November 2016 Principal’s Corner This past week has been complicated for many of us. After the elections, many students showed up at school worried, scared, anxious, confused and looking for answers from their teachers. Although many of us as adults also have questions, our number one priority is our students. We have provided students opportunities to talk about their thoughts and concerns in order to create a safe space for them at school. Our vision at Riverview is to create an environment where all students feel challenged academically, feel cared for and where they feel empowered in their ethnic identity. Our mission is to empower students to become fearless leaders in their own communities and this is an opportunity for them to learn about their own ability to speak up for what they believe, regardless of what those beliefs are. Please call the school at 651-293-8665 if you have any questions or concerns. We will also continue to focus on providing students with great learning experiences. Pictured above, the group Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc performed traditional Aztec dances and shared about The Day of the Dead, a traditional celebration in many Latin American countries. Last week, students had the opportunity to vote and learn about the election process. They also participated in an assembly with a giant inflatable Earth to talk about the Earth's orbit. And finally, all students attended an assembly by CLIMB Theatre to discuss how to handle bullying. We will continue to focus on providing authentic learning experiences for students, while also acknowledging that they may have a lot on their mind. CONFERENCES Thurs, Nov. 17 & Fri, Nov. 18 We hope to have 100% participation next week at Parent/Teacher Conferences! If you do not yet have a time slot, please call Tracy in the main office at 651-744-5961. This is an important opportunity to talk with your student’s teacher about his/her individual progress. **Remember: No PreK on Nov. 17 No school, all grades, Nov. 18 FUNDRAISER PICK-UP – Nov. 17 If you purchased any items through the fundraiser, pick them up on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the evening. Bullying Awareness Month What is Bullying? Bullying is being mean to another person over and over again. Bullying often includes:

• Teasing • Talking about hurting someone • Spreading rumors • Leaving kids out on purpose • Attacking someone by hitting them or yelling at them

What can kids do?

• Treat everyone with respect – think about what you say and do. How will it affect others?

• Talk to an adult – if you feel like being mean or you feel like you’re being bullied. Adults will help you find a solution.

• Protect your passwords and let parents be part of your online activities. • If you are being bullied or see bullying, calmly ask the person to stop. If

they don’t stop, walk away and/or tell an adult. • Get involved – what else can you do to prevent or stop bullying?

What can families do?

• Help them understand what bullying is. • Give them strategies – humor, saying “stop,” walking away • Communication is key – students need to know they can always talk to

you or another adult • Model how to treat others with respect and kindness
