Newsletter of the
The NSCR was conceived in 2009, as a collaborative
effort between the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria
(IHVN), Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), and cancer
registries of federal health institutions in Nigeria.
The main objective of this program is to provide data
from Nigerian cancer registries on the most common
cancers, cancer incidence and cancer mortality
statistics. This objective is being achieved through
collaboration and support from local and international
partners such as the International Agency for Research
on Cancer (IARC), International Prevention Research
Institute (iPRI) and Society of Oncology and Cancer
Research of Nigeria (SOCRON) and the African Cancer
Registry Network (AFCRN).

Calabar is the capital of Cross-River state, a coastal city in southeastern Nigeria. Cross-Rivers
state has a population of about 3,104,446 according to 2006 population census and 18 local
government areas, with several ethnics groups. The state is known for her tourist
attractions, with many resort centers especially in Calabar city.
Calabar cancer registry (CCR) is located in the Pathology department of the 451-bed University of
Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar (UCTH). CCR though started way back as 1979, as a Hospital-
based tumor registry, reporting cancer cases at the UCTH. In 2009, CCR became a member of NSCR,
the body that plays a supervisory role over cancer registries in Nigeria. The registry is now a
Population-based cancer registry (PBCR) with a defined population coverage area of 647,458
people covering Calabar south, Calabar Municipal and Akpabuyo Local Government Areas L.G.A's).

CCR is a member of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR). Also, CCR is now a
member of the Africa Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN), a body serving to improve cancer
surveillance in the continent of Africa.
The registry actively collects data from the pathology laboratory, medical records department,
oncology department and in-patient wards and out-patient clinics. Data is also collected from
hospitals (both public and private) and pathology laboratories within the coverage of area. Data
abstracted by the cancer registry include information on name, age, tribe, marital status, religion,
address, date of diagnosis, basis of diagnosis, morphology and topography of tumor, treatment, and
date of last contact. CCR uses Canreg software for data entry and management which prevents the use
of non-existent codes and performs checks for internal consistency between variables and ICD-O 3 for
classification and coding.

Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria. It is located in the centre of Nigeria, within the Federal
Capital Territory (FCT). The 2006 census reports a population of 1,406,239 for the Federal
Capital Territory, with a landmass of approximately 7,315 km², of which the actual city
occupies 275.3 km2. However, Abuja has witnessed a huge influx of people into the city which has
led to the emergence of several satellite towns and smaller settlements to which the planned city is
sprawling towards. FCT is currently made up of 6 local councils, comprising Abuja Municipal
(AMAC), Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Bwari and Kwali.
Abuja cancer registry (ABCR) is a Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR), domiciled in the
Oncology Department of the National Hospital Abuja (NHA), but receiving substantial data from
the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) registry. ABCR began in 2009 as a PBCR and
covers a defined population of 1 406 239 people, within the 6 local government councils in FCT
(AMAC, Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Bwari and Kwali).

The Registry employs both active and passive methods of case-finding, utilising the sources of
information available at the hospitals including, hospital ward, special cancer units- oncology,
chemotherapy and radiotherapy, pathology laboratory, medical records department and out-
patient clinics. Most of the cancer management services in Abuja (diagnostic and treatment) are
located at the NHA and UATH. Registry staffs also source for data from departments and units in
the various pathology laboratories, cancer screening centers and hospitals within the registry
coverage area. Data is recorded on the cancer registry abstraction form, which captures all the key
variables, including name, age, tribe, marital status, religion, address, date of diagnosis, basis of
diagnosis, morphology and topography of tumor, treatment, and date of last contact. Data are
coded to the ICD-O-3 system and the CanReg software developed by the IARC is used for data
processing and management.

There is every reason to be excited about the prospects of cancer registration in Nigeria. Government
recognition of the significance of this activity, the availability of already trained registry heads and
registrars; and the cancer data coming out of the registries give cause for optimism. Sustained effort and
innovative problem solving at all levels will be required for this exciting prospect to be translated into
continued success on the ground. Data from Nigeria needs to make a re-entry into Cancer Incidence in Five
Continents (CI5); this is a WHO publication of cancer statistics from the world over. To achieve this, close
monitoring of indices of data quality in Cancer Registration must be sustained.
