Deputy Principal’s message
Welcome to the 2020 School Year I would like to say hello to all the students, parents and carers of Barham and the surrounding areas. I have recently arrived in Barham and have had many friendly discussions about the rural community and the great areas to enjoy in the future with staff and community members.
I am happy for parents/carers to contact me at the school in any matters relating to your child’s concerns. Please feel free to make an appointment for longer discussions if required.
It was great to meet some new parents at both the Year 7 Welcome BBQ on Monday and the school Swimming Carnival on Thursday night last week. Both events were a success and all who attended enjoyed themselves.
My wife and I will be getting involved as helpers with the Twin Towns Triathlon this weekend so please say hello if you see me about. Have a great year!
Please note our Principal’s report will be contained in our next newsletter.

2020 Ambulance cover information
At the end of last year the school was informed that students would need their own ambulance cover for excursions interstate. We have now been informed that our students will still be covered by a Group Cover scheme which is organised by the Department of Education for 2020.
This scheme, managed by the NSW Ambulance, provides assurance that any student enrolled at a NSW public school, who has an accident or falls ill whilst at school or on an organised school excursion or activity, and requires the ambulance service, will have this cost met through the scheme.
VACCINATIONS All students in Years 7 and 10 will have their first round of vaccinations on 5/3/20.
The next vaccinations for these students will occur on 17th September.
Forms were sent home
this week.

TAS/Agriculture Report
The TAS faculty have been busy getting ready for the new school year. This year we welcome Mr Mark Richards back to Barham High School. He has already done some fantastic work cleaning out our workshops and ensuring all of the tools and machinery are in good working condition for the year. Mr Richards will be assisted in Industrial Arts by our Relieving Deputy Principal Mr Chris Metcalfe, and he and Mr Richards have already begun planning for some great projects for the year ahead. Our Hospitality teacher Miss McDonnell has started the year full of energy with her students already in the kitchens creating culinary delights. While our Stages 5 and 6 Primary Industries students have been busy working with Mrs Martin caring for our sheep and assessing our Sorghum.

Our Year 7 students will be introduced to ALARM this term. ALARM is a learning and responding matrix that students call apply across a range of subjects from Year 7 through to Year 12 to organise their ideas and scaffold their responses. The Stage 4 Matrix is pictured below.
1. Keep reading aloud to your kids 2. Choose books they like 3. Ask questions about what they are
reading at school 4. Limit access to electronics 5. Make time and space to read 6. Be a role model (children of all ages
will mimic those around them) https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-19/five-ways-to-transform-your-teenager-into-an-avid-bookworm/9458276
In English Year 8 have started the year with a study of classic literature. Students will be studying one novel as a class and have chosen a second text of their own interest to read.
The Stage 4 History students have been learning about historical concepts and investigating the past using a range of historical sources. They have also been studying ancient societies and looking at archaeological information to inform their understanding of the past.

Science/PDHPE/Careers Report
Science Faculty We are fortunate to have two new staff members teaching Science classes this year. Mr Osborne is teaching Year 7, some Year 8, Stage 5, Year 11 Biology and Yr 11 Chemistry while Ms Smith has Year 11 Investigating Science and Year 12 Chemistry. They have settled in nicely and displayed a shared passion for Science and a willingness to engage our students and ignite their curiosity about the world around them. Mrs Martin and Mrs Farrant complete the Science staff team and we are all looking forward to another great year at BHS.
Year 7 Year 7 are very quickly becoming familiar with the laboratory and have already braved the task of lighting a Bunsen burner. They are settling in nicely, learning all about the equipment they will use and will get the opportunity to show off this in their practical assessment later this term.
Year 8 Year 8 are currently engaging with geology. They are covering the content that they will refer to on their excursion to the South Coast of Victoria in a few weeks time. This excursion will run from the 11-13th March and the booklet that students complete during the trip forms
part of their assessment for this term. An initial information note was included in their report envelope at the end of last year, but spares can be obtained from the front office. Final costings are being worked out and permission notes will be distributed in the coming week. We do request a $100 deposit by the end of next week to secure your child’s attendance. If you have any queries regarding this excursion, please contact the school.
Stage 5
Stage 5 are tackling an electricity unit first up this year and have already demonstrated competence in making simple series and parallel circuits. This knowledge and these skills will be put to the test however when they have to construct a ‘Shoe Box’ circuit for their assessment task this term. More information to come.
HSC Chemistry The HSC Chemistry class are off to CSU Wagga campus next week to conduct some mandatory practicals in their state-of-the-art laboratories. The students are really looking forward to this opportunity and we hope they make the most of it.

