A Message from the Associate Dean Dear Students, This weekend, we will begin welcoming our incoming class of 2009AB for the first of their orientation week- ends. You may remember your own emotions during those first weekends on campus, and the excitement, anticipa- tion, and maybe even a little anxiety, that went with them. Working with EMBA's Marketing and Admissions team, led by Sid Jackson, it is my job to make sure that each new class is the best class ever. As students, many of you have helped us market the EMBA program to prospective students, formally, as members of the Hermes Society or informally, among your co-workers or friends. You have also helped us make improvements in the Program to benefit future students. These combined efforts to attract the best and brightest students ultimately strengthen our shared asset - the Columbia MBA - and will make the difference in achieving our goal to be the undisputed leader in the marketplace. I would like to provide some statistics as a brief introduction to these 130 new students. Collectively, they speak 31 different languages and 21% are internation- al citizens. Their average age is 32 and 47% are married. We are pleased that women make up 29%, which represents an increase. Additionally we also saw an 11% increase in overall applications Fifteen companies sponsored more than one student, with Morgan Stanley, IBM and Ernst & Young leading the pack. Their professional backgrounds are as varied as your own - ranging from advertising to accounting and financial services to non-profit and military. They are also passionate about causes - from the environment to women's issues to men- toring disadvantaged youth. And, in terms of hobbies, they are star college ath- letes, avid Scuba divers, martial artists, adventure seekers who have trekked remote regions of the world and marathon runners (including one Olympic Trials Qualifier). I hope you will make a point to meet and welcome these students during their first weekend on campus, September 28 and 29. We will host a more formal wel- come and networking event for the entire EMBA community after class on Friday, October 12. Good luck on exams, and enjoy the rest of summer!
