One of our students of B.Tech, Ms. Mayurakshi Mukherjee of Heritage Institute of Technology (HITK) brought laurels to our Institution and also to our country by getting selected from West Bengal Rowing Federation of India for the 2016 Asian Indoor Rowing Championships. HITK also fetched laurels to KBT by winning the All India PRSI Award for ICABET 2016 (An International Conference organized by HITK) in the category of “Best Event Managed during the year” at the ALL India PRSI Conference 2016 held at Kolkata from 16th December till 18th December 2016. Ms. Mayurakshi Banerjee, the only girl selected from West Bengal by Rowing Federation of India (RFI) for the 2016 Asian Indoor Rowing Championships that concluded in Pattaya, Thailand made the country proud by winning a silver and a bronze medal. Our Country bagged 12 medals in all, including five silvers.

A student of Electronics & Communication Engineering at the Heritage Institute of Technolgy, Mayurakshi is passionate about rowing. She has participated in several national events and won medals for the state.

“This was a great achievement by the Indian team. I am also proud of my daughter who bagged a silver in the Open Mixed Four category and a bronze in Women’s Doubles. She takes the sport very seriously and is a member of Bengal Rowing Club and West Bengal Rowing Association (WBRA). She was at the RFI National Training Camp in Hyderabad since September 30 before proceeding to Thailand for the event. She arrived in Kolkata on Monday,” - Milon Mukhopadhyay, father of Mayurakshi.

Winning 650 points, The Heritage School were runners-up at the India Today Wiz-Quiz organized from 13th to 15th Sep’16 at New Delhi.

HBS Celebrated Freshers’ welcome in a grand manner on 9th September 2016 where the students were engaged in various activities like fashion show for the selection of Mr. and Ms. Fresher of the year and many more. The faculty members were actively involved in making this event a success.

An Inter-Departmental Debate competition on the motion ‘Recent Demonetisation move by the Government of India would surely restrict the Black economy in India’ on 19th November 2016.

The debate had 10 teams representing all the Departments of the College. Dr. Tilak Chatterjee, Principal, Bankim Sardar College, 24 Parganas (S), was invited to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Expression was brought to life at the drama competition organized by The Heritage College (THC) on 9th December, aptly named, ‘Dramatic Dreams’. The themes traversed by the four interdepartmental groups were ‘Twisted Fairy Tales’, ‘Circus’ and ‘Terrorism’, provided by the college itself.

On 7th September 2016, THS organized a Career Fair. Eminent universities like Berkley University, University of Buffalo, University of San Fancisco, University of Ithaca and many more participated.

The students got an excellent opportunity to interact with representatives from these universities that will help them make the right career choice for higher education.

This was the flavor of the season at Heritage. To commemorate 15 years of its unique journey, HITK organized a three-day National Conference on ‘Recent Advances in Science & Technology’ sponsored in association with TEQIP-II on 27th Sep. ’16. The Conference was addressed by the Chief Guest, Padma Bhushan Dr. Bikash Sinha, Homi Babha Professor, Former Director of SINP and VECC. The other dignitaries were Shri Vikram Swarup, Vice-chairman, Kalyan Bharti Trust, Prof. Ajoy Ray, Director, IIEST, Shibpur, Prof. Kankan Bhattacharya, Ex-Director, IACS, Kolkata, Mr. Shyamsundar Bang, Executive Director, Jubilant Life Sciences, Noida and Emeritus Professor, Department of Chemistry, HITK, Prof. D.C. Mukherjee.

In his opening address, Dr. Pranay Chaudhuri, Principal, HITK spoke about the developments of the Institute during the last 15 years. Prof. Ajoy Ray, during his inaugural speech, spoke about recent developments in science and technology stressing on the increase in use of smart devices. He also spoke about intelligent networks, recognition of patterns in analyzing data that will help in solving many problems. Dr. Bikash Sinha spoke about the relationship between science and technology and their inseparability from each other. Technology is used in science to invent new things to benefit mankind. He stressed upon the importance of Nuclear Energy and emphasized on the reasons behind climate changes, focusing more on green energy that will help in

solving energy crisis. Prof. Kankan Bhattacharya elucidated about the sea change brought about by mobile phones. He emphasized on the early green revolution followed by white revolution leading to abundant supply of milk and then the pink revolution which created phenomenal changes in the pharmaceutical industry.

