19 October 2015

From the Acting Principal

Welcome to Week 3, Term 4!

How quickly - in the rhythm of so much life and learning

and activity - Term 4 at OAGS continues to go!

And so this coming week will carry all of that great

energy and meaning and opportunity for all of our

students, with the continuing HSC (and our prayers very

much set on all of our students involved), all the

wonderfully creative preparations for Primary Plus on 27th

October, Kindergarten 2016 Orientation, the high quality

teaching and learning programs and delivery of those

programs, that take place every day in every classroom

Transition to Year 12 etc, etc!

It is this wonderful mixture of high quality teaching and

learning – alongside that daily lived-out commitment

from all Staff at OAGS to providing ‘extra mile’

opportunities for all of our students – that makes OAGS

just such a special school.

It is a school in which each student is known,

appreciated and encouraged to find their element –

that place of learning and being where each child is

given that uniquely ‘me shaped’ space in which to day

by day become their fullest potential self.

This is the inclusive mission heart of OAGS; to provide a

living and learning and being space in which every

student is given that uniquely shaped opportunity to

become their very best selves. This, I believe, is the first gift from Orange Anglican Grammar

School to all of its students and families.

And it’s so much this quality of care and love and joy - this day by day expression of a

profound professional and relational commitment to each child and young person - that really

does make every day at OAGS such a special, rewarding, adventure!

Every blessing!

Car Park Incident

Does anyone have any information regarding a charcoal Toyota Prado being hit and/or

scratched in the Administration carpark on Friday? If you saw anything or can provide any

information about this, please contact the front office. The car has damage across every

panel on the passenger side and there was no note claiming responsibility. Thank you.

Last week’s disco was a huge success, with all students having a great time. The theme of

“Fluoro Fun” certainly lived up to its name and we all had to wear sunglasses.

Don’t forget tickets are on sale for Primary Plus! We are looking forward to performing at the

Civic Theatre!

Have a great week!

Woollies card swaps have been a success and I will continue to hold swap sessions until the

demand is over.

All students who completed the 2015 PRC are invited to attend a special morning tea on

Tuesday 20th October. This will be held during normal Recess time in the Media Centre. A small

note will be sent home to inform parents and guardians. If your child has special dietary

requirements Ms Taylor MUST be informed via a note or email.

The special pizza lunch will be held at a later date for Mr Wilson’s class.

We are currently looking for someone to be a Book club volunteer for 2016. If this sounds like

you, please enquire at Administration.

Primary Plus Concert

Tuesday, 27th October, Orange Civic

Theatre

6.45pm

The rationale behind the Primary Plus Concert is to give all interested parties – parents, relatives

and friends – the opportunity to see what students have achieved in the Performing Arts this

year. We have chosen to have the concert at the Civic Theatre because, apart from the

practicality of fitting everyone in, it gives that extra dimension to performance from which the

students so greatly benefit.

Page 3: NEWSLETTER - s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.coms3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/resources.farm1... · It’s a Date Week 3 Tuesday 20 October – Premier’s Reading Challenge Morning

The following groups will be performing at the concert:

Dance: Year 1 Dance, Year 2 Dance, Stage 2 Dance, Stage 3 Dance

Drama: Bwalla the Hunter 2M, Year 6 special presentation, Kindergarten presentation

Music: Stage 1 Choir, Stage 2 Choir, Stage 3 Choir, Beginner Band, Intermediate Band, Reed

Choir, Flute Choir, Brass Choir, String Ensemble.

There will be a full day rehearsal at school on Monday 26th October and a rehearsal in the

Theatre on Tuesday 27th October from 9.30-2.30pm. Children will have normal before and after

school arrangements, and will be transported to and from school, and the Theatre, by bus. A

permission note has gone home. Please complete and return to your classroom teacher.

Dress for the evening will be full summer uniform, without jumpers. Students requiring dance or

other costuming will be informed directly by Mrs Clancy for dance and Mr Macleay for Bwalla

the Hunter. There will be a number of secondary students in attendance on the night to help

with changing students into and out of dance costumes.

Parents are to leave students at the Stage door by 6.30pm, and are to collect from there at

the conclusion of the concert.

Tickets for the concert went on sale Friday 16th October, and are available through TICKETEK at

the Civic Theatre at a cost of $10 adult, $6 student (4-17 years), $8 concession, $28 family of

any combination of 4. Please do not buy a ticket for any child who is performing, as all

students will remain behind the scenes until the conclusion of the concert.

