Learning I Growing I Caring
It has been a jam packed term of great learning, special events and success stories. This comes about
through commitment, team work and effort. These are qualities that are in abundance here at Hastings. I
continue to admire our students for their enthusiasm for learning, and teachers for their dedication.
On Wednesday our Mufti Day to raise funds to support our Tournament of Minds team, who are competing
at the International Finals in Hobart, was an outstanding success. $1130.90 was donated. Thank you for
your generosity!
Last night was a spectacular evening at the Port Macquarie & District Dance Eisteddfod. Congratulations
to our Dance Groups who looked fabulous on stage. At the end of the night, Year 4 were awarded 2nd place,
Year 2 & Year 6 – 3rd place and Highly Commended to Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5! Thank you to all families
for supporting this cultural program. A special thank you goes to the talented Miss Amy and our dedicated
teachers.
Term 4 will be another busy term so make sure to keep an eye on information coming home in the newsletter
and reminders on the school’s Facebook page. I’m sure Hastings Hullabaloo will undoubtedly be a huge hit
with everyone. Year 4 students are excitedly planning their Aussie Bush Camp in December, Year 2 will have
an opportunity to participate in an Intensive Swimming Program and Christmas Discos and a Family Night
Market are planned!
Have a safe, happy and relaxing holiday!

PLASTIC BOTTLE LIDS
Hastings Secondary College – Westport High Campus recently completed a mural made from plastic bottle
tops. The community’s response to the collection was so over-whelming the campus’ Science & Marine
Studies teacher, Lloyd Godson, came up with an idea to put the excess lids to further use instead of going
back into landfill.
Mr Godson successfully applied for the State Government’s Community Grants Project to purchase a
shruder – a machine that shreds and extrudes plastic – to turn plastic into filament to be used in a 3D
printer. From this, the filament can be turned into prosthetic limbs for children. To quote Year 10 student,
Phoebe Brown, "to have this machine and convert it into something useful like a hand for someone without
a hand or something to put in your body to help you live, it's amazing and next-level revolutionary"!
Skye Thomas from 5J wanted to help this wonderful cause and brought the program to our attention.
Please keep the plastic lids from your water bottles, soft drink bottles and milk bottles. Wash them and
drop them into the container at the office! Skye will ensure the lids we collect will be delivered to the project.
SPLITTNG MONEY
The office and the canteen monies are banked each day and
therefore money is not kept at school overnight. With online
payments and Flexischools becoming more popular, it is becoming
increasingly difficult to cash notes into coins to split between
siblings. If you know of upcoming events where cash is required,
please plan ahead and call into a shop on the way home the night
before or on the way to school in the morning.
HASTINGS HEADLINES Abe Whitfield and Tom Gallagher … Congratulations to Abe (3/4P)
and Tom (5/6S) who have been selected in the Mid North Coast
Junior Cricket Academy. The Mid North Coast Cricket Council
program involves intensive regional coaching, training, skill and
player development. Both boys have their goals set in the future for
the NSW elite pathway program leading to the Cricket NSW Youth
Championships. Well done, boys!

PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE
The Hastings Debateinaters travelled to
Sawtell Public School on Wednesday to
compete in the North Coast Semi-final of
the Premiers Debating Challenge. The
topic both teams chose was, "That
primary school teachers should set a
research project for every student over
the holidays". The coin flip deemed
Hastings would have to argue against the
topic as the negative team.
Throughout the debate, Sawtell
presented clear arguments as to why the
change should occur, however the
Debateinaters were not only able to effectively provide detailed rebuttal against those ideas, in some
cases actually using their arguments against them, but also continued to gain advantage through detailed
analysis of their case. The Debateinaters argued that students need a break from schooling, to be physically
active during their holidays and have quality time with their families. Additionally, they argued that the extra
workload on teachers would be hugely stressful and time consuming. Sawtell had no comeback for the
strength of argument put up by the Hastings team and we were awarded the win.
The Debateinaters will now contest the North Coast finals early in Term 4.
