Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, a man whose life and example has given us a value system which remains the greatest force for good in our community. Christmas is also a time for families to get together, to visit old friends, to think of the good times and the good fortune life has given to us. However, in properly celebrating Christmas and enjoying our good fortune we should spare a moment in thought for the lonely in our community, ones without family and friends, for whom Christmas can be particularly a hard time. Love, joy and peace are the regular themes of Christmas. We know that these can be expressed only through relationships. God loves the company of those who are in need, and that is why he comes during Christmas to stand with them, to live with them and to die and rise for them. It is important that the celebrations should extend to our differences and the challenges that accompany the understanding and desire to live in harmony with our fellow man. It is the dedicated work and sacrifice of many members for years, that has made AMMA reach this recognition. Many people have sacrificed their valuable time, money, health etc. for the growth of the Association. Many things have gone unnoticed or not acknowledged by other community members and has never been mentioned in the history of the association. Every committee and well -wishers of AMMA have done their best for the community within their limited resources. The committee has always tried to nurture the need of AMMA’s members. They made many opportuni- ties available to families especially in helping our children understand and practice our culture. ONAM 2008

Onam, the harvest festival of Malayalees across the globe, were organized by Adelaide Metropolitan Malayalee Association (AMMA) on Saturday, September 20th, 2008 at the Fogolar Furlan Inc auditorium. This year’s event was attended by around 800 people, as an indication of growing malayalee community presence around Adelaide. Classical, semi-classical and cinematic dances and music, comedy programs by talented members were a treat to the hearts and minds of the participants. Onam function was given its fitting end by sumptuous Onasadya prepared by volunteers. Pookalam is laid out in the entrance with much celebration and cheer all around.

A big Thank you for all volunteers who supported in areas such as Pookkalam, welcoming members and guests, at the front desk, cooking and serving food, stage and program co-coordinators, technical support, participants and especially those who trained the small children. AMMA organised a potluck dinner to congratulate all participants and those who worked behind the scenes. We all had a fantastic time together to share our memorable moments and experience. AMMA received a lot of feedback and definitely it is very useful for us to improve upcoming events.

“ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD” !!!!!!

Choosing a lender for your home loan can be very confusing. The products from lender to lender may have subtle differences. Which product shall I choose? Do I go for the lowest interest rate? Do I follow like sheep and fix the loan? Do I look only at the rate and hang the rest? The rate is not the be all and end all of a loan. There may be hidden charges and con-ditions that are detrimental to your future plans. Also, the borrowing capacity can vary from bank to bank. It is even more confusing when one goes on the internet or to a broker and source a loan that offers you more bor-rowing power than the well established institutions. Caution is advised, as what seems to be a good deal may turn out to be not what you expected. The factors that need to be consid-ered are what fees and charges apply. Are these operators or brokers interstate or conduct-ing their business from a P O Box. During the term of the loan who do you contact for any queries you may have. Also, in these financial upheaval times some of these lenders have recently gone into liquidation leaving the borrowers at the mercy of the Receivers. Another factor to consider is some of these lenders have raised their home loan rates well above the established institu-tions. In fact some have gone so far as to raise the rates just before the Reserve Bank de-clares a rate reduction and you find yourself in the same situation as before. The prudent thing to do is to seek professional advice from reputable individuals and firms. I am aware some in our community may question why they can get more money from other sources and yet APRFS have given them a certain loan.

Remember what our parents and school teachers taught us…… “ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD!!”

AMMA organised an incredibly successful sporting season for all AMMA members. The number of partici-pants in sports and games, community participation, and competitiveness have been exceeded our expecta-tions. Apart form a number of events on Family Fun Day, we conducted special competitions for Cricket, Shuttle badminton, Volleyball, Cards, Chess, and Painting. Red group clinched the overall championship by withstanding a tight competition from other groups. We are very thankful for the effort and leadership shown by the Team leaders to organise and motivate the partici-pants. This year, sports committee selected Ajay KM as Sports Man of the Year and Greeshma Girish as Sports Women of the Year. Lathish Namath and family selected as the Best Sports Supporting Family of the Year for their involvement and contribution to the overall success of the sports activities. V . ANAND WORLD CHESS CHAMPION

Chess, which is supposed to have originated in In-dia, finally has an undisputed home-grown cham-pion, whose F-1 style rapid-speed brilliant mind has him at the top of the game. A unique moment for Anand. A glorious moment for India. In 2007 he won the World Chess Championship for the first time and successfully defended this year to become a true undisputed champion of a game that is played in literally every corner of the world. Anand is one of four players in history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE rating list. He was on the top of the world rating list five out of six times from April 2007 to July 2008. In 2007 he was awarded the second highest civilian award of India, the Padma Vibhushan. He is also the first recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991-92, India's highest sporting honour.
