Dear Family and Friends of OLSH College Bentleigh,

Jesus and Love this is what the celebration of Sacred Heart Day is all about – and we had a wonderful celebration! Last Friday, we celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During our Mass, we remembered and celebrated the fact that we are each called to fullness of life through the love of Jesus.

As a sign of our solidarity with the poor, we brought forward all the blankets collected for those who are homeless and sleeping rough this winter. Last Friday we had our Sacred Heart Day Mass. We listened to beautiful prayers in different languages. Father Frank said "there is so much energy and love at OLSH". The Year 12 students talked about their relationship with God, and the President of the Bentleigh St Vincent de Paul talked about the homeless and why one blanket might put a massive smile on their face. We had all the class representatives take up the blankets. It was a great Mass.

The eagerly anticipated Performing Arts Spectacular (PAS) was held on Sacred Heart Day, Friday 27 May. Each house had to present an item involving singing, acting and dancing on the theme of a selected decade of the twentieth century. All houses entered into the spirit of the day and performed with energy and enthusiasm. In fact, this year saw the standard lift significantly with most engaging and polished presentations. The PAS Bandstand trophy was won, for the first time, by Sweeney. Congratulations girls! Following the house competition, the audience was treated to OLSH You’ve Got Talent. First place was awarded to White Noise – Sinead Fernandes, Priyanka Francis, Piwai Kahonde and Lisa Kirui; second place – Katelyn Fitchett, Chloe Hart and India Hawkins; third place – Keely Jamieson. The adjudicators – Terri Svoronos, Tasha Esteves and Joshua Hu - thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful performances and congratulated all participants. Congratulations to all – PAS 2016 was a great success!

This year a group of Year 10 and 11 students have come together to make a Student Catering team led by Ms Brown. We have combined all of our skills in planning and cooking to cater for two functions this year. Last Thursday we catered for the staff’s Biggest Morning Tea raising funds for the Cancer Council. We have raised $441.85 with donations still coming in. We made a selection of sweet and savoury foods with the colour yellow as our main focus. The selection of our food ranged from sausage roll pinwheels to pumpkin scones. After a long Tuesday by 5pm we had finished off making 200 pinwheels, 100 cheese pastries and over 100 sweet treats including cupcakes and chocolate rumballs. We all enjoyed catering for a function this size and donated some of our own time to make this work, including an afterschool cooking session and using our lunchtimes and recess to prepare for the event. It was lots of fun!

The Maths Hub tutorial program will be held weekly, after school on a Monday, in the Library from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. Maths Hub is open to all students at OLSH. It is to support students and help them gain confidence with their Mathematics. Homework can be completed, help can be sought or students can work quietly on their own and get help when required. Teachers and peer tutors will be available to support students. Students will be required to sign in and out for attendance records as these will be used for College Colours.

Our VCE Drama students presented their ensemble performance for assessment on Thursday 19 May in the College Theatrette.

After weeks of planning and rehearsing the girls performed with energy and enthusiasm to a most appreciative audience which included guest assessors Marisa Cesario, Laura Colaianni, Sarah Jones, Lara White (all past students who studied VCE Drama at the College) and current Year 12 student Laura Webb who completed VCE Drama last year.

The ensemble is a most challenging requirement of VCE Drama; the girls are to be congratulated for their commitment to this performance task.

At OLSH College Bentleigh and St James College East Bentleigh we are delighted to give Year 7 and 8 students the opportunity to participate in a junior drama event this year. Two plays – The Perils of Prudence Goodheart and Sorry, Wrong Number – will be performed in the OLSH College Theatrette at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 September.

Rehearsals have commenced and will continue every Thursday in Terms 2 and 3 until the production week. Also, one Saturday morning rehearsal and one Sunday morning rehearsal have been scheduled.

We look forward to a wonderful junior drama event and giving our OLSH and St James students the experience of working together and the joy of performing for an audience.

40th Reunion

Class of 1976 It might have been four decades or more since these students left OLSH but the years slipped away at the 40th reunion of the Class of 1976 at the College on Sunday 22 May 2016. Three past teachers were able to attend the gathering: Joy Carver, Monica Iles and Sr Jane Dalton, College Principal from 1973-1977. The 2014 and 2015 Flame Scholarship Award girls, Faye Valladares and Genevieve Gallucci, were also present in their roles as College ambassadors and tour guides. Prior to lining up for a group photo, they burst into a rousing rendition of the school song “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart”. Everyone remembered the words and they sang with gusto. That’s true OLSH spirit.