Senior Science All other senior science classes are wasting no time, engaging in hands-on activities and valuable class discussions to consolidate their knowledge and understanding. We encourage them to maintain their enthusiasm and positive work ethic as the term progresses.
Careers Report
Year 9 Year 9 have started their first unit called “All About Me” which aims to explore their interests, passions, beliefs, values, and skills that will help them have a better understanding of themselves and their career exploration. Year 10 are working on the safe@work modules in preparation for work experience which is happening early Term 2.
Year 10 Year 10 students need to start thinking about places they might like to go to for work experience and engage with business owners to see if they can complete their work experience with them.
Year 12 Year 12 started the year with some insightful tips from past Year 12 students for their final year of school and post-school journey.
The Truth Project On Thursday 12 March, all students from Years 10-12 will be involved in “The Truth Project”; where a number of guest speakers will present interactive workshops that focus on assisting students and their decision making for their post-school journey. Our school registered its interest for this amazing opportunity and we are very grateful that our school was selected. We look forward to being involved in this fantastic experience that has never before been at Barham High School, so please mark this date in your calendar!

PDHPE Report
BHS Swimming Carnival On Thursday evening, the 13th of February, Barham High School held its annual twilight swimming carnival at the Koondrook Pool. The weather was fit for the occasion and the participation and enthusiasm was on full display, particularly throughout our compulsory events. It has been great to see every student have access to several events that they feel confident in and enjoy participating in. Well done to all of the students that attended and were involved!
We did not see any records broken this year, but there were several students within one or two seconds, so with another season of training, I’m confident we will see some long standing records tumble!
Age Champions Our age champions all swam incredibly well on the night and are worthy recipients in their age group. They are as follows:
12 year boys: Logan Faul
13 year boys: Xavier Leonard
13 year girls: Ruby Lake
14 year boys: Will Lake
14 year girls: Brooke Boyd
15 year boys: Jack Lake
15 year girls: Lily Molin
16 year boys: Josh McMahon
16 year girls: Kirby Bott
17+ boys: Leonard McClay
17+ girls: Claudia Short
Champion House The big winner on the night, the champion house, was Barimo. It was an incredibly close result this year, with just 56 points separating 1st and 3rd.
A massive thank you to the parents, volunteers, pool committee, high school staff and the students for yet another successful swimming carnival. We look forward to your support and continued enthusiasm at term 2’s Athletics Carnival.

Smart Device Safety Tips
With so many smart devices now available, it is more important than ever for you to be
monitoring your children’s safety when online.
Some smart devices include:
•Computer •Laptop •Mobile phone
•Google Home •Smart Watch •Smart TV
1. Talk openly with your child about their online activity As soon as your child begins using the internet talk to them about what sites they are
using – decide what is appropriate for yourself and your family. Remind them that what
they post on the internet is not private.
2. Keep devices where you can see them
You can set your device to ‘forget Wi-Fi password’ so your children have to ask for the
password and you will know when they are online. Come to an agreement that devices
cannot be used in bedrooms.
3. Know your parental controls
The SafeSearch Filters feature on Google will block sites with inappropriate content. To
turn it on, go to Settings/SafeSearch Filters. Paid options are available for better
protection.
4. Teach your children to keep their location private
Public location is available on almost every app, even when you take a photo on your
phone it stores the data of where and when it was taken. Location can be turned off by
going to settings, then privacy, then location services.
