LATEST ACADEMIC NEWS Congratulations to our 11+ candidates in Year 6 who received their assessments this week. We are also publishing the SATs data from 2018 which makes for impressive reading. Statistics on their own never tell the human story of effort and perseverance; suffice to say we are very proud of the aspirations and achievements of all the children, each one unique and gifted in their own way.

U11/10 GIRLS HOCKEY v St Ronans Match Report by Georgia (Y6) On Wednesday 10th October, Sacred Heart Y6 girls, played St Ronans B Team. The game started with some good passing from Eliza, Elena and Avaani. With an excellent short corner Sophie scored a goal. In the second half St Ronans played well and, despite some great defending from

Mia, Ava and Georgia, St Ronans managed to score. Fantastic interception from Amelia and Alana helped Sophie to score a second goal. The score was 2-1 to Sacred Heart. Well done to Alana who was awarded Player of the Match! Match Report by Amelie (Y5) On Wednesday 10th October, Sacred Heart Y5 Hockey Team played a match against St Ronan’s away. The sun was shining and after an energetic warm up, not a hair was out of place and the Y5 Hockey Team were ready! The team has clearly been working hard and showed great improvement from the start. Possession was evenly shared throughout the first half, as a variety of Sacred Heart goalies took turns to defend our goal from a succession of short corners. Sacred Heart showed great skill and determination to frustrate their opposition and Amelie managed to score a goal with great support from the other attacking players. Unfortunately, after a spirited first half, we were unlucky. Despite a marvellous team effort and great defending from Olivia, Beatrice and Florence, we conceded a couple of breakaway goals. Even with the support from our travelling parents and a huge effort from the whole squad, the final score was 5-1. Well done to everyone and an extra well done to Izzy who was chosen by the opposition as Player of the Match. We would like to thank Mrs Overy for coaching us, St Ronan’s for a great game and match tea and the fantastic parents for their support. Well done again everyone and we look forward to our next match!

U11/10 BOYS FOOTBALL v Battle Abbey Report by Oliver (Y5) On Wednesday 10th October Sacred Heart played a football match against Battle Abbey School. We played strongly throughout the match. Our passing and our strong defence were too much for the opposition resulting in some amazing goals by Jack, Oliver, Monty Z and Charlie A. Well done to all

the boys who played.

ROTARY SHOEBOX APPEAL Every year we take part in the Rotary Shoebox Appeal. Items are donated; either household, toys or items for teenagers and placed in a shoebox. Shoeboxes are collected by the local Rotary and sent to Eastern Europe as a special gift for people living in poverty. For further information please see www.rotaryshoebox.org We have a number of flat pack shoeboxes from the Rotary that you can collect from the school office. Please return your filled shoeboxes to school by FRIDAY 2nd NOVEMBER.

SCHOOL UNIFORM A reminder that all pupils should return to school after the half term in full Winter Uniform. (Nursery uniform remains the same). A Winter Uniform list for both girls and boys can be found on the school's website. http://www.sacredheartwadhurst.org.uk/parents/uniform. So we would suggest, if you haven't already, please get your little ones to quickly try on any previous winter uniform to check it still fits before the Autumn term finishes on Tuesday 16 October. As usual, uniform can be purchased online and collected from the school office during term time. Or can be purchased by cash or card at the school uniform shop. We are now starting to build up our second hand stock and do have a small selection of second hand winter uniform available to purchase. The school uniform shop will be open as usual Monday 15 October but opening at the slightly earlier time of 8.30am for your convenience. Please also ensure any new uniform is clearly named before your child returns to school. Have a lovely half term break and we look forward to seeing all the children in their lovely, warmer winter uniform on the 29th October!

REMEMBRANCE DAY PARADE We hope to have your support for the Wadhurst Parade on Sunday 11th November. Do let us know if

you will be in attendance. Children should wear school uniform and assemble at Gloucester Road at 9.50am. We will be carrying the school banner and laying a wreath at the War Memorial at 10.15am.

Another busy and exciting week at Sacred Heart School

where learning is fun!

A few excerpts from a wonderful week…. Foundation Stage was very fortunate to have lots of grandparents come to visit. Some read stories that made us laugh, while others made us wonder what we would do. We were lucky enough to have a grandparent who once belonged to the circus! We learnt how to pose in front of lions. A huge big round of applause from us all. Thank you Year 1 Year One felt a whole lot more fortunate to be alive today rather than about 50 years ago as they found out from Mrs Hird and Mrs Jenkins that school life then was rather more strict. The Dunce's hat, canes and rulers are no longer used as punishment. PE and Art are much more enjoyable although some sense of nostalgia was tangible when Scottish dancing, singing lessons and warm milk were discussed with the children. Fifteen pairs of little ears and eyes were totally engrossed in the image of school life presented to them. As a special treat, Mrs Trask, who helps out to hear the Year One children read, shared with the children a beautiful polar book which they very much enjoyed rereading themselves in the afternoon. Year 2 were delighted to welcome Mrs Pulman, Winnie's grandmother, who came to read us her favourite Beatrix Potter story, The Tale of Tom Kitten. We were also inspired by a visit from Harry's grandfather, Mr Southern, who talked to us about the importance of having a dream. He regaled us with stories about his childhood dream of one day seeing mountains. This dream was inspired by a book on mountains that his choir master had given him as a young boy. Mr Southern's dream was fulfilled when he and his wife spent three weeks trekking across the Himalayas. He instilled in the children the belief that you are never too young to have a dream! Year 4 were thrilled to hear their Grandparent talk from Mr Ken Southern who proved that he had a Growth Mindset to us all! You are never too young or old to aim high and climb your own personal mountain. A huge thank you to Mr Southern for such an inspiring talk.

As Thursday was National Poetry Day, Year 6 were treated to hearing some wonderful poems from Ava's Granny, Mrs Sherwin. She talked about playing in the garden of a deserted house when she was just a little girl and we heard about tree climbing and being called back for tea with a gong!

Year 6's class assembly reminded us to ‘Brighten Up’ for Harvest and that we should remember those who are less fortunate than we are around the world. They had a cake sale to raise money for this year's CAFOD appeal - a fabulous £127.24. "Doing the Assembly made me feel lucky because we have a school that helps the poor and hungry." "It made me feel fortunate to have food, water and shelter."

Thank you for your donations of food and funds to brighten up the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves at home and overseas. Food has been shared between the Tunbridge Wells Nourish Food Bank and the Seahaven Food Bank on the south coast. Funds raised from the magnificent Y6 cake sale, staff ‘Hunger Lunch’, Harvest Assembly donations and Milo’s Trading cards initiative totalled £252.24