Secondary News

Welcome to Week 3, Term 4! This term is moving at a rapid rate with our students involved in

many events and excursions. Year 8 have just returned from a Geography field trip to Taronga

Zoo, Dubbo, while this week the Stage 5 Agriculture students will travel to Cowra for the “Cows

Create Careers” award lunch. Best of luck to our students in this event. The HSC continues this

week with examinations for Biology, English Extension 1, Agriculture, Mathematics,

Mathematics General 2 and Chemistry. A busy time for these students.

A reminder that Student, Parent and Teacher interviews for students in Years 7-11 are

scheduled for Monday 26th October between 3:30 - 7:30pm in the Media Centre. If you did

not receive an email from the School, the link can be found here.

As Years 7 -10 approach their Yearly Examinations, I am reminded of a quote from Aristotle.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act, but a habit.” Many

students reflecting upon their Half Yearly Reports set themselves a goal of improving their

examination marks. An admirable goal but a goal that is made of many small steps. This

improvement can only come about through consistent effort in all that is undertaken prior to

the examinations, rather than a last minute dash to cram the night before.

Enjoy your week.

Mathematics Peer Tutoring

Last week the Secondary Mathematics Peer Tutoring Program commenced. Students from

Years 7 and 8 were paired with Year 11 Mathematics students. The first session involved

identifying areas of Mathematics in which students would like to improve. Students have been

sent some work to be completed by this week’s session which will be held on Wednesday 21st

October during Pastoral Care.

HSC Mathematics

Please keep Year 12 in your thoughts and prayers this week as they complete their

Mathematics and General Mathematics examinations. Students have been working extremely

hard in preparation and on behalf of the Mathematics department, I would like to wish them

all the very best.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo Excursion

As part of the Stage 4 Geography

course, last week Year 8 went to

Taronga Western Plains Zoo in

Dubbo to learn more about

threatened habitats and in

particular, threatened animal

species. The students had a

fantastic day which commenced at

the Education Centre with a

workshop that gave students the

opportunity to be hands on and

met some of the Zoo’s special

animals. They then moved onto

hear talks on the plight of the hippopotamus, elephant, tiger, otter and the very loud

siamangs. Throughout the day the students demonstrated a great deal of enthusiasm, energy

and engagement which was great to see. Special thanks to Mr Dawes for helping on the day.

Active Citizenship and the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons – 26th

September 2015

In Year 8 HSIE we have been looking at global citizenship and being active citizens. On

Thursday at assembly, Year 8 made a presentation to raise awareness of “The International

Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons” and planted sunflower seeds to highlight the

significance of the day.

ASX Sharemarket Game

Over the past three months, students from Year 8 to Year 10 have been participating in the

ASX Sharemarket game. The ASX Sharemarket game is a great way for students to develop

their knowledge about investing in the sharemarket and the impact of world events on

economic matters. The leading syndicates at this stage are “Giggle and Hoot”, followed

closely by “Mr Man”. This semester’s game concludes 28th October 2015.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Australia

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Australia is an enriching program that challenges

young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to participate in a number of activities over a

set length of time. Participation is entirely voluntary and is structured so young people can

design their own unique program centred on their interests and passions.

Much Ado About Shakespeare

And what a to do . . . students participated in activities ranging from creating Kahoots quizzes

about Shakespeare, genuine Elizabethan recipes in cooking, Elizabethan arts and crafts and

scene painting as well as doing drama in play building and Shakespearean insults. After lunch

Years 5 and 6 joined the Secondary School for the Bell Shakespeare players performance of

‘Midsummer Madness’ - an adapted version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was a fantastic,

lively and energetic performance that had the students enthralled. The Players were also

impressed by the range and depth of questions our students asked.

The students and staff were invited to dress up and there were some impressive costumes;

prizes as judged by Mr Peterson included Romeo and Juliet’s Gravestones, their Bed and

Cleopatra. Thanks to all the staff who ran activities and supervised as well as to the students for

their positive attitude for the day.

HSC English

The “best up first” HSC English (Advanced & Standard) examinations were held last Monday

and Tuesday. The exams were good and certainly allowed the students to show what they

know. Extension 1 English is this week. All the best to Harriet for her last English exam.
