The Vision Newsletter of First Baptist Church April 30, 2018 I learned a couple of things about Sr. adults the other day. I went to the Heritage Living Center to see Aline Starry. When I knocked on her door, a care giver came to the door and said she was getting a shower. So I opted to sit down in the hallway and wait for her to get through. While waiting I watched several seniors in the big room playing bingo. The first thing I learned is that seniors can be fussy with each other. Seriously. While playing bingo one lady was fussing at the lady sitting at her table and telling her she needed to turn her hearing aid up because she was tired of having to repeat every bingo call to her. At another table a lady was fussing at the gal across from her for picking her nose. Really. She even tattled on her to the lady calling the bingo numbers. It was a bit humorous. The lady truly was digging pretty deep for gold. The other thing I learned and kinda already knew, happened when the caregiver came out pushing Aline in her wheelchair. Aline looked over and saw me and was so perky, looked great, very talkative, and had a big smile on her face. I thought wow, she is really glad to see me. While visiting and reeling over the fact that I thought she was really glad to see me, I found out that she was on her way to the living centers beauty shop. Consequently, I don’t think it was me that contributed to all her joy. Her jovialness was her appointment at the beauty shop. Learn this men, you are second fiddle to a beauty shop appointment. You should never get in the way of a woman on her way to the beauty shop. The reason I said I kinda already new this is because there have been occasions when I told my mom I (her long lost son) was coming by Ada and would stop by and see her. There have been a few times I could tell my mom was a little nervous and even probed for what time I would be there. Reason being, she was concerned about how that might interfere with her “beauty shop” appointment. Never get in the way of a woman on her way to the beauty shop. By the way, it is Senior Adult Recognition Sunday May 6th. I love my senior adults. Wait, I think I am one. Blessings, Brother Gary

The Vision Newsletter of

First Baptist Church

April 30, 2018

I learned a couple of things about Sr. adults the other day.

Blessings,

Brother Gary

Splinters stink. One little tiny piece of wood that you can barely see

and it feels like a whole stick is in your hand. My middle child was

playing outside on our swing set and got one right in the middle of

his hand a few months ago. He slid his hand down the beam and got a

nice one right in his palm. Obviously, there was lots of panicking,

hollering and tears as he ran up to me.

Now, I’m no nurse or doctor, but I realized this one was a doozy

and was going to require both tweezers AND finger nail clippers

(yeah, it was bad). I also knew that this kid was going to have to trust

me, not be afraid of a little blood, and deal with the pain that was to

come. I was pretty sure all 3 things were going to be a problem.

And… I was right. Screaming, crying, begging me NOT to touch it,

not to clip on his skin… all of it. It was like I was cutting his arm off!

Kari came back to see what was going on. And, for what it’s worth,

was glad SHE wasn’t doing it. We had to figure something out.

Then it hit me. I told him to look at his Mom and not the splinter so

I could go to work without him seeing what I was doing. She was

assuring him, calming him and telling him I was almost done and not

to worry. While there were still tears, he calmed down and he

followed her words. That sucker took a while to come out, but we got

it out (big time Dad points!) and then we had a fantastic story of this

“war wound” as only a five year old could tell it.

We are just like this when it comes to pain, aren’t we? Most of the

time it hits when you’re just playing or doing your normal routine.

But, when it comes, you have to deal with it. Some of us scream and

holler and don’t want anyone touching our “wounds”. Some of us

will feel like our world is crumbling due to the pain. When does it

change? Much like when my son looked to his Momma’s face for

support, we need to fix our eyes on Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:2). Oh,

the wound or pain may still be there, but our focus has to be on

Christ, not the pain. Now maybe the “splinter” we face will get

removed or maybe it ends up staying in us, but the crying and hurt is

lessened because we hope in Christ instead of complaining about the

hurt from the pain.

What are you focusing on today? Your pain and hurt or on Jesus

Christ? Just a reminder is found in this song lyric: “Turn your eyes

upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth

will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”

See You Sunday,

Lyndall

Join us at the Creek!

Falls Creek – June 18th-23rd – $190/student

Falls Creek is a great opportunity for those who have completed

7th – 12th grade to experience God without the distractions of

everyday life. With several options of fun activities, competitions,

recreation, breakout sessions and services, there are plenty of

reasons for you to attend!

The theme this year is FINISH based on Philippians 1:6 which

speaks on God finishing the work that He has started in you

through Christ. Please join us this summer to see what God will

do in your life.

If you’re interested in attending the summer Mission Trip, we

have a few spots remaining and would love to get you connected.

We will be teaming up with World Changers to meet the needs of

people in Oxford, Alabama. Students must have completed 7th

grade. Cost is $280. Sign up with Tim.

PARENTS – we know that the cost for camps can really add up

for a family. There is a discount for each additional sibling. We

would like all students who wish to go to camp to attend camp. A

full or partial scholarship may be available. Please contact Bro.

Randy for details.
