• Montreal 2005: The 11th United Nations Climate Change Conference The 11th Annual United Nations Climate Change Conference was held from November 28 to December 9, 2005 in Montreal. Montreal 2005 will open a new chapter in the international dialogue on climate change and the Protocol itself. Delegates from 189 countries and the European Union will gather to consider the way forward for Kyoto, and deeper engagement in multilateral action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The conference also discussed the future strategy and action plan for developing country (like China, India) for the post-Kyoto commitments. The conference has attracted more than 10,000 people to the city of Montreal, including delegates, official observers from government, industry, business, the scientific community, and other groups interested in action on climate change, and up to 1,000 journalists from around the world. Changhui Peng, a member of SINO-ECO, has been invited as official observer from the scientific community to attend this first Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol since it came into effect in February 2005. Former President Clinton, a Kyoto supporter, appeared at the Montreal meeting on its final day and urged nations to unite to confront the climate change threat. • Special issue of Global Change Biology for 2005 Guangzhou Carbon Symposium A proposal of a special issue of Global Change Biology for publishing the papers presented at the 2005 Guangzhou symposium on ecosystem carbon balance and the carbon cycle (convened on July 1-3, 2005 in Guangzhou, China) has been recently approved by Steve Long (Chief Editor of the journal), in which recent research progress and advances in the theory of the carbon cycle and its application were reviewed. The meeting also aimed to promote effective international communication, collaboration, and cooperation in this field. Hong Jiang and Changhui Peng will be involved as the guest editor Committee and a number of SINO-ECO members contributed to this issue.