Later on Mr. Shyamsundar Bang spoke about the feasibility of investments in capital intensive projects for research and development giving the discussion a commercial angle and also touched upon the applicability of science and technology in the economic growth of the Nation. “The phenomenal development of science and technology will help us to create knowledge from the vast data,” said Shri Vikram Swarup during his address in the inaugural session.

The final day witnessed a panel discussion on ‘Innovations in Science & Technology’ which was moderated by Prof. A.S. Kolaskar VC, The Neotia University. The panelists were Prof. Siddhartha Dutta, former Pro-VC, Jadavpur University, Prof. D.K. Banwet, VC, University of Engineering & Management, Kolkata and Prof. D.K. Sinha, Former VC, Viswa-Bharti University. Prof. A.S. Kolaskar gave examples of various latest inventions in science and technology that transformed mankind. Prof. D.K. Banwet provided various practical applications of innovation from his experiences when he was at the Department of Management Sciences at IIT Delhi.

Decoding Journalism in the global arena

While Kolkata was engaged in pre Durga Puja preparations, the Department of Media Sciences at The Heritage Academy was busy holding an International Workshop in collaboration with ‘Talk 360’ and India Blooms News Services (IBNS) on 2nd Oct. ’16.

Journalism students from several Kolkata colleges along with faculty members with an urge to upgrade their knowledge participated in this event. Mr. Sujoy Dhar, Group Editor, IBNS, Ms. Jayalakshmi Sengupta, Editor, Niyogi Books and Consulting Editor, IBNS, Mr. Pradip Bagchi, Senior Editor, TOI, New Delhi and Ms. Laura Ungar, Senior American Journalist, USA Today, Washington were the speakers. The recent Uri attacks that caused a thaw in Indo-Pak relations was discussed as a case study of news reporting. The students opined that such attacks would result in a sharp fall in the economic growth of both the countries thus affecting the common man adversely. Examples of

follow-up stories about the Uri attacks were discussed like the effect of such attack on the film industry, economic growth, sensex and many more. The workshop also stressed on the art of crafting a new story with the latest innovations in the field of journalism. Use of social media like You Tube can be actively used to make the stories more lively and interesting.

Apart from these, television journalism, blogging, digital media and search engine optimization techniques were also discussed. Ms. Ritusmita Biswas, CEO of Digital Brands also interacted with the students about social media marketing and branding. “We have been organizing these workshops since many years and our motive is to give a practical insight to the students of journalism,” said Mr. Sujoy Dhar, Group Editor, IBNS.

The completion of 15 years witnessed a significant event at Heritage. The All India ICSE Schools Literary Meet 2016 was organized at THS on 19th Sep. ’16. About 50 schools including 180 students and teachers from various ICSE & ISC registered schools in India participated in the Grand event. The National Meet was inaugurated by Mr. Gerry Arathoon, CEO & Secretary of the Council of Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi as the Chief Guest in the presence of Mr. K.V. Vincent, Secretary-Treasurer, ASISC Schools.

Mini-input Film Festival @ THA

The Department of Media Sciences at The Heritage Academy organized ‘The Heritage Mini Input Film Festival’ on 11th Nov. ’16 to motivate students towards appreciation of films. Mr. Jawhar Sircar, former CEO, Prasar Bharti was the Chief Guest along with other well known actors Mr. Barun Chanda, Mr. Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Mr Anjan Bose (Chairman, KIFF Selection Committee) and eminent personality Mr. S.V. Raman who was the Guest of Honor. The Festival commenced with lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest followed by screening of some world famous International Public Television Films.

