PRESIDENT’S REPORT: How time flies, my year as your President has come to an

end. There are so many good things that have happened throughout the year and so many

good people to thank for their time and support.

Many wonderful day trips and a few fantastic extended breaks thanks to Garry and

Lynne. Places if not for them I probably would not have got to. Who could forget

Yarrawonga, Bright and Beechworth – what a trip. Here I must also thank the team from

the Blue Bus – they have gone a long way to make our day trips enjoyable.

Our Friendship Lunches – a great way to get to know new members.

Our wonderful team of ladies providing those yummie morning teas. The back up boys

pouring the teas and coffee.

Our Committee Team that has worked hard and has resulted in a welcome number of

new members.

To Ian and Lesley our technical team who have strived to improve our sound, visual,

digital, Web and Facebook sites. After a few teething problems I think the technology

is starting to work.

Theatre shows, some beauties throughout the year. Chicago, Aladdin, Muriel’s

Wedding and the Jersey Boys – to name a few plus the local production of The Boy

from Oz. All very enjoyable.

Great Guest Speakers – thanks to Ian.

We have also lost a few of our members throughout the year namely – Lou Grimshaw,

Bob Christie, Tom Keid, Lynne Warwick and just recently Noel Thorburn. We will

remember them for their friendship and their dedication to this Club.

If I have missed anyone, my apologies, but most of all I must thank you the members

who have made my term enjoyable.

So I hand over the reins to the New President and Committee and wish them the best

for 2020.

MEMBERSHIP FEES: Membership Fees are now due. Cost is $25.00 per person for

the Year.

PROFILE INTERVIEW: Our first Lady President,

Gloria Bowness, was our Profile Speaker this month,

being interviewed by Lesley Johnson. Gloria is a

Brisbane girl and the eldest of seven children. She

fondly remembers picnicking at the Capalaba

Tingalpa Creek in crystal clear water as a child. Gloria

worked in the office at McDonnell & East and then

joined the Public Service. She met her husband

Graeme at a 21st birthday party and with his career in

TAFE they lived in many places including Ipswich,

Townsville and Maryborough which Gloria said was a great place to bring up the family.

Gloria said her role model in life was her mother who managed to bring up the seven

children through trying times.

Don McFadyen will be interviewed at the March meeting.

THEATRE OUTINGS: Neil Lega will be organising theatre bookings at the Lyric

Theatre and Savoyards, the local Theatre Productions. There are some good productions

on the Savoyards agenda for this year. Neil will advise the members of any bookings at

the meetings and details will also be reported in the newsletters.

GUEST SPEAKER: Vicki Meyer, the Project Co-ordinator from Volunteer

Queensland was our Guest Speaker for February. We all know how important our

volunteer force is within our communities with a staggering 714000 in Queensland

alone. Not only are they valued highly in the organisations they assist but the volunteers

also enjoy the benefits of meeting new people,

learning new skills and giving back to the

community. By going along to the Wynnum

Volunteer Hub you can find the right volunteering

job to suit your needs as well as programs to learn

basic digital skills. They are open Thursday 9am to

12pm at the Wynnum Community Centre, Room

107, 105 Florence Street. Phone 30027600.

There will be no Guest Speaker at our March

meeting due to the AGM.

INDUCTIONS AT THE FEBRUARY MEETING: We welcomed 5 new members

to our Club at the February Meeting – Annie Warren, May Ponzo, Sian and Roy Pyke

and John Carlyon. Our President, Neil Lega presented each of them with a Certificate,

copy of the Constitution and their Badge. May they all experience fellowship, fun and

friendship in keeping with the Probus tradition.

WELFARE: We are thinking of all those members who are unwell at this time. The

following members have experienced health issues recently.

Marell Thornton had a fall and was taken to hospital. She bruised her face and cracked

her tooth and was unable to attend Probus. Her tooth has now been attended to and she

is feeling better now.

Val Martin has ongoing Medical Treatment but hopes to be back at a meeting soon.

Shirley Harrrington is unwell at times and has not been able to attend Probus.

Cheryl Thomson is now sparking on all cylinders after her recent operation.

Rita Walker is recovering from the fall at the theatre late last year.

Roy Pyke spent time in hospital and is now home recovering.

Noela Ziebarth does not have the best of health but we hope to see her smiling face at

one of our meetings soon.

Noel Thorburn

Sadly, Noel Thorburn passed away on the 19th February, 2020. Noel was an active

member of our Club until ill health caused his retirement. Noel joined our Club in

January, 1993 and was President in 2000. He also organised the tours from 1997-1999

and from 2001-2005. Our thoughts are with his wife, Gloria, and his family at this time.

FRIENDSHIP LUNCHEON: Thank you for the great support for this event. 48

members attended the luncheon at Fielders, Tingalpa for a couple of hours of fun and

fellowship. The lucky door prizes were a hit and one prize was of great value – it was

like gold at this moment.

Looking ahead, Friendship Luncheons will be held as follows:

April 2 at Redlands Sporting Club, Anson Rd Wellington Point

May 7, at Fielders, Tingalpa

June 4, at Asian House

July 16, at Fielders, Tingalpa

The AGM will take place after the formalities of the General Meeting in March. All

NEWS FROM THE TOUR DIRECTOR: Thursday, February 27, 2020 was our first

day trip for 2020. We set off for Pottsville just over the border in NSW leaving early to

allow for daylight saving. The Tweed Valley Farmhouse Cheeses welcomed us with

scones, jam and cream with coffee, cappucino and pots of tea while we sat overlooking

the green pastures – thank heavens for the recent rain. This was followed by tastings of

different cheeses produced on the site. Lunch was held at the Tweed Golf Club. A stop

was made at Yatala Pies on the way home. A great day was had in very green and lush

countryside.

March Day trip will be to Woongooroo Estate Kilcoy for a day of fun details following.

For this Day Trip the entire time will be spent at Woongooroo Estate for

their Australiana day consisting of the following:

Aussie Morning Tea of damper and Cockey’s Joy tea/coffee

Bush Poetry readings

Guided wine tasting

Group singing of Australian songs

Lunch Corn Meat, white sauce, jacket potatoes, carrots, mushy peas,

damper followed by apple crumble custard

and cream, tea/coffee. Dietary concerns are
