Pymble Players tickets are now available. With the first performance on 16 February, prior to our Probus meeting, I will bring the tickets for distribution at the Bobbin Head BBQ.

Willoughby Theatre Company has only announced two performances thus far for 2019: “Sweet Charity” on Saturday 1 June and “Fiddler on the Roof” on Saturday 26 October. We still have some unallocated tickets, so please contact us asap if you would like to be on the list. Cost is $55 per ticket, which we will start collecting at the next meeting. WTC have not yet finalised the arrangements for their “cabaret style” performance in July. We still have lots of tickets available for the outing to the Ensemble Theatre on Friday 26 April to see “The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race” followed by lunch (own cost) at Bayly’s Restaurant under the theatre. Please let us know if you would like be on the list. Cost is $85 per ticket including the bus, which will be organised if we have enough participants. This show features an all-female cast in what is described as a ‘funny, honest and heart-warming story about upsetting the potato cart and standing up for your principles’.

Our 2018 year went out with a bang as the St Thongs team narrowly beat the Warrawee side at our annual match played in windy conditions at Warrawee Bowling Club. John Julius had a lucky escape as an errant tree decided to succumb to the westerly and nearly flattened his car.

2019 starts with a visitor away match at St Ives Bowling Club hosted by Pymble Probus on Monday 11 March at noon. Let Chris Wood know as soon as possible if you would like to play.

Our final game for 2018 was at Long Reef where we had not played for several years. We had 10 players, perfect weather and good camaraderie over lunch enjoying the water views. Graham Barclay won the event with 35 points closely followed by Dennis Hartland and Ron Eisenhammer who tied for second place each with 33 points. All enjoyed the course which confirmed we should

play Long Reef on at least an annual basis. The next game is a 12-hole event at Avondale followed by a BBQ for the golfers and their partners on Friday 15 February commencing about 2pm. Acceptances are already very high for this event.

Blue Mountains Springtime Retreat Sunday 20 October to Wednesday 23 October 2019

Following a survey of our springtime retreat attendees last year, we will be returning to the beautiful Blue Mountains again in 2019. Dates have now been locked in for Sunday 20 to Wednesday 23 of October. We hope you can join us at The Carrington in Katoomba to experience the Blue Mountains at their glorious best and enjoy another great few days of activity, relaxation and fellowship. As usual, you can choose to stay for 3 nights starting Sunday evening or 2 nights starting Monday evening. The full program will include dinner at the Palais Royale on Sunday evening and a tour to the magnificent Mayfield and Hawkins' Family Gardens on Monday. Organised activities for Tuesday include bowls, golf, bush walking and an activity for those who would rather experience some of the artists' galleries and cultural heritage of the Blue Mountains. Our accommodation package at The Carrington will also include breakfast, happy hour and dinner on Monday and Tuesday, and a farewell breakfast on Wednesday. The Club is required to provide numbers and pay a deposit to The Carrington at the end of March so we will be asking for your deposit at the February and March meetings - $50 each or $100 per couple. Indicative program and costings will be provided in the next newsletter.

Last month’s guest speaker: Raymond Howes

“Violin Making”

Raymond fascinated us with an explanation of the hows and whys of violin manufacture. The science of violin making is very complex and most of the principles are learnt through experience and passed from teacher to pupil (so it is more of an art). Raymond traced the lineage of the grand master violin makers and explained their special contributions to the art. He also showed us the various tools and gadgets used by the violin maker. It was a captivating presentation topped off with a short rendition on one of his instruments; much enjoyed by all present. In February, we are pleased to welcome back Noel Phelan of the Australian Maritime Museum as our speaker . His subject this time is “Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour”. Every country tried to have a secret weapon that would give them an edge and help to win the war. Japan had submarines that could launch planes and carry midget submarines that provided both stealth and surprise. No other Navy had this capability. What happened in Sydney Harbour is a good example of how people react when the unexpected happens and there has been little preparation. If you thought that the Americans at Pearl Harbour misinterpreted and ignored warnings and were slow to react, wait until you hear how we handled the Japanese midget sub attack in Sydney Harbour. Noel has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for several years and enjoys showing visitors over HMAS Vampire, HMAS Advance, HMAS Onslow and First Lady.

Warrimoo Track 3.30pm on Tuesday 29 January (prior to Bobbin Head BBQ) Meet at 3:30pm at the BBQ site. We will proceed over the road bridge; walk behind the Marina Complex; and on to the Warrimoo Track. Adele and I previewed the track and it is in very good

condition and a relatively easy level walk along Cowan Creek. Estimated return time: 45 minutes.

Twilight Seafood Picnic Outing – 27 February 2019. Our plans for the Twilight Seafood Outing on Wednesday February 27 are well in hand. We have over 40 presently registered to attend and can still take a few more. For further details, see earlier

newsletters or website. Progressive Dinner Thursday – March 14 2019. Progress has been slow and we have now 16 names for this event. So, we are seeking further diners. You can choose to be either a host or a guest. The hosts will provide an entrée and main course for up to 6 guests. All hosts and guests will meet up at the Turramurra Bowling Club for dessert and tea/coffee. Using 2017 figures as a guide, guests will pay $40 per person and hosts will be given $110 plus wine. Final figures will be announced in the New Year but we will keep any increase to a minimum. Please submit names to David Maclean. May 30 visit to Victoria Barracks and the Anzac memorial in Hyde Park This outing is currently in early planning, with details to follow shortly
