GUEST PRESENTER FOR JUNE
Sue Norton-Scott creates mixed media art that asks people
to think differently about contemporary topics. Norton-Scott grew up in upstate
New York, but she wasn't cut out to live in cold climates. After graduating from
Crane School of Music, in Potsdam, N.Y., the young teacher moved across
country, and planted roots in chandler, Arizona. Now, thirty-some years later, she
is retired from the Mesa Public Schools and lets her creative side flourish. Her
surrealistic, 3-dimensional art has been displayed in New York City, Chicago, and
Sacramento, as well as in the Mesa Contemporary Arts Gallery.
Although retired, teaching continues to be a passion. Adult students from
around the world enrolled in Rio Salado College's online Art History benefit from
her hands-on expertise. Fifth graders in the Tempe Elementary School District
simply adore the "Self Portrait With a Twist" mixed media workshop that was
developed and is taught by Norton-Scott for their Studio Artist Program. Always
looking for unusual and creative opportunities, a current project involves
collaborating with a research scientist to develop a piece of informational art for
the "Phosphorus Sustainability Summit" at Arizona State University. Never
ordinary, constantly pushing boundaries, Norton-Scott is always ready to
embrace cutting-edge visual ideas. Paul Nemiroff, 1st VP of Programs

Member CRITIQUE
Donna Levine is leading our critique for June 4th. All members & guests are invited to participate with work and suggestions for the work. Please join us! Critique begins promptly at 5:45 pm and runs to 6:45 pm prior to the General meeting.
Paintings and drawings do not need to be framed. Unfinished pieces are welcome for suggestions to finish them. Those members arriving with work after 6:15 risk not having their work critiqued depending on volume of work brought in earlier. 1 painting only per person please. We would prefer that participants in the critique please not bring paintings that are freshly wet, oils particularly, as the paint gets on our hands and clothes from handling the pieces and then paint is transferred to other works and the carpet in the critique area. If you have a frame to put the painting in for handling purposes that
will be appreciated. Thanks from the critique leaders.
~ Jim Garrison, Critique Master

Greetings SAL, It has been a pleasure leading this fine group of artists for the past two years, I have gotten to know many of you more and I am grateful of the many new friendships that have formed. I have learned a lot about what it takes to be a leader. There were some challenges, but no one said it was going to be easy. But, I wouldn’t change my experience one bit! I will be forever grateful for the support given to me by fellow SAL members who do so much for our League. They are truly the people to keep this great organization moving ever forward. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I am excited for the next chapter of the Scottsdale Artists League. Please welcome our new upcoming board members and support their visions for the future!

And thank you for a successful evening last Tuesday, May 7. It went very smooth
because of all of your help and suggestions. Mona is a star, she knows exactly what to do when, as she has been doing it for so many
years and help rookies like me learn the ropes. Where would we be without people
like yourselves, we thank you all for your willingness to pitch in. It is always fun when
we get together and do it together. It was a well oiled machine.

From Rebekah Shindel – our $1,000 scholarship recipient for 2013.
We greatly enjoyed the evening. The Scottsdale Artist League is such a wonderful collaboration of artist and enthusiasts. Everyone was
very friendly and helpful. Some even went above and beyond by offering me supplies as well as opportunities. The gift card SAL gave me
was so unexpected and appreciated. Thank you again for choosing me for this honor and the meeting on the 7th was so enjoyable. The
Scottsdale Artist League is an amazing organization.
SAL picked a winner!

AZ Art Alliance Fine Art Gallery
9011 E. Indian Bend, Scottsdale AZ 85250
The Pavilions at Talking Stick – Indian Bend Rd. & the 101 Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10am – 5pm!
To Juried Arizona Art Alliance Artists: This announcement pertains to the upcoming 2013 exhibition period June 5 - August 4, 2013 at
the Arizona Art Alliance Gallery. Applications for this show period are due by 5PM Friday, May 24, 2013 (see attached Application for
details). The Application and the Prospectus will also be available within the next few days on our website (www.azartalliance.com).
***For marketing purposes, we have assigned a theme for each exhibition, but do not let that deter you from entering your artwork.
"Hot AZ Art" - June 5 - August 4, 2013
For this exhibition period at the AZ Art Alliance Gallery, we are presenting to the public “Hot AZ Art” and encourage our artists to submit
artwork with that theme in mind. Summer in the Valley of the Sun ……Many will travel to northern AZ to escape the heat, or perhaps travel
out of state. But for those of us who remain in the Valley, we will experience many days with triple-digit temperatures. After awhile, the mild
AZ winter will be a distant memory, and we’ll wonder how on earth we live here…..or why??!!
How will You, as an Artist, interpret the “Hot AZ Art” theme? …...With hot reds, oranges, and yellows? …...With scenes of desert cacti?
…...With red-hot chili peppers? Or melting ice cream cones? Or…..perhaps you will choose to escape the heat….with artwork that
depicts beach scenes, snow-capped mountains, or tall glasses of lemonade….. However you choose to interpret the theme, our
Gallery visitors are sure to enjoy the opportunity to cool off with some “Hot AZ Art”.
Here are some more news items from the Alliance:
In the month of March Gallery sales were $1,590 and Gift Shop sales $610.50 for a total of $2,200.50.
All the Board positions are basically up for re-election although some board members will stay in their position or slide into another. The
critical positions that are open are President, two Vice Presidents and Secretary. There are a few Committee Director positions open, too.
Each is a 2 year term. You do NOT need to be an artist to be on the Board. Contact Marie MacGregor, the nomination committee chair
directly if you or someone else you know may be interested. She can be reached at 520-836-2813 or email: [email protected]
The gallery will go back to a 30% sales contribution for the Gift Shop only. The 40% contribution for all other art in the Gallery still stands
(which went into effect in January). The maximum price in the Gift Shop is $175. for an item and the minimum price for the gallery is $175.
except for some 3D and miniature art, per the show prospectus. Gift shop items need to be clearly labeled.
The Arizona Art Alliance and Ariztlan Inc. along with the Arizona Military Museum have agreed to honor the Vietnam Veterans though a
major art exhibit. They are looking for not only combat scenes, but off duty life, writing letters, shaving, etc. any scene depicting what life
may have been like during this time. Please no gory stuff. Vietnamese daily life is also of interest. You do not need to have served in
Vietnam, you can get inspiration or reference photos from the Vietnam War online. It’s free to enter. More info to come, submission will be
some time in August. Any questions email John Fontana at john.fontana@azartalliance.
As you may know, we have greatly simplified the application (no CD requirement), done away with the application fee, and are adopting a
standard panel/space fee for each exhibition period (please see the Prospectus & Application for details). We are going back to
collecting your panel fee at the time you deliver your artwork (May 6, 2013), as it proved to be more cumbersome to collect fees in
advance. Please follow directions in the Prospectus & Application. Thank you for your cooperation!

There are also new and exciting workshops available at the gallery. Please check the Alliance newsletter.
