Easter and Harvest For most farmers the time of Harvest is almost over. For
home veggie growers, we hope it continues for a while.
Many of us have a tradition of celebrating Harvest
Festival. We love to decorate the churches and to give
away produce to others who could really use the extra.
In Aotearoa NZ we celebrate (if that’s the right word),
the season of Easter and Harvest around the same
time. If we were in the Northern Hemisphere, they’d be
at different times of the year. Europe celebrates Easter
in Spring-time and Harvest in the autumn.
We must make our own way, honouring God at work in
our land; our place. You’ll notice that several of our
churches do have a Harvest Festival. Come along if
you've never been to one; you really might enjoy it!
We’ll give our produce to local people and community
groups and some to City Mission too. (Recently we’ve
taken groceries from Southbridge and Leeston into the
Mission and they’ve been so appreciative. They’re
struggling to keep up with the demand for food. Even
working people find it hard to keep the pantry full
today.)
By the time you read this we will be into the season of
Lent; the time when we follow Jesus’ life as it leads up
to the cross, and to Easter Resurrection. Participating in
Lent is no longer the norm in our community. We’re not
used to denying ourselves or to undertaking any kind of
spiritual discipline, even for a short time.
Some disciplines are fasts or subtractions. Some are
additions. Even the additions require giving up
something though - usually giving up time. There are
lots of creative ways of honouring the Lord in this
season. Families might consider looking up

If you’d like to do something different this Lent and you
don’t know what, or you’d like some support as you go
along, please contact me. I’d love to help.

With the AGM approaching the parish is seeking the following nominations: People’s Warden vacancy Murray Stephens has held the position of People’s Warden
for two years and is looking to step down in order to focus
on contributing with financial running of the parish. Many
thanks to Murray for his time effort ideas and support
during his time in this position. If you would like to know
more or have ideas about nominating someone please

New Arrival... Following many years of saving funds
earned from catering and other
events, together with donations; the
St James Grounds committee met
recently and after evaluating the
options, decided to purchase a John
Deere T20. The new mower was
delivered in early February; THANKS to our amazing grass
cutting team who
persevered with the
old mower over many
years. The St James
committee have
agreed that Ian Ford
[who mows the lawns
at Leeston St Johns]
may use the new
Southbridge mower
there as well.
Our Parish Halls are available for hire. Hire: $20 per hour.