The Festival also comprised two-minute Short Film Making Competition amongst students of various Kolkata colleges. Mr. Sircar motivated

students to make a vibrant career in the world of media and stated that the scenario in the sector had witnessed a sea change where making a film is possible through crowd funding. Mr. Barun Chanda, who was the hero in Ray’s film ‘Seemabadhya’ spoke about importance of discipline and time management by stating an example when he worked with Mr. Ray and how Mr. Ray meticulously emphasized on each and every minute details for making such a great film as ‘Seemabadhya’. Mr. Sabyasachi Chakraborty spoke about his love for theatre, his passion to be a technician behind the screen and moving on towards photography. Some excellent films were showcased to motivate students.

Life should be full of festivals to motivate innovative minds. THS organized an Inter-school Fest ‘Abhibyakti 2016’ on 11th & 12th Nov. ’16 to promote bonding and camaraderie amongst students of different Schools. Smt. Bindu Swarup and Smt. Bhawna Agarwal did the inauguration in the presence of Principal, Ms. Seema Sapru, Vice-principal Ms. Meenakshi Atal, CEO-KBT, Shri Pradip Agarwal and Director-KBT, Shri Probir Roy. Ms. Meenakshi Chaudhary, the Chief Guest on the second day, motivated the students.

It saw the holding of various events like Sports (Football, Kho Kho, Tennis, Rock Climbing, Fun Relay, Free Style Swimming), Bilingual Elocution, Mangalacharan (chanting of shlokas), Harmony (use of unconventional instruments to produce music accompanied by vocals), Rhythm Roots (Indian Tribal or Martial Art Dance), Leap out of the Book, Potokatha, Pebble Art, Mrittika, Finger Food, Hasna Mana Hai, Creativity.com, Story Board and Mime Workshop.

Special Children of IICP (Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy) and Noble Mission were given a platform to compete at par with the other children proving that The Heritage School is truly an inclusive school. THS emerged as winners in Abhivyakti followed by Modern High School for Girls. Birla High School was adjudged second runner-up.

Rotary Club of Calcutta Yuvis and Inner Wheel Club of Calcutta Metro Maidan in association with NGO Saevus the country’s foremost nature and wildlife magazine supported by The Heritage School hosted a School Based Nature Quiz on environment involving kids of standard V to VII from about 50 prominent schools of Kolkata on 10th of Dec. ’16. This Annual Quiz is an all India event and is held in about 20 cities. THS students being the 2nd runners-up brought laurels to the institution. Eminent actor Prosenjit Chatterjee was the Chief Guest during the Award Distribution Ceremony.

FOTA 2016“Management’s job is to optimize the whole system” – W. Edwards Deming

Department of Mathematics, Heritage Institute of Technology Kolkata, in association with ORSI Kolkata Chapter organized an International Conference on ‘Frontiers of Optimization- Theory & Applications (FOTA 2016)’ from 24th to 26th Nov. ’16. The Conference was presided over by Prof. Vijay Chandru, Co-founder & Chairman, Strand Life, Prof. Damodar Acharya, Former Chairman, AICTE, Prof. Tatsuo Oyama, NGIPS, Japan, Prof. Bani Sinha, Prof. Baoding Liu, Tsinghua University, China, Dr. Samarjit Kar and Prof. R.N. Mukherjee

Prof. Vijay Chandru spoke about the sea change in the field of Operations Research and its importance. Ex-chairman, AICTE, Prof. Damodar Acharya who had visited Heritage Institute 8 years ago said that the Institute had progressed a lot in the field of engineering education and is one of the best institutes in West Bengal. He also spoke about the utility of Operations Research in management and administration towards making significant decisions. Professor Tatsuo Oyama spoke on different perspectives especially in the Public Utility Sector and said that West Bengal needs to focus more towards it that can only be achieved through the effective use of Operations Research.

The conference witnessed participation of various research scholars and scientists across the country.

Two students of The Heritage Academy, Sayandip Sikder and Malick Arjoon Roy made a video on the topic ‘Indo Asia Connectivity for Shared Propserity’, organized by the US, Consul General of Kolkata. This video was highly appreciated by the US Consul General of Kolkata and it was treated as an official video, that was posted on 21st Dec. ’16 on their Facebook page.

Students of Suryakiran showcased their talent for the first time by performing a dance item during the Junior School Concert

Seven German students flew down to Kolkata specifically to teach the students of Suryakiran. They were very impressed

with the type of social endeavors of KBT.
