Naumai e te whānau o te kura Kahurangi Tena koutou katoa A very warm welcome to a new school year. It’s always an absolute delight to have the children return after what has felt like a really long break. I’m not joking when I say every child looks taller and every single one has a summer glow about them. It is also lovely and warming to see their excitement about being back, being in a new class, greeting their teachers (old and new), along with their friends and the new children that have started in their classes. Our school has truely been an especially happy place these last two days! Throughout this newsletter you’ll find photos which express this. It is a real pleasure to welcome all our new students, parents and whānau to Kahurangi. We recognise these two days have been especially full on for you. Coming to a new kura (school) is a big deal for the children (and you) and quite nerve racking. We’re really hoping that over the last two days you have felt friendliness and warmth and excitement to have you join us. I know I speak for us all by saying we are very glad to have you join our community. We are looking forward to getting to know your tamariki (children) and you and we hope you feel like you belong real soon. We also have our new teacher Christine Ralph who has started with us this year. Naumai, haere mai Christine! We have started the year with 253 pupils and have 12 classes operating. We anticipate the roll will grow to about 285 pupils over the year as new 5 year olds start school. This brings me nicely to the three new learning spaces. They don’t look particularly nice right now but over the next 5-6 weeks we expect a lot to happen. Not only will they get painted inside and out but gutted inside, re-lined and carpeted which should make them look a lot better than they do now. A small verandah will also be built to connect them. Our hope is that the classes currently in the hall with Meagan and Erin along with Judy and Daniel will move in about week 6. Let’s all cross our fingers that this is the case. So what else can I share about Kahurangi School in 2020? We are aiming to provide a secure, caring and challenging environment in which every pupil will be encouraged to realise their individual potential. We will celebrate diversity, individual differences and promote excellence for all children. Our staff will promote high expectations in learning and behaviour and deliver quality teaching and learning programmes. As a school we want to promote a happy environment where our principles - learning, pride, culture and community reflect responsibility, respect, passion and commitment. The children will experience the basics as well as a wide range of extracurricula and sporting opportunities rich in challenge, and fun and varied learning activities. It was an especially exciting two days for the children who have turned five. The following children have started in our New Entrant class with Kathryn. Sofie, Alex, Hayley, Neleilah, Elliott, Emily, Alex and Leilani (who is Tueila’s

younger sister).

Some children have moved to the area over the summer. Welcome to Shanike who has come from Cambridge. AJ who moved from Newlands. Jacob is from Newtown. Siblings Anita, Sale and Ini have made a little move from

Miramar North. Kāhu too, he’s moved from Lyall Bay along with siblings Princeton and Telesia. River comes to us from Island Bay.

There are also some children who already live in our area and for various reasons their parents have decided that Kahurangi is the right school for them. Siblings Stella and Roman, Ollie and Hunter, Jakey and Liam, Johnny and Milly, Hunter and Lily, Sophia and Isaac welcome. Laite and Sasha join us too.

New children - You have joined us at a time lots of other children have, we want you to know we are looking forward to getting to know you. The same goes for your parents and whānau too! Nau mai, haere mai, tauti mai!

Introducing our new tamariki

It is sunhat season!

It is essential that our children bring a sun hat to school every day in Term 1. We leave it up to our parents to decide what type of sun hat you want your child to wear e.g. cap or wide brim hat. We strongly suggest you name them so it’s easy to return to the owner if found.

Children who don’t have a hat at school must eat and play under our canopy during break times as our sun is harsh and this provides some protection.

If your child is away from schoolPlease phone 04 388 6386, text 027 748 0100 email [email protected] or send a message with a sibling if your child is away. This saves our office staff valuable time. You also need to give a reason why your child is absent eg: sick, medical appointment etc.

If we do not make contact with you then your child will be entered into the online attendance register as Truant. The Ministry of Education provides schools with 24 categories to code student absences. Following these rules, justified absences are those where a child is ‘required’ to be away from school. These absences may include family observances like funerals, or representative sports fixtures where the young person needs to be away from school.

Unjustified absences are those where a family ‘chooses’ to have their youngsters away from school, like visiting family, holidays or overseas travel. These may be deemed to be at the family’s discretion but we are unable to justify them as absences.

If your child is late please get them to report to the office.

Our children are performing at Kotahi this Wednesday on Waitangi Day Yes it’s this Wednesday at our school! We aspire to become a focal point for our community. This concert is a way of supporting this to happen and at the same time bring our wider community together.

Kahurangi Friends are responsible for making this happen and we appreciate their hard work.

Can you help on the day? This year Kotahi is expected to draw big crowds with such amazing acts playing. Kahurangi Friends will have a number of stalls and activities that we need support to make this day a real success. If you can’t help on the day, we also gratefully accept donations of home baking to sell at our Sweet stall. Please provide baking that can be sold individually (cupcakes, muffins) or by the slice.See Lize, our Volunteer Coordinator, at school between 3 - 3:30pm, text her on 021 821 000 or email [email protected].

Our Kapa Haka group (which is every student in our school) is opening this concert. We’re hoping for as many of our students to attend as possible. Our students are talented and it would be nice to share this talent with our wider community. After the performance all the children will be free to enjoy the event with their whānau.

Important Information

Time to arrive: 2:30pm so children can change into their Kapa Haka uniforms

Where to go: All students will be dressed in Waka Pūhara (the senior area of the school)

What to wear: Boys need to wear shorts - black is best Girls don’t need to wear anything special as they wear a dress. Some girls feel more comfortable if they wear tight bike shorts and a strapless tube top under their dress.

Who: Every student in our school. Our new students can choose if they would like to join in as they haven’t had much time to learn the items.

We’d like all our families to be involved in the event but realise you might already have special things planned for this public holiday. Those of you who can make it, we are sure you’ll have a great time! Invite as many people as you can.

Festival Information

Gates open 2pm, stage opens with whole school Kapa Haka at 3pm.

Bring a blanket, sunhat and picnic. It can also get chilly, so don’t forget warm clothes. It’s okay to bring beer or wine, as long as you drink responsibly - it’s a family event. You can also purchase something from one of the food stalls.

Parking

We’ve had a wonderful offer from Scot’s College to our families,. They have 75 parking spaces, entrance on Monorgan Street, specially for Kotahi day! They’ll have signs up to point people to the pedestrian access, for the short-cut to Kahurangi.

‘Meet the teacher’ Conversations‘Meet the teacher’ Conversations

Wednesday 19 February

This is a chance for you to have some one on one time with your child’s teacher. We’d like you to do most of the talking as we want the teacher to learn more about your child. Having these conversations early in the year will mean the teachers can make good use of the information you give them to support your child in their learning.

There is also the opportunity to book an appointment with me (Kyran) if you have anything at all you’d like to discuss.

School will finish earlyat 12:30pm on this day.

You can book your interview time by going to www.schoolinterviews.co.nzwww.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter school code hpun8 hpun8
