Our time networking with these schools is invaluable as we all share best practices across the states. This gathering focused on building community partnerships with schools and we saw some fantastic ideas and programs that we will explore with Governing Council and the wider community. Our students also shared the journey of building the strong relationship we have with the Rotary Club of Prospect. This relationship has been mutually beneficial and has given us access to some fantastic mentors for our Lego League teams. We look forward to expanding our networks with them. We are still attracting many interstate visitors to come and see our STEM programs and our high level student agency in learning. We have another NSW group of schools visiting early next term. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education (2005). From 2018, this data will be used as the basis for national funding. The NCCD involves the collection of; the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students the level of adjustment provided to students student’s type of disability if known Under the model the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions. If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information will be included in this year’s data collection. Last week we spent 2 days with our partner schools from NSW, VIC and SA to explore community partnerships with Social Ventures Australia.

Spanish immersion Day On Wednesday 29th of May, fifteen of our students

from Studios 11, 12, 13 and 14 participated in the

‘2019 Junior Conference: Por Amor al Medio

Ambiente’ (For the Love of the Environment). It was

a day to engage students in an important topic of

concern in our society – Climate Change!

The conference was organised by the Spanish

Teachers Association of South Australia (STASA) and

was conducted mostly in Spanish. It consisted of a

number of workshops in which students could learn

about climate change in a fun and interactive way by

exchanging information, expressing and explaining

ideas, developing culture understanding, performing,

and practising their language skills.

The conference had two guest speakers. Tom

Webster, a student from Marryatville High School and

representative of School Strike 4 Climate, and Laura

Carrington, a Spanish language teacher who

introduced the topic of Climate Change and led

students in a discussion. There was a bingo workshop

and one titled ‘get to know your neighbour’ in which

students from different schools mingled together.

The conference concluded by learning the song

"Quiero Vivir Mejor" (I Want to Live Better) and the

dance "El Planera hay que Salvar" (The Planet Needs

Saving) in celebration of World Environmental Day on

the 5th of June.

We had the opportunity to try different Spanish

‘tapas’. For morning tea we enjoyed a delicious hot

chocolate, fruit and ‘pan de yuca’ (cassava bread).

For lunch there was ‘tortilla española’ (Spanish

omelet), ‘pisto’ (ratatouille) , ‘arroz con leche’ (rice

pudding) and ‘membrillo’ (quince marmalade) for

lunch.

This conference was a great opportunity for our

students to practise their Spanish skills, to meet other

students who are studying the same language in

Adelaide and to build their confidence by working

outside their comfort zone. Thanks to all the students

who participated in the event, and especially to

Victoria Kent who came along to the excursion.

We had a

great day!

STEM Ambassador’s Day On Monday 3rd May Dineth and Amy, along with Casey, attended the STEM Ambassador Connection Day at Adelaide Oval. It was a chance for the new 2019 Ambassadors and some previous Ambassadors to get together from all across South Australia. Students and staff were able to mingle and share some of the projects that partnerships and schools had been working on over the last 12-18 months. Some of the projects involved:

designing a flood gate after their town had had a severe flood in 2016 in Nurioopta

designing, coding and 3D printing a moisture sensor to use in their school garden (from a drought affected school)

designing and building new playgrounds, with an indigenous connection, at the Naracoorte Caves.

We were able to share with our table the work we had been doing as part of being a STEM Lead School, including our Kids Teaching STEM conferences and our work with SVA and changing STEM practices, including student voice and co-design at our partnership schools. We also heard from a professor from Flinder's University, who talked about the importance of future generations of students becoming specialists in being collaborative and creative, not necessarily specialists in one single area. It really fit with the STEM qualities we consider important here at Prospect North. It was a great day! In the coming school holidays Amy and Dineth will be attending a STEM camp for 5 days, where they will have many opportunities to learn and experience STEM learning in different ways.

Congratulations Congratulations goes to Jenna, who has been selected to host an entire Festival of Music concert at the Adelaide Festival Theatre. This is a highly sought after position that many students across the state apply for. It requires outstanding public speaking skills, and the courage and confidence to speak in front of a very large crowd of people. We are very proud of your success and know that you will represent Prospect North Primary school at the highest level. Well done to Tina and James, the ministers for Building School Communities, who presented our involvement in the Way2Go program to the governing council this week. They spoke in a very confident manner and gained the support from the council. Thank you for your outstanding efforts!

Welcome Simon Linke We are privileged to have Simon Linke volunteering at our school every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Simon has received an Order of Australia medal for his extensive work with schools and volunteering over the last 25 years. The picture shows Simon reading to a group of junior primary students that meet him in the library once a week. He gives us and our students an incredibly positive outlook and perseverance to succeed beyond adversity. He is gifted at building caring and respectful relationships with children. We appreciate the valuable contribution he has already made to the culture of our school community.

Learning in Year 2/3 classes Over the past 2 terms, all the year 2/3 classes have been working on learning about living and non-living things. During our immersion phase, students went on an excursion to Alberton Primary and the Adelaide Botanic gardens. Once back at school they also learnt about different characteristics of animals and their life cycles. Students have now synthesised their learning and are onto the ideation phase where they have designed a prototype answering the question ‘How might we design a play space that encourages native animals to come to Prospect North Primary School?’ Students have practiced giving each other feedback and feedforward on their designs using the language ‘I like the way you’ and ‘even better if’ and have incorporated this feedback into a second design. They are currently creating 3D prototypes of their designs.

STUDENT ACRYLIC PAINTING CELEBRATING

RECONCILIATION WEEK 2019

‘Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage’

In this painting students have represented Australia, the

land in which we live, with a green and blue abstract background. Painted footprints of students were then added to represent the wider Australian community. Finally, the dots were painted in the six colours of the Olympic flag which are the colours that appear on all

national flags of the world. The dots also indicate movement as we ‘Walk Together with Courage’.
