Deputy with the highest percent increase in the Jurisdiction over last year

between 7/1/19 and 6/30/20. In order to qualify, the District must have at least 20 new members and every Active Council in the district must record at least 1 new member. Let’s do our part to help Butch win!

5. $100 to the member in each of the 5 Diocese who brings in the most new members (min 5)

between 7/1/19 and 12/31/19.............Total – $500

6. $100 to the member in each of the 5 Diocese who brings in the most new members (min 5) between 1/1/20 and 6/30/20.............Total – $500

Tiebreakers: For 1, 2, & 3 – Best % increase over last year For 5 & 6 – Whoever gets to the last new member 1st (as recorded by Supreme per the Form 100). For example – if John & Joe bring in 10 new members each, and John's 10th member is recorded on 6/1/20 and Joe's is recorded on 6/15/20, John would be the winner. No tiebreaker for the DD's. They would split the $500.00. If no Council or individual member reaches 5 new members, the prize money rolls over to the next period. OFFICERS INSTALLATION AND PAST GRAND KNIGHTS DINNER Our official Installation of Officers ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 28th, following the 5pm Mass in the main Church. Our new Worthy District Deputy, Butch Paramore will preside over the event. All Council officers are expected to attend. You are encouraged to bring your families as well. The ceremony lasts just a few minutes but is a poignant and powerful recognition of your desire to serve and your commitment to the Council. All council members and their families are also invited. Please join us and hold your council officers to the promises we make! Following the Installation of Officers, we will move over to the school cafeteria to honor our Past Grand Knights Dinner. Dinner will include food from Abbruzzi & Giunta’s. While we honor all Past Grand Knights, all of whom are invited to attend, our keynote honoree will be our immediate Past Grand Knight George Tower. Father Chris and Father Jack have confirmed that they will join us as well as our District Deputy Butch Paramore and Former District Deputy John Sherry. John Sherry will provide a review of George’s tenure as Grand Knight. Please join us in thanking George for his tireless service to our council! See the attached RSVP form. Please RSVP by September 20th. We will also need volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up. Please help us out in any way you can! Faith Activities Report Deacon Tom Begley 856-767-1686, [email protected] STATE COUNCIL RETREAT The State Council Retreat will be held October 18-20 at the San Alfonso Retreat House in West Long Branch, NJ. 12 DAYS OF GIVING AT IRON HILL BREWERY As reported last month, “Christmas in July” was held on July 16 at the Iron Hill Brewery in Maple Shade. The event was a wonderful night of Brotherhood, community spirit and social interaction. Proceeds from the evening totaled $308.55 which were given to Options for Women, a local community crisis pregnancy center. This event was sponsored by the ownership of the Iron Hill Brewery. We are most appreciative to them for this wonderful opportunity to support Options. Arrangements are being coordinated with the Iron Hill Brewery Management representatives to hold another event in the Fall at the Brewery to benefit another of our charitable organizations. Stay tuned for details. STEAKS AND STOGIES On August 22nd, we joined our Brother Knights in Tabernacle for an evening of brotherhood and fraternity for their annual Steaks and Stogies event. It was a simple event of outdoor fun such as cornhole, Night at the Races, football, and even axe throwing – we all still have our feet! We enjoyed good food, good cigars, for those of us who were interested, and great conversation with friends and family. Consider joining us next year and bring a friend! SEND A HERO HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Can you believe Christmas is just a few months away? Maybe you’ve already started planning or maybe you’re not even thinking about it yet. I can tell you that the men and women who defend our country are thinking about it. Many our brave military do not get to be with their families for Christmas because of their assignments. But you can help change that for some. For the past several years, the Trenton Diocesan Federation of the Knights of Columbus has led the Send a Hero Home for the Holidays campaign. This program covers the travel costs for military stationed in New Jersey to go home and be with their loved ones for the holidays. Thanks to this statewide effort last year, 145 members from across all military branches benefited from this campaign. We anticipate even more requests this year. You can help by making a free will donation. Knights will, tentatively, be outside after all Masses on September 14th and 15th. Cash and checks will be accepted. Checks should be made out to “K of C Council 1082”. Please write “Hero” on the memo line. You can also mail your check to George Tower, 40 Revere Ave, Moorestown, NJ 08057. Please sign up to help collect donations. You can sign up at our September business meeting or by contacting George Tower at 609-304-2743 or [email protected]. NEW EYES FOR THE NEEDY / USED STAMPS FOR VETERANS We are always collecting eyeglasses for the needy and used postage stamps for our veterans. Donations may be given to one of our ushers at Mass; please ask that they be given to a member of the Knights and bring them to a Business Meeting. We are planning to set up a permanent collection bin like we previously had in the Sacred Heart Room. Thanks to Past Grand Knight Angelo Sanelli for his leadership and dedication to this program. Life Activities Report Director Dave Lyzinski 630-209-0166, [email protected] Look out for activities under the umbrella of Life later this Columbian Year, including the Baby Bottle Drive (January) and Roses for Life (March). Additional activities that highlight our dedication to defense of life at all stages will be announced soon!

RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES The NJ Physician Assisted Suicide bill A1504/S1072. The assisted suicide bill, the Aid in Dying for Terminally Ill Act was signed by Governor Murphy. Please note: A committee has started a petition to overturn this bill. While the bill was briefly halted in the courts, the halt has been removed. This law is looking to go to the State Supreme Court. NJ Senate Bill S3804 was amended on Thursday, June 27, 2019 to read identical to Assembly Bill A5508 which already had passed the Assembly. S3804/A5508 would eliminate the Religious Employer Exemption on contraceptives. In other words, the bill removes the religious exemption for churches, Christian schools, Catholic hospitals and other faith-based ministries, by forcing them to pay for abortion inducing drugs in their insurance plans, against their deeply held religious beliefs. While S3804 still is not law, the probability of it being posted for a vote at the next legislative session is high. We will need to continue to work with Senators to amend S3804 to retain the Religious Employer Exemption on healthcare programs covering contraceptives and abortion causing drugs. The key Senators for us are: Pou, Ruiz, Sarlo and Sweeney – in addition to any Senator you might know. Continue prayers for our Holy Father and our Holy Catholic Church in light of recent issues involving Church Hierarchy and priest scandal. Prayer Vigil Outside Abortion Facilities: One small way of taking action is to volunteer an hour or two each week with your local “prayer warriors” who hold vigils outside of local abortion facilities. Opposition Grows Against Objectionable Required Reading in NJ High School: A bill that requires New Jersey middle school and high school students to be taught the political, economic and social contributions of notable lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people throughout history was signed into law this month by Gov. Phil Murphy. The bill, the second of its kind in the U.S., was passed mostly along party lines in the state Senate and Assembly, with Democrats supporting it and Republicans opposing it. For those for whom the issue is new, this requirement does NOT apply to nonpublic schools. The case against the law is made here by Len Deo, founder and president of NJ Family First. The opposing view is presented by Christian Fuscarino, executive director of Garden State Equality. Pray the rosary every day for peace in our country and around the world.
