somewhat of a misnomer, for the mate-rial is really a type of polyester plastic. It is sold as a fiber that comes in spoolsthat are fed into the 3D printing ma-chine.

Most of his PLA Corvairs are in 1/24thscale, but he made a much larger onefor his little daughter Tuesday, who isnow four and a hal f years old. It's aRampside ride-on toy with a seat, roll-ing wheels, and fully-operational steer-ing. Because it is relatively large,(about 1/8th scale), Wes had to built itup in sections and fasten them togetherwith screws and adhesives, but you'dhave to look twice to notice any seams.

JANUARY MEETINGNOTES

Our January meeting was attended byLarry Asheuer, Rich Greene, Wes He-iss, Keith Kohler, Al Lacki, LarryLewis, Scott Oberholzer, Fred Scher-zer, Dennis Stamm, Dick Weidner andBob Weideman.

Dick Weidner presented the minutesfrom our last meeting and the treasuryreport for the current period. The clubcurrently has $1,314.31 in its WellsFargo account. The minutes and reportwere approved as read.

Dick also mentioned that he receivedno nominations for the new year. Den-nis Stamm, Fred Scherzer and DickWeidner agreed to continue in theircurrent positions as President, VicePresident and Secretary/Treasurer.

Al Lacki inquired about the low-mileage 1964 Monza coupe that wasoffered for sale in Ronks, PA last au-tumn. Dick Weidner was the last per-son to keep tabs on it, and as far as hewas aware, it has not yet been sold be-cause the engine stalls out.

shapes in layers using a computerizedmodel of the object being produced.

You may be wondering exactly whereyou can obtain a “ computerized model”of a Corvair. Wes makes his own, butamazing though it may seem, there is asoftware company that will sell youone. The name of the company is“TurboSquid”. They offer several Cor-vair models including a 1964 Monzaconvertible, a 1969 Monza coupe, theMonza GT and SS show cars, and aCorvair Rampside. (Wes says hisRampside model has more detail thanthe Turbo Squid version and we believeit). Prices range from $99 to $199.

Prices for 3D printing machines havebeen dropping over the last severalyears and can now be purchased foraround $800 for hobby usage. Ofcourse, industrial-size units cost muchmore.

Wes has been using PLA - polylacticacid - as the feedstock material for hisCorvair models. In other words, themodels that he has been creating arespun out of PLA. The term "PLA" is

According to futurist ChristopherBarnatt, 3D printing -- also known asadditive manufacturing -- turns digital3D models into solid objects by build-ing them up in layers.

The technology was first invented inthe 1980s and since that time has beenused for rapid prototyping. However,in the last few years, 3D printing hasalso started to evolve into a next-generation manufacturing technologythat has the potential to allow local, on-demand production of final productsand parts.

According to Barnatt, "Already it ispossible to 3D print in a wide range ofmaterials that include thermoplastics, thermoplastic composites, pure metals, metal alloys, ceramics and variousforms of food."

LVCC member Wesley Heiss teaches3D printing at Lehigh University and, among other things, has created a num-ber of miniature Corvair models usingthe 3D technique. At our January meet-ing, he described the process as"basically a glue gun" that builds up

TUESDAY’S TOY IS A CORVAIR RAMPSIDE

Wes Heiss made this r ide-onCorvair Rampside for his littledaughter. Her name is Tues-day and she is four and a halfyears old. Some day, Weshopes to teach her to drive hisfull-size Rampside. But in themean t ime, this is a goodplace to start!

Here is the underside of Tues-day’s toy Corvair. The steer-ing actually works! The bodyof this creation is built up fromseveral pieces which arebonded together with screwsand adhesives. The whole as-sembly was too big to print inone whole piece.

Fred Scherzer smiles withamazement! The “cargo” inthe back of the Rampside isthe seat! No, Wes didn’t useany molds to make this neatlittle vehicle. It was “printed”instead.

Wes is big into FCs. In addi-tion to bringing these scalemodels, he drove his real full-size Rampside to our Januarymeeting!

Wes creates his own computermodels by photographing realobjects (such as Rampsidesand Greenbriers) and sendingthem to a software vendorwho does the conversions.

The level of detail availablethrough 3D printing is limitedonly by the level of accuracyprovided by the computerizedmodel that drives the printer.Grills, vent openings, escutch-eons and other trim are ren-dered as they should be. Onone of the models, the doorhandles stand-off from the ve-hicle’s body so that a minia-ture human could actuallywrap his little fingers aroundthe handle and push the but-ton!

TurboSquid is a digital mediacompany that sells stock 3Dmodels used in 3D graphics toa variety of industries, includ-ing computer games, architec-ture, and interactive training. As of 2014, TurboSquid hadover 370,000 3D models in itslibrary, including this 1967Corvair coupe.

than one of the same item to sell. Youcan, however, sell multiple items in a"lot." You could offer, say, one lot ofsix oil filters, instead of six individualoil filters.

Remember that only quality items selleasily. Greasy, rusty, bent and brokenpieces have limited appeal.

NJACE will deduct a 10% commissionon all sales. You may also donateitems for the full benefit of the club.

Did we mention that lunch is in-cluded at no charge? Now, whatabout that “Snow Date?” NJACE willinvoke the Snow Date only if theweather makes traveling diffi cult or ifaccumulat ed snow has rendered theAshley’s parking lot inaccessible.

