ANZAC DAY
The children from LPS have been invited to represent our
school at the Commemoration March and wreath laying service
in Katoomba on Anzac Day.
Students wishing to participate are to meet at 10.50am in
front of the Carrington Square steps in Katoomba Street.
Students are required to wear full school uniform and hat.
The March will proceed via Katoomba, Waratah and Lurline
Streets to the Memorial Wall at the Katoomba RSL ASC in
Merriwa Street. A wreath laying ceremony will then take
place. Children will depart at this point with their parents. It
is advisable for parents to follow the parade to the RSL as
they must be available to pick up children immediately after
the service.
From the Principal …. Term in Review
We have made a positive start to the school year in many ways. The students and teachers have
been strongly focused on teaching and learning, with a conscious effort made to reduce the
impact on classroom learning. Our students have been involved in some important events and
activities including the swimming carnival, Peer Support program, opera incursion, Harmony Day,
National Day of Action against Bullying and the Easter Parade. Our senior choir, recorder group,
and dance groups have begun working on routines and pieces they will need to have perfected
for performances later in the year. Our SRC has taken an active role in seeking out and
responding to ‘student voice’, which we will hear more about next term.
Staffing Update
Staffing Update
At the end of this week we say ‘farewell’ to two of our permanent teachers. From the beginning
of Term 2, Ms Weir will be starting a teaching position in regional NSW and Mr Carter will be
starting a position as Relieving Principal at a school in the Hawkesbury region. They are both
highly skilled and experienced teachers who will be sadly missed by our LPS community.
5/6 Cicadas will be taught for the rest of the year by our new Stage 3 Assistant Principal, Mrs
Jodie Field. 3/4 Wombats will be taught by one of our regular casual teachers, Mrs Kirsty
Horne until this classroom teacher position is permanently filled through the NSW Department
of Education staffing system. I expect Mrs Horne will be with us for at least Term 2.
Student Attendance
This term, student attendance rates have been impressive, with all grades having students at
school for at least 93% of the term. Thank you parents/carers for getting your children to
school almost every day. Hopefully we will have a winter with minimal illness so our students and
teachers can make the most of the learning on offer here at school.
School Holidays
Our last day of term is this Friday 13 April. Staff will be returning for professional learning on
Monday 30 April and students will return on Tuesday 1 May. If you notice anything suspicious
here at school over the holiday break, please report immediately to School Security (1300
880021) or local police (47828199).

SCHOOL BADGES Did you know that as part of the school’s
memorabilia, we have school badges for
sale – perhaps you might like one as a keepsake
of your child’s time at Leura Public School.
Badges can be purchased at the school office.
SYDNEY WEST BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Lauren, Eashar, Ava, Sienna Rose and
Quinn who were successful in making the Blue Mountains
PSSA girls and boys basketball teams. Both teams
competed in the Sydney West championships and the girls
team managed to reach the semi-final, going down to the
tournament winner, Castle Hill. A special mention to Lauren
who has been chosen to represent Sydney West at the
State carnival in Broken Hill. Well done!

PEER SUPPORT
Week 6 – We further developed the idea of belonging this week in Peer Support. Having looked at the role of family last week now we look at our network of friends. The children
identify all the groups to which they belong and the friends they have in each group. The
activities are designed to encourage the children to appreciate the wide network of friends
they have and the importance of humour between friends.
Discuss the ways your child uses to show their friends that they care about them and encourage
them to do these things regularly.
Week 7 – This week in Peer Support the children learn the need to develop a range of coping strategies. In order to become more resilient, children need to have a number of different
ways of coping with difficulties. Through the various activities, children learn to distinguish
between helpful, resilient ways of coping and less helpful, non-resilient ways.
Discuss with your child the ways they have chosen to cope with difficulties that might arise in
their life and encourage them to practise these regularly.
BLUE ALERT
Friday, 13th April is our PBL Values
Day for the term. We will be
acknowledging “Resilience” as one of
our core values. Children are invited
to wear blue and have a great last
day of term.

In term 2, Leura Public is going to trial its first Robotics Club

expertise of our parents and, to this end, would like to invite
two parents to join us.
The small group of 12 students will begin with building and
coding using WeDo 2.0 Lego kits. If you have experience in
this area and would like to support our club on Tuesday mornings before school (8.15am), please contact Mr. Atkinson through the school office.
