First Grade Gift Bibles: Sunday, October 14th
On Sunday, Oct. 14th, we will celebrate our first graders as they grow in their ability to read and understand God’s word for themselves. They will receive a gift Bible in the worship service that they can bring with them to Club 145 on Sundays to learn how to find verses, read and apply the stories they find there!
Halloween Open House
Wednesday, October 31st • 6-8 pm • Corner House
Come by the Corner House on Halloween night between 6-8 pm for trick-or-treating, face-painting and popcorn! The PCC youth will be hosting an Open House to welcome our neighbors as well as our PCC kids. (Note: instead of Trunk-or-Treat, this year we will help fill the post-Christmas lull by inviting our neighbors to a Winterfest carnival on Sat., Jan. 26th. Begin thinking/dreaming of game, food, or activity booths you or your small group would like to host!).

October Sunday School Themes
This year, all our PCC Kids’ Classes will be studying Old Testament narratives. Our goal is for kids to see the big picture of how God is at work in the world, and how they, too, are part of God’s Great Story. Along the way, we will pause to notice and celebrate what God has and is doing through feasts & festivals, including a Harvest Festival on Nov. 25th. In October we will learn about and celebrate God’s amazing creation. Ways families can follow up at home:
Things to talk about:
• What things did God create? Name as many as you can • What creation is your favorite? Why? • Pray together, thanking God for His creation. You might pray “alphabetically”—thanking Him for something beginning with “A” the first night, “B” the second, etc.
Things to do:
• Plant seeds & let kids watch them grow. Try some without soil (plant in rocks), water, or sun to show why its important that God created all three things • Take kids on a nature walk and notice God’s creation. Collect dry leaves, feathers, etc. to make a collage. • Brainstorm ways your family can help conserve and protect God’s creation. Choose one to begin with. Continued on page 2

Companions in Christ

Life Together

WELCOME NEWCOMERS! If you started coming to our church within the past year and would like to have the opportunity to meet others from our congregation and staff, and to ask questions about our faith community in an informal setting, please join us for our Monthly Newcomers Lunch. The next luncheon will be on Sunday, October 14th from 12:15 - 1:30 p.m. at the Corner House (on the Northwest corner of Santa Barbara and Lake Avenue). All family members are welcome! In order to plan for the food, your RSVP is greatly appreciated to Marianne Hill at [email protected] or 626-798-2097.
Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions, and also let us know if you will be bringing preschoolers so that we can plan food and activities for them.
Club 145 (1st-5th graders) compiled lunch bags with water, granola bars, and other food staples to provide to those who come by the church looking for assistance.

Tuesday, October 16th, Sarah Circle meets from
9:30 am - noon in Fireside. We welcome all

Urban Family Center, will share about the Can
Do Kids Club, the new program she runs at
Pasadena Covenant.

The 2012 Bad Weather Shelter Ministry (BWS) begins Nov. 25th
When the Bad Weather Shelter (BWS) is activated, Pasadena Covenant’s gym transforms from a basketball court to a shelter for those who need a safe place to stay at night. We need the help of many to care for those who come and stay the night in our gym building.
The BWS is weather activated from November 25th through December 31st and again from March 1st through March 15th.
Pasadena Covenant helps man the Wednesday evening times (a total of seven Wednesdays) when the BWS is activated.
[Note: Weather activated means the night temperature will drop below 40°, or rain is expected that night]
From Jan. 1st - Feb. 28th, the BWS will be open every night and Pasadena Covenant helps man the nine (9) Wednesday evenings during those months.
There are several ways you can help with the BWS:
As an individual, available to serve on a Wednesday (or several Wednesdays) when the BSW is weather activated. You will be place on an “on call” list for the days you are available to help.
As part of a group manning the BWS on one of the 9 Wednesday evenings in January or February. A group (12 to 15 people) will work from 6:15 to 9:00 p.m. (come earlier if you are cooking in the kitchen). The group will plan and provide a meal, side, drinks, and dessert, help set up the gym and wash the dishes after the meal (handouts will include suggestions for meals and instructions and information explaining what is included in “manning” the BWS).
Providing frozen lasagnas, which will be stored for use on the Wednesday nights the shelter is weather activated, or donate money to help cover the cost of buying food for weather activated Wednesday nights.
Donating clean socks (tube socks work well) for the guests who need them.

For groups (12 – 15 people) to help on a Wednesday in January or February, signups begin in late October.
To sign up to help, or for more information, someone from the Peace and Justice committee will be in the Courtyard/gym at hospitality time in October (for individuals to sign up) and November (for groups to sign up). Elizabeth English was a member of Pasadena Covenant Church while she worked with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) in this area. She moved in 2009 to become the Missouri Area Director for IVCF and worked for 3 years with IVCF staff and students in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. Last Spring Elizabeth partnered for two weeks with the Nigerian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (NIFES), which is the largest movement in the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES), the umbrella organization of which both NIFES and IVCF are members. There she was able to train NIFES staff and student leaders to train others to lead inductive Bible studies on campuses throughout Nigeria. Currently, her new role is working with a team on the upcoming Urbana Student Mission Conference that will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, this December 27-31. (Urbana is the mission conference for North American students hosted by InterVaristy Christian Fellowship). Elizabeth works in a primarily administrative role with various elements of the afternoon program, including seminars, tracks, and lounges. She is also spending a lot of time in Luke’s Gospel, the foundation for this Urbana, as she will once again be teaching at Urbana as well.

For the opportunity to work with the Urbana team until next February
For healing after a car accident, and fewer migraines

For good collaboration on the Urbana team, and for God to shape the conference to lead students into his mission field.
For direction after Urbana.
For continued healing and maybe even an end to migraines?!
Tim Clark, a long time member of Pasadena Covenant Church, his wife, Wakako, and two sons, Makoto and Hiroki, will be worshiping with us on Sunday, October 28th. They serve the Lord in Japan with Asian Access, a mission now in strategic partnership with SIM. They are working with Alpha Japan to establish Relationship Central Japan. Relationship Central includes The Marriage Course, The Parenting Children Course, and The Parenting Teenagers Course.

Weekly Programs Oikas: Sunday Mornings, 9 am-10:15 am
“Oikas” is the Greek work for “House”. When we come together on Sunday Mornings, we come together just as we are, in the House of God. Sunday Mornings are a place where we can be totally authentic with one another and dig deep into God’s Word together. .
Selah: Wednesday Night Worship and Small Groups, 6:30-8:30 pm
Selah is our midweek program for both high school and middle school students. “Selah” is a Hebrew word that is used many times throughout the book of Psalms. We’re not exactly sure of the meaning, but some good guesses include “Pause” or “Stop and listen”. Wednesday nights at PCSM are made to be just that: a time out in our busy week to rest and listen to God. We do this through spending quality time together, worshiping through song, and connecting in age and gender specific small groups.

Last year’s fundraiser carwash was a HUGE success, so we are going to do it again this year! Bring your sponges and towels and come support members of our group who are going to CSM LA! This is an All-Youth Event.
Halloween Open House: Wednesday, Oct. 31 • 5:45-8 pm • Corner House
In place of our usual Selah Wednesday Night Meeting, we will be hanging out in the Corner House for some safe Halloween fun by welcoming neighborhood Trick-or-Treaters with candy, enjoying some popcorn and treats, and having a costume contest.