Generally speaking, you can assumethat the event is “on,” but if it is neces-sary to postpone, NJACE will be mak-ing an announcement on the CorvairCenter Forum.

At the auction, shameless auc-tioneers offer Corvair parts and Cor-vair-related items to the highest bidder, with a 10% commission of the saleprice going to the club treasury. Youmay bring parts to sell, you may buy, oryou may do both, or you may just cometo enjoy the fun.

Larry Asheuer, Scott Oberholzer andDick Weidner attended the AllentownAgriplex swap meeting in January thatwas listed in our Local Events page lastmonth. Eagle-eye Larry purchased aNOS Corvair Spyder vacuum retardunit for a mere $10 and a pair of NOSjunior-size FC mirrors for $5 apiece -very rare items that usually commandmuch higher prices. Dick had a conver-sation at the Lehigh Valley Chevellesbooth. They will gladly install Corvairupholstery kits for anybody who is in-terested.

Rich Greene passed around several 9" x10" photos of Jeff Marvill's Spyder rac-ing against Rich's and Larry's souped-up Corvair at Maple Grove Dragway. The two cars ran in the 15 to 16 secondrange.

Dick Weidner passed around a hal f-dozen Corvair model kits of variousvintages, including several rare early-model Corvair kits molded by PalmerPlastics. A number of the kits are unas-sembled and therefore can commandbig money at model car swap meets. One of Dick's kits was originally of-fered to the public through Kellogg'scereals. Send in a box-top from yourRaisin Bran with fi fty cents and receivea nicely-detailed 1960 Corvair kit!(Such deals are not being offered to-day).

The star of this meeting was Wes Heiss, who displayed several Corvair modelshe created using a 3D graphic printer.Wes is Associate Professor of ProductDesign at Lehigh University and hasbeen teaching students about 3D print-ing for a few years. One of his Cor-vairs is a 1/8th scale ride-on toy for hisdaughter.

CORVAIR COOKING CORNER!Raisin Pie

Here’s another easy and very tastyrecipe from LVCC’s very own FirstLady, Mrs. Mary Ann Stamm!

1 cup seedless ra isins2 cups hot water1 egg1 cup sugar2 tablespoons cornstarchPinch of salt1/4 teaspoon nutmeg1 lemon for juice and rind1 tablespoon butter

Soak the rais ins in a medium saucepan in the hot water for an hour or more until they are soft andplump. Whisk the rest of the ingredients together and stir into the raisins. Cook over moderately lowheat until the filling thickens. Pour the filling into a well-chilled pie crust and sprinkle the top with basicpie crumbs. Bake in lower third of oven pre-heated to 375 degrees for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to350 degrees and continue baking 20 minutes more.

Basic Pie Crumbs:

3/4 cup flour3 tablespoons butter at room temperature1/4 cup brown sugar1/4 cup sugar

Cut the ingredients together with a pastry blender or rub the mixture through with your fingers until afine crumb results. Sprinkle over the top of the pie filling before baking.

When was the last time you saw a Kissel? This one is on display at the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia.

the clip, I can only assume that it wasnever reinstalled at rebuild time.

I recall in Finch's "How to Keep YourCorvair Alive" that he mentioned theonly trouble he ever had with a PG wasa "broken clip." Maybe this was thedreaded "e" clip?

A local Corvair owner I was talking tolast week had a similar story: a poorlyshifting unit that he decided to rebuild.Hal fway through, he found the samethrottle valve clip broken. I wonderhow many PGs have been replaced orrebuilt for the same reason?

Broken or missing e-clips are one ofseveral potential causes of erratic shift-ing. Worn governors can cause similarproblems.

Doyou prefer something newer, like a1950 Allard J2, 1963 Chevrolet Cor-vette Grand Sport, or a 1964 ShelbyCobra Daytona Coupe? These andmany more are here on display. (Sorry,no Corvairs!)

The Simeone Foundation AutomotiveMuseum is located at 6825 NorwitchDrive, Philadelphia, PA 19153. Hoursof operation are Tuesday through Fri-day 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturdaythrough Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM, allyear long. The price of admission is$12 per person, ($10 per person forSeniors 65+)

AUTOMATIC TRANSMIS-SION SHIFT PROBLEMS,by Bob Kirkman

Editor's Note: This article appeared inthe August 1986 CORSA Communique.

Member Tom Hession had a frustratingproblem with his Powerglide automatic. The car would downshift abruptly fromdrive to low above 50 mph as soon asthe gas pedal was released. Then itwould hang in low until the power traincooled. Several of us gave advice thatwas of no help. Tom's own resolutionshould be interesting to some of ourmembership.

With the transmission still in theGreenbrier, I removed the valve body, planning on swapping it with anotherunit. Once removed, I decided to take acloser look at the original to check forfree movement of the various valves intheir respective bores. All movedfreely. What I finally noticed, how-ever, was that the "e" clip that is sup-posed to be on the throttle valve wasmissing. I went to the hardware storefor one that fit. I then cleaned all partsand re-installed the unit. Success! Itnow shifts perfectly. All this troubleover a five-cent part.

During this time I heard of two or threeother Powerglides with shifting prob-lems. All had a broken clip. My unitwas purchased from someone whoclaimed it was professionally rebuilt. As I never found any trace in the pan of
